TAPPI’s popular and practical Linerboard Medium and Corrugated Box Manufacture course takes place April 9-10, 2012, at the Holiday Inn in Neenah, Wisconsin.
This course will help strengthen attendees’ understanding of the corrugating process, and linerboard and medium performance properties and manufacture. The course content is intended to help improve overall corrugating box performance and runnability. It is ideal for both corrugators and pulp and paper mill employees. The level of the two day course is introductory to intermediate.
Topics Include:
- The Corrugated session (1/2 day) will cover how to achieve the strongest bond and highest quality combined board. Topics include (1) the equipment, (2) starch, (3) corrugated process technology, and (4) importance of linerboard & medium properties and runnability.
- The Properties & Testing of Liner & Medium session (1/2 day) covers the tests, what they mean, and how the properties of the board affect the tests.
- The P&P Mill Operations session (1 day) will cover the technology of the pulp and papermaking processes, and how they affect the quality, properties, tests, and runnability of the liner & medium.
COURSE FACULTY
Michael J. Kocurek, Professor Emeritus, of Paper Science & Engineering at North Carolina State University, is one of the world’s most recognized educators in the pulp and paper industry. His focus is on Pulp & Paper Technology, Paper Properties, and Workforce and Professional Development. He has taught in-mill company classroom short courses on Linerboard & Medium Manufacture to groups of operators at over 20 mill locations. Mike has also taught university courses on Paper and Board Properties for 19 years. He is the editor of 11 books, including the recognized Pulp and Paper Manufacture series covering the entire field of pulp & paper. He has authored/co-authored 25 video publications, including the Introduction to Pulp & Paper series- again covering the entire field of pulp & paper. He is active in teaching distance learning courses.
Dr. Kocurek received his B.S., M.S., and PhD degrees in Paper Science & Engineering from the SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry, and Syracuse University.
For the April 2012 course, Dr. Kocurek will be joined by Jon Porter, Senior Trainer/ Process Specialist for Fosber America as a co-instructor. Porter, has 30 years of Technical Training experience, designing, building, and delivering technical training in several different media formats for stand-up, group-lock step, and self-paced programs with an emphasis on adult learning.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
After successfully completing this course, you should be able to:
- Explain how Linerboard and Medium Properties and tests relate to the final box performance.
- Identify and describe what happens in the Corrugator, and some variables that affect the final product.
- Increase recognition of, on a mill wide basis, the effects of fiber raw materials, pulp mill and recycling processes, stock preparation, chemical additives, headbox and wet end operations, pressing and drying, calendering and size press operations on performance tests and properties.
