Publication Policy
TAPPI PRESS Publication Process and Policies
Interested in Submitting a Manuscript or Updating an Existing TAPPI Publication?
TAPPI PRESS is an industry leader in publishing original books, reports, conference proceedings and web-based training products that help members, students, and other industry professionals in pulp, paper and converting areas improve their knowledge base and identify technical solutions.
TAPPI PRESS encourages authors and subject matter experts to provide their knowledge and expertise through publications that educate and train professionals throughout the industry.
The following outlines the criteria and polices for acceptance of manuscript submissions. This policy is designed to promote the scientific and technical accuracy of PRESS publications and ensure that fair credit is given to the authors, committees and to other individuals who have contributed to the publication.
How to Submit Your Proposal – 3 EASY Steps
Step 1: To submit a book proposal to us, simply complete our Manuscript Submission Form. Your answers to this questionnaire are crucial in helping us evaluate the content of your manuscript.
Step 2: Manuscripts are reviewed by a combination of member groups (Divisions, Committees), outside evaluators and subject matter experts. Manuscripts must be approved by a member group within TAPPI or at least two of our technical reviewers. Authors are encouraged to recommend outside reviewers but the final selection will be at the discretion of TAPPI PRESS. In addition, all manuscripts must adhere to TAPPI’s Antitrust Policy.
Step 3: The final decision to publish will be based on several criteria based on information provided by the author, target audience, fit within TAPPI portfolio, demand for the publications content area, and comparisons with similar proposals received.
Manuscript Guidelines
All manuscripts must be submitted in their entirety in Microsoft Word format. All images, figures, or other graphics should be submitted as high quality jpg or tiff files. A scheduled date for completion of your complete and final manuscript (including all ancillary materials: illustrative matter, permissions, etc.) will be specified in your contract. Failure to meet this deadline may result in the removal of the book from our production timetable. This will delay, and may even prevent, its eventual publication. Additional manuscript guidelines and requirements will be provided to potential authors by TAPPI PRESS.
The Contract
TAPPI PRESS will offer a contract upon approval of the project. All authors including co-authors, contributing authors and participating members of committee credited in the final manuscripts, MUST sign the publication agreement prior to production.
TAPPI will hold copyright ownership of published manuscripts along with the exclusive right to publish and sell the work in all formats, under its own name and under other imprints or trade names, during the full term of copyright and all renewals thereof, and to register the copyright in TAPPI’s name in all countries and in all languages.
By submitting the manuscript the author(s) confirm he/she (they) are the sole owner of the work and has (have) full power and authority to copyright it and to enter into an agreement with TAPPI; that the work does not infringe on any copyright, violate any property rights, or contain any scandalous, libelous, or unlawful matter.
Division and Committee Projects
TAPPI’s Divisions and Committees actively work on volunteer projects which bring together members who want to advance the development and dissemination of information to the industry. The collective expertise and wide range of experience and backgrounds helps TAPPI PRESS publish content that benefits the industry we serve. All submissions, including individual author submissions, are subject to review by the appropriate TAPPI member groups. All authors involved in committee or division projects must sign the TAPPI PRESS publication agreement to be included in the publishing process.
Author Compensation
TAPPI may pay a standard royalty as a percentage of actual receipts from sales of books, subsidiary rights, and licenses. All royalty payments are negotiated on a case by case basis; the general royalty amount is approximately 10%. Royalty compensation for publications with multiple authors will be shared and distributed among all authors listed in the publication agreement. Compensation for published products by individual authors (non-committee) projects are eligible for royalty compensation. Publications developed and produced as division/committee projects do not receive royalty compensation; however, committees can contribute a portion of sales to the scholarship fund in TAPPI’s Foundation.
