The rate of ink absorption into paper is important in determining print-quality characteristics in ink-jet printing based on aqueous ink. The absorption rate depends on the ink composition as well as chemistry of the paper surface. In this study, the effect of different levels of internal sizing on wetting dynamics of the paper was investigated. To relate wettability to ink-jet print performance, tests were performed with liquids of various water/humectant compositions and ink-jet printer ink. A comparison was made of the ink penetration test performance with that in other wetting tests, including Bristow dynamic absorbance and contact angle. These results were then related to print quality.
