The paper industry has witnessed an increase in the incidence of press vibration and roll-bounce problems over the past several years. This rise in vibration problems has paralleled the trends of increased machine speeds, increased press loadings, and roll hardness. Vibration analysis has been utilized over the last fifteen years as a troubleshooting and preventative maintenance tool to reduce the damage and downtime associated with vibration. New vibration analysis techniques such as Synchronous Time Averaging have simplified the analysis procedures and made the results clearer and easier to understand than previous techniques. We review in this paper some vibration fundamentals, the improved methods of analyzing vibration, and present two case histories as examples.
