Curtis W. Bryant, Joe W. Kloeker, Joe Hege, Mark Meech, Kent Nilsson--The Plymouth wastewater treatment system has accumulated an inventory of 2.17 million cubic yards of secondary sludge over the past 34 years of operation. Continued accumulation was projected to pose increased risk of NPDES noncompliance by April 2001. The selected method of managing the inventory was to dredge, mechanically dewater, and use on-site disposal in a new, lined landfill. Key criteria for the dewatering process were based on a combined evaluation of the dewatering and landfill alternatives. Disposal of 40% sludge cake in a minimum footprint landfill was the selected combination. Sludge inventory measurements and modeling projections provided sufficient time for evaluations of alternatives, coordination with landfill development, and full scale implementation.
