Classical tensile tests on wet papers and rheology measurements on immersed thick papers have been performed. The Young’s modulus EP wetand the out-of-plane shear modulus GP wet of the wet papers are calculated, and from the latter we deduce the out-of-plane shear modulus of the wet fibres. A model for paper deformation during in-plane tension is derived, that takes into account the out-of-plane shearing of fibres. The predictions of the model are compared to our results, and the model’s validity is discussed.
