Easy-To-Understand Introduction to Bearing Isolators
Manufacturer: Inpro/Seal Co.
Description: David C. Orlowski, a well-known authority on bearing protection and the inventor of the bearing isolator, has published literature entitled "Introduction to Bearing Isolators: A Short Lesson in Bearing Isolation".
Inventor of the bearing isolator and CEO of Inpro/Seal Company, Rock Island, Illinois, USA, Orlowski has spent over 40 years working on ways to enhance and extend the service life of rotating equipment. Along the way, he conceived the bearing isolator (patent # 4,022,479) and over 40 other related patents.
Details: The literature will prove of value to anyone involved in the management, maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) of motors, machine tool spindles, turbines, fans, gear boxes, paper machine rolls, pumps and other types of rotating equipment used in industrial/process plants.
According to Orlowski, "We conducted extensive research into the use of bearing isolators. The results of this market-by-market, application-by-application analysis, showed that people wanted to know more about bearing isolators. Whether they used bearing isolators or not, whether or not they read our literature or advertising messages, the majority of the respondents stated that they wanted to know more about the basics of the product."
Orlowski concluded by saying that, "This literature is a direct result. of our research and has become part of a major investment by Inpro/Seal Company to inform end users how bearing isolators eliminate the root cause of rotating and related equipment failure-moisture, dirt and abrasives contaminating the bearing environment."
Important Information:
What makes this reference unique is that it is written by the inventor of the product in his own words. It contains important and useful information on the product, including; how (and why) the bearing isolator was invented; how it works; growth and development; contact and noncontact sealing methods; low power consumption; costs; maintenance; configurations and much more.
The Product:
A bearing isolator is a non-contact, non-wearing, permanent bearing protection device. It has a rotor and a stator, and the two are unitized, so that they don’t separate from one another while in use. Typically, the rotor turns with a rotating shaft, while the stator is pressed into a bearing housing. The two components interact to keep contamination out of the bearing enclosure and the lubricant in.
Benefits:
Protected bearings have proven to run 150,000 hours (17 years) or more, eliminating the need for continual maintenance and repair. Documented cases show that a plant can easily double the mean-time-between failure (MTBF) and reduce maintenance costs by at least half, with users reporting an extremely high ROI (Return on Investment).
Over one million of Inpro’s original bearing isolator designs are in operation in process plants worldwide, where end users continue to report significantly reduced operating costs with increased productivity and reliability. Bearing isolators are installed by OEM’s, retrofitted on existing equipment or specified by end users.
Recent Developments:
The only product that protects rolling element bearings on paper machines from the wet end to the dry end; IEEE motors that use bearing isolators as part of their specification and the standard for bearing protection; the VBX-H Series that protects machine tool spindle bearings from coolant, chips, humidity and heat; the OM 32 for that optimizes oil mist applications by eliminating stray emissions, environmental and housekeeping issues; and the Air Mizer™- PS a dry sealing system provides a positive seal in applications were dry particulates, powders and bulk solids are handled, processed, packaged and stored.
Company Information:
Inpro/Seal Company is the originator and leading manufacturer of bearing isolators, used to protect motor and pump bearings, machine tool spindles, turbines, fans, gearboxes, paper machine rolls and many other types of rotating equipment. Additional applications include the handling, processing, packing and storage of dry particulates, powders and bulk solids.
As the global leader in bearing isolator technology, Inpro products are marketed to the petroleum, refining, nuclear, power generation, metalworking, food processing, grain processing, chemical, water, wastewater treatment, metalworking, automotive, hydrocarbon processing, HVAC, pulp and paper, mining, mineral, ore processing and general industrial markets around the world.

Triple-Layer Forming Fabric Design, Geoflex TX 355, For Hygiene Paper Production
Manufacturer: Kufferath
Description: The Geoflex TX 355
- Combines an innovative design with proven forming fabric technology
- Offers longer lifetime through enhanced wear properties
- Provides improved fiber distribution for optimum formation
- Improves drainage while maximizing fiber retention
Details: For years, papermakers have been forced to choose between a long 5-shed sheet-side float for optimum sheet support and formation or a long 5-shed wear side float for improved life. The new Geoflex TX 355 design now provides producers of hygienic papers with the benefits of both.
The five-shed binding on the roll side improves abrasion resistance and increases the lifetime potential of the fabric. In addition, the design provides us with the option of using larger diameter bottom side weft yarns that alternate between PET and PA, further increasing abrasion resistance. The five-shed binding on the fabric’s paper side gives the fabric surface an enhanced CMD support structure which creates better fiber distribution, improved retention and better formation. This can also contribute to better sheet release and higher sheet tensile.
Applications: The Fiber Support Index (FSI) has increased by 5% to 152 in comparison to the current Geoflex T 242 triple-layer fabric now run on many tissue machines throughout Europe and Asia.
The weft ratio of 2:1 between paper side and roll side also increases the design’s drainage potential. In comparison to the now successful Geoflex T 242, the Geoflex T355 offers a dewatering index (DI) of 48.4, which is an 8% improvement over the Geoflex T 242.
Operating information: Dr. Heinz Odenthal, Vice President of Andreas Kufferath GmbH & Co. KG and responsible for the Forming Fabrics Division states: "The GTX 355 represents a clear technological improvement in comparison to the Geoflex T 242. The improved formation definitely offers added value for the most demanding hygiene paper producers worldwide."
Kufferath launched the new GTX 355 at its International Tissue Seminar, September 22-24, 2004.
About the Company: Andreas Kufferath GmbH & Co. KG manufactures technologically demanding capital expense and replacement goods for a range of markets.
