This course is designed to increase participants’ understanding of linerboard and medium manufacturing. It will be taught by Dr. Michael J. Kocurek, Professor, Paper Science & Engineering at North Carolina State University, one of the world’s most recognized educators in the pulp and paper industry. He will cover topics such as:
- Linerboard and medium properties and tests
- Effects of fiber raw materials and pulp mill operations
- Stock prep refining
- Additives
- Fourdrinier wet end operations and effects on sheet structure and properties
- Twin wire gap forming
- Pressing & Drying
- Size press
- Calendering
- Causes of strength variations
- And effects on product properties

Learning Outcomes:

- Describe and define linerboard and medium manufacturing processes, equipment, variables, and terminology, in order to improve operations and product quality.
- Recognize how one part of the process affects other operations in order to increase thinking on a mill wide scale.
- Interpret how process variables affect linerboard and medium sheet structure and properties, in order to troubleshoot variations in product quality.

CEUs
The Education Project Center of TAPPI has been reviewed and approved as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), 1620 I Street, NW, Suite 615, Washington, DC 20006 USA. TAPPI will award 1.3 CEUs to participants who attend all of the educational sessions and complete a final program evaluation.

Course Instructor
Dr. Michael J. Kocurek, Professor, Paper Science & Engineering at North Carolina State University, is one of the world’s most recognized educators in the pulp and paper industry. His focus is on Pulp and Paper Technology, Paper Properties, and Workforce and Professional Development. He has taught industry operators and professionals at over 60 paper industry corporations, government and other organizations, in addition to his teaching of undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, and North Carolina State University for almost 30 years. Mike has taught TAPPI’s oldest short course on Introduction to Pulp & Paper for more than 35 years. He has taught Wood & Pulping Chemistry at Wisconsin for 12 years; Paper Properties at Wisconsin and NC State for 16 years; and a distance learning web-based graduate course on Pulp and Paper Technology for 4 years. He is the editor of 11 books, and author of 25 video productions.
Dr. Kocurek received his B.S., M.S., and PhD degrees in Paper Science and Engineering from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and Syracuse University. He has served as Professor and Paper Science Department Head at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, an academic program he founded; and NC State University. He has also served as Executive Director of the Herty Foundation for the State of Georgia. While at Herty, he oversaw a $27 million modernization of the laboratory, creating the largest pilot-scale development center in the US.
His honors include TAPPI Fellow, TAPPI Distinguished Service Award, and induction into the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame – an honor bestowed to recognize people who have made preeminent contributions to the global paper industry.

Cancellation Policy:
If you find that you have to cancel, your full registration fee will be refunded if TAPPI’s Registration Department receives written notification (fax acceptable at +1.770.446.6947) by July 15, 2009. Please note: There will be a 50% refund for all written cancellations made after July 22, 2009. Understandably, after July 29, no refunds can be issued. Substitutions, however, will be accepted any time without a penalty.
