2009 Coated Paper Printability Course
THIS COURSE HAS BEEN CANCELLED
Need to better understand the requirements for coated papers in the printing processes?
Attend this intensive three-day course and learn the specifics of how and why ink and paper interact in both inkjet and digital printing settings. Learn how your paper choices will affect the finished product and how to better select paper to achieve your end result. It will be a hands-on course and you’ll work with paper samples to better understand how coated paper really works.
Who should attend?
Anyone that needs to understand paper and the printing process better. This includes Engineers, Technical Managers, Technical Service, Researchers, Customer Service, Sales and Technical Marketing Professionals at pulp and paper mills, printing facilities (inkjet or digital), and University Researchers, Students and Suppliers (of ink, and/or printing equipment).
What will you learn or gain from attending?
- How and why ink and paper interact in both conventional (offset/rotogravure) and digital printing settings
- How your paper choices will affect the finished product
- How to better select paper to achieve your end result.
- New trends in inkjet and digital printing
- Gain hands-on experience in a workshop with actual paper samples.
- Better knowledge of paper requirements for different printing methods.
- How to identify the different types of printing.
- Recognize typical printing defects and the cause for these.
- Recognize the materials used in various printing processes and their impact on quality.
- Identify the properties of coated paper that affect final print quality.
- Recognize problems on press due to ink and paper interactions.
- Analyze key print attributes on commercial prints, both sheet fed and web.
- Identify methods used to measure ink, paper and fountain solution interactions.
- Future demands and outlook for print media and digital printing methods.
The level of instruction for this class will be intermediate to advanced. To fully participate in this course, a basic knowledge of the printing process is required.
This course is being held simultaneously with PaperCon’09: The industry’s most comprehensive event of the year. By participating in this course you can benefit from complimentary access to PaperCon’09 exhibits,, keynote addresses, networking, a “Lunch and Learn”, Hot Topic Breakfast and hospitality receptions. To learn more about PaperCon’09, go to www.papercon.org.
Why should your boss send you?
Because you’ll return to work with better knowledge of paper, learn about profitability, reducing waste, and reducing the risk of costly mistakes associated with printing on the “wrong” paper. In addition to learning more about different printing processes (and products from these) the main focus of this course will be on lithographic offset printing. You’ll learn the basic workflow from prepress to final product and how paper effects print quality and runnability, recognize how to improve profitability in a printing process, identify how to decrease paper and printing costs, understand graphic arts terminology and explain problem solving at the printing press, handle troubleshooting – identify if paper or printing related, knowledge how to improve production efficiency and decrease variable costs, improve ink mileage, waste management, recognize future trends and challenges in conventional/digital printing and graphic media.
