Keynote Presentation
Dr. Peter Vukusic will present “Natural Systems for Bio-Inspired Designs: an Introduction to the Physics of Coloured Appearances in the Biological World" on Monday, October 11, 2010. He is the Associate Professor in Natural Photonics and Bioinspiration at the University of Exeter School of Physics.

Vukusic graduated from Imperial College, London in 1989 and from the University of Exeter in 1993 with a PhD in Optical Physics and then with a PGCE in physics. He completed a research fellowship at CSIRO Melbourne in 1994 and subsequently taught science in schools from 1994 to 1998. Vukusic returned to Exeter in 1998 as a research fellow to investigate structural color in natural systems. In 2001 he was awarded a 5-year Personal Fellowship from the BBSRC, and in 2003 was appointed permanent lecturer at the University of Exeter School of Physics. He became Associate Professor of Natural Photonics in 2008.

Vukusic runs a large research group at Exeter University School of Physics and its work comprises discovery, characterization and technological application of the unique optics and photonics systems that have evolved naturally in animals and plants. His work is frequently featured on scientific programs of the BBC and National Geographic. He regularly lectures on the science of light and color to schools, adult groups and to international audiences.

In 2004, Vukusic was awarded the L’Oreal Art and Colour of Science International Prize and in 2007 he was chosen as the Institute of Physics’ National School’s Lecturer.

Advanced Coating Fundamentals Dinner

Tradition and folklore will you surround you at the Symposium dinner, Tuesday, October 12 in the Lager Cellar at the Augustinerkeller. Since opening in 1812, the Augustinerkeller has been one of the most popular Bavarian restaurants in Munich. In addition to the restaurant, there is a large beer garden which is well visited by local residents.

In the 1800s, beer garden visitors could observe the "beer bull", which brought the beer up from its cool storage place in the cellar. Although this process was stopped in 1891, the beer garden is exactly as it was back then.
