This course is designed to increase participants’ understanding of linerboard and medium performance properties and manufacturing in order to improve corrugating box performance and runnability. It will be taught by Dr. Michael J. Kocurek, Professor, Paper Science & Engineering at North Carolina State University, one of the world’s most recognized educators in the pulp and paper industry.
He will cover topics such as:
- Linerboard and medium properties and tests; how these relate to the final box performance
- Performance effects of fiber raw materials and pulp mill operations; stock prep refining, strength and other additives; fourdrinier and multiply wet end operations and effects on sheet structure and properties; twin wire gap forming; pressing & drying and effects on properties; size press chemical addition; and calendaring
- New products and developments in corrugating, and in printing, that create new demands on linerboard /medium performance
- product performance properties, process fundamentals, current practices, improvement of processes , and new developments

New for 2010! Co-Instructor Chuck Klass will focus on new products and developments in linerboard, corrugating, and printing that create new demands on linerboard /medium performance.
Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing the course, participants should be able to:
- Describe and define linerboard and medium manufacturing processes, equipment, variables, and terminology, in order to improve operations and product quality.
- Recognize how one part of the process affects other operations in order to increase thinking on a mill wide scale.
- Interpret how process variables affect linerboard and medium sheet structure and properties, in order to troubleshoot variations in product quality.
What’s New for 2010?
Participants in the August 2009 course asked that more time be added to the course to cover all of the topics in more detail. The August 2010 course has incorporated their input to provide that additional depth.
The August 2010 course will include:
- New developments in corrugating, and their impacts on linerboard & medium performance
- For those who are new to the topics and pulp and papermaking processes, an optional half-day tutorial on papermaking will be offered prior to the start of the course. Additional registration and fees required.
The Optional Introduction to Pulp and Paper Seminar will take place from 1:00 pm- 5:00 pm on Monday, August 2, 2010 and will cover the following topics:
- Overview of Corrugating
- Overview of Tests & Properties
- Overview of Pulp Mill Operations
- Overview of Stock Preparation
- Overview of Paper Machine Operations

TAPPI will award 2.2 CEUs to participants who attend all of the educational sessions and complete a final program evaluation.
Course Instructor
Dr. Michael J. Kocurek, Professor of Paper Science & Engineering at North Carolina State University, is one of the world’s most recognized educators in the pulp and paper industry. His focus is on Pulp & Paper Technology, Paper Properties, and Workforce and Professional Development. He has taught over 3,000 industry operators and professionals at over 50 paper industry corporations, government and other organizations, including the Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the American and Forest Association (AF&PA); in addition to his teaching of undergraduate and graduate students since 1970.
He has taught in-mill company classroom short courses on Linerboard & Medium Manufacture to groups of operators at over 20 mill locations. Mike has also taught university courses on Paper Properties for 19 years. He is the editor of 11 books, including the recognized Pulp and Paper Manufacture series covering the entire field of pulp & paper. He has authored / co-authored 25 video publications, including the Introduction to Pulp & Paper series- again covering the entire field of pulp & paper. He is active in teaching distance learning courses.
Dr. Kocurek received his B.S., M.S., and PhD degrees in Paper Science & Engineering from the SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry, and Syracuse University. He has served as Paper Science Department Head at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, an academic program he founded; and NC State University.
His honors include TAPPI Fellow, TAPPI Distinguished Service Award, and induction into the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame – an honor bestowed to recognize people who have made preeminent contributions to the global paper industry.

Chuck Klass is a consultant with over five decades of paper industry experience. After graduation from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor's degree in pulp and paper technology, he worked with Union Camp manufacturing linerboard, corrugating medium and bag papers. He has worked in technical and operating positions with several other paper companies and in marketing and technical service for paper chemicals, machine clothing and paper mill machinery. In 1986 he became a consultant to the paper industry specialized in operations/quality improvement and development of value-added papers and paperboard; clients include producers of coated paper and paperboard worldwide and suppliers to the paper industry. He also teaches courses in paper machine operations improvement, sizing, coating and marketing for TAPPI, universities and suppliers to the industry. He has been a TAPPI member for over 50 years and has served as chairman of the Paper and Board Manufacture Division and on the Board of Directors.
Fees/Registration
On or before July 23, 2010 registration for the course is US $1095 for TAPPI members, US $1395 for Non-members.
