Complete – from Alum to Zeta Potential - TAPPI is offering an essential course for understanding the ways in which chemicals and additives affect your final product:
The TAPPI Introduction to Wet End Chemistry Course.
June 1-3, 2011
Norcross, Ga. USA
This course is designed to help papermakers and suppliers understand the principles of papermaking chemistry and to build a foundation for enhancing product quality and wet end chemistry troubleshooting. Participants will learn to:
- Better understand the effects that chemicals and other additives have on the papermaking process
- Address wet end issues with suppliers
- Make better judgments on selection and use of papermaking chemicals
- Determine viable approaches to problems or opportunities
- Contribute to troubleshooting projects on paper machines
Papermakers who are striving to improve product quality, increase machine productivity, and reduce costs and effective wet end chemistry practices can make a significant contribution toward these goals by attending this course.
Course Overview
The course includes a series of focused case studies, short subject matter presentations, question and answer opportunities, and in-class assignments of follow-up case analysis.
Each course participant will be assigned to a group comprised of six to eight people representing paper mills, suppliers, various experience levels and other backgrounds. Members of each group will be expected to spend up to two hours a day working on assigned case studies and problems. Each group will present their solution to the rest of the class. In addition, each group will develop questions to ask in the general Q&A sessions.
Learning Outcomes
After successfully completing this course, participants should be able to:
- Identify the properties of papermaking furnish and the process components and discuss how they interact to affect wet-end chemistry phenomena.
- Discuss possible solutions to paper machine process and paper quality problems associated with wet end additives and arising from chemical deposits.
- Identify additives that can be used to change the balance of charge for purposes of process control, trouble-shooting and optimization situations.
- Identify the most important factors affecting first-pass retention and the rate of drainage of water from the fiber mat during paper formation.
- Identify classes of wet-end chemical additives that can be used to achieve paper property objectives in various grades.

Meet the Instructor – Dr. Martin Hubbe
Martin A. Hubbe, Ph.D. is a TAPPI Fellow and currently serves as Professor in the Department of Wood and Paper Science at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C., USA. Hubbe graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, with a B.A. degree in Chemistry. He earned his M.S. from the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, Wisconsin, and received his Ph. D. from Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y. He began his post-college career with American Cyanamid Corp. as a research associate and continued his corporate work at International Paper Company as a research associate and later principal scientist.
Dr. Hubbe is a member of the American Chemical Society, TAPPI and is a frequent presenter. He wrote and published the TAPPI book Cost-Saving Strategies in Papermaking Chemistry with co-author Kasy King and wrote the introductory chapter of Jose Rodriguez’s TAPPI book Micro and Nano-particles in Papermaking. He has nearly 120 publications to his credit, including books and papers published in professional journals and courses at conferences. He holds five patents.
Who’ll Be Attending With You
This introductory- to intermediate-level course is designed for mill superintendents, development engineers, chemical and process engineers, chemists, process and quality control technicians, and sales and technical service representatives. Participants should have one to five years of paper industry experience and college-level chemistry and math courses are helpful.
