This course is designed to increase participants’ understanding of linerboard and medium performance properties and manufacturing in order to improve corrugating box performance and runnability. Course instruction will be led by Dr. Michael J. Kocurek, Professor, Paper Science & Engineering at North Carolina State University, one of the world’s most recognized educators in the pulp and paper industry.
He and the co-instructors will cover topics such as:
- Linerboard and medium properties and tests; how these relate to the final box performance
- Performance effects of fiber raw materials and pulp mill operations; stock prep refining, strength and other additives; fourdrinier and multiply wet end operations and effects on sheet structure and properties; twin wire gap forming; pressing & drying and effects on properties; size press chemical addition; and calendaring
- New products and developments in corrugating, and in printing, that create new demands on linerboard /medium performance
- product performance properties, process fundamentals, current practices, improvement of processes, and new developments

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing the course, participants should be able to:
- Describe and define linerboard and medium manufacturing processes, equipment, variables, and terminology, in order to improve operations and product quality.
- Recognize how one part of the process affects other operations in order to increase thinking on a mill wide scale.
- Interpret how process variables affect linerboard and medium sheet structure and properties, in order to troubleshoot variations in product quality.
The Optional Introduction to Pulp and Paper Seminar will take place from 1:00 pm- 5:00 pm on Monday, August 1, 2010 and will cover the following topics:
- Overview of Corrugating
- Overview of Tests & Properties
- Overview of Pulp Mill Operations
- Overview of Stock Preparation
- Overview of Paper Machine Operations

TAPPI will award 2.2 CEUs to participants who attend all of the educational sessions and complete a final program evaluation.
Course Instructors
Instructor: Dr. Michael J. Kocurek, Professor of Paper Science & Engineering at North Carolina State University, is one of the world’s most recognized educators in the pulp and paper industry. His focus is on Pulp & Paper Technology, Paper Properties, and Workforce and Professional Development. He has taught over 3,000 industry operators and professionals at over 50 paper industry corporations, government and other organizations, including the Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the American and Forest Association (AF&PA); in addition to his teaching of undergraduate and graduate students since 1970.
He has taught in-mill company classroom short courses on Linerboard & Medium Manufacture to groups of operators at over 20 mill locations. Mike has also taught university courses on Paper Properties for 19 years. He is the editor of 11 books, including the recognized Pulp and Paper Manufacture series covering the entire field of pulp & paper. He has authored / co-authored 25 video publications, including the Introduction to Pulp & Paper series- again covering the entire field of pulp & paper. He is active in teaching distance learning courses.
Dr. Kocurek received his B.S., M.S., and PhD degrees in Paper Science & Engineering from the SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry, and Syracuse University. He has served as Paper Science Department Head at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, an academic program he founded; and NC State University.
His honors include TAPPI Fellow, TAPPI Distinguished Service Award, and induction into the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame – an honor bestowed to recognize people who have made preeminent contributions to the global paper industry.

Co-Instructor: Charles P. Klass, President, Klass Associates Inc.
Chuck Klass is a consultant with over five decades of paper industry experience. After graduation from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor's degree in pulp and paper technology, he worked with Union Camp manufacturing linerboard, corrugating medium and bag papers. He has worked in technical and operating positions with several other paper companies and in marketing and technical service for paper chemicals, machine clothing and paper mill machinery. In 1986 he became a consultant to the paper industry specialized in operations/quality improvement and development of value-added papers and paperboard; clients include producers of coated paper and paperboard worldwide and suppliers to the paper industry. He also teaches courses in paper machine operations improvement, sizing, coating and marketing for TAPPI, universities and suppliers to the industry. He has been a TAPPI member for over 50 years and has served as chairman of the Paper and Board Manufacture Division and on the Board of Directors.
Co-Instructor: Darren K. Swales is the Technical Applications Group Manager for Kemira North America., where he leads a group of 28 strategically located Field Application Experts. The group interfaces closely with Kemira’s sales and research and development, as well as mill production staff to facilitate product development and application knowledge. He has a B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Analytical Chemistry and a Ph.D. degree in Colloidal Chemistry from University of Technology, Loughborough, UK. Following graduation in 1991 Darren conducted research related to alkaline sizing for Roe Lee Paper Chemicals in the UK. In 1996 Darren relocated to the USA as Technical Specialist and later as Chemicals Manager for Paper Sizes in North America for Raisio Chemicals. In early 1999 Darren joined Penford Products Co., Cedar Rapids, IA, as the Application Development Specialist, focusing on new carbohydrate-based strength additives. He joined Kemira Chemicals Inc., in August 2003 following the acquisition of Vulcan Performance Chemicals where he had been since early 2001. Vulcan was acquired by Kemira in 2002.
Darren is an active member of TAPPI, the vice-chair of the Paper Additives sub-committee, and the Additives track manager for PaperCon 2011. He is a member of the TAPPI Faculty for Wet End Chemistry Short Course. Darren is also a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and gained his US citizenship in 2009. He lives in Kennesaw, GA with his wife Erika and three children.
Co-Instructor: Peter A. Snyder is a National Sales Representative for Harper/Love Adhesives Corporation. He holds a BS degree in Textile Chemistry from Philadelphia University. Snyder is an active member of the Corrugated Packaging Division of TAPPI and sits on the Board of the TAPPI Foundation. He is a past member of several TAPPI Local Sections and has served on many TAPPI Committees. Currently he is the Chair of the Cullison Scholarship Committee. Snyder is a recipient of the TAPPI Corrugated Packaging Division Technical Award and the TAPPI Corrugated Packaging Division Leadership and Service Award.

If you find that you have to cancel, your full registration fee will be refunded if TAPPI’s Registration Department receives written notification (fax acceptable at +1.770.446.6947) by July 6, 2011. Please note: There will be a 50% refund for all written cancellations made after July 6, 2011, but no later than July 25, 2011. Understandably, after July 25, no refunds can be issued. Substitutions, however, will be accepted any time without a penalty.
