In this paper we present the physical method of ATR spectroscopy. It is an useful tool for the characterization of impregnates (films) as well as laminates – especially in respect to top resin layer compositions. Analysis of surfaces – whether for reasons of quality control or for defect analysis - is of growing importance in a competitive industry, which is driven by the need to optimize productivity and reduce waste rates. Technocell Dekor is always investigating new direct methods for quality description along the process chain. ATR spectroscopy, as an easy to use and fast method, allows a non destructive, contact free examination of an impregnate or laminate surface. On a given spot (1 mm²), it is possible to determine the resin composition of the surface and the ratio of the two common impregnation resins melamine formaldehyde (MF) / urea formaldehyde (UF). Many of the common surface defects are caused by urea migration to the surface. Therefore ATR spectroscopy can give useful hints for solving problems or even better to avoid them.
