Melamine Resin Production: Steering and Predicting Stability, 2002 Decorative and Industrial Laminates Symposium

The performance product in laminates, melamine, is always applied via a melamine resin solution. The properties of melamine resins are determining the quality of the end product, but also resin properties as such are important for resin producers and users. Resin storage stability is a main issue, always limited because of the “living polymer” nature. It is well known that there is an optimal resin cooking time with regard to the stability. Also with respect to process parameters like pH, temperature and water tolerance people experience their influence on stability.

It is the aim of this paper to establish relations between fundamental resin parameters and the resin storage stability. New insights were needed for that. The resulting breakthrough theory is supported by practical cases. Both physical and chemical structure of the resin determine its stability. Fit-for-use analytical techniques enable one to measure essentials in the resin structure. So, next to the establishment of fundamental insights, process- and product quality control with regard to stability becomes possible.
