Voith Launches merQbiz Digital Trading Platform for Paper Industry (3/15/2017)

Voith, Germany, is accelerating its digital transformation, taking yet another step in its digital agenda. The technology group has joined forces with the Boston Consulting Group Digital Ventures, Boston, Mass., USA, a subsidiary of the Boston Consulting Group, to establish a digital marketplace for the paper industry. The joint venture has been named merQbiz after Mercury, the Roman god of trade, and is headquartered in Manhattan Beach, Calif., USA.

VTT Explores New Use for Paper Industry Sludge and Fly Ash in Plastics (3/02/2017)

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has examined, as part of the EU’s Reffibre project, whether new industrial applications could be developed for various types of sludge and fly ash generated by the paper and board industry. Laboratory tests showed that these side streams can replace up to 50% of oil-based polypropylene. They can be used as a raw material in plastic composites made using injection molding and extrusion.

VTT Develops Stand-up Pouches from Renewable Raw Materials, Nanocellulose (3/16/2017)

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed lightweight 100% bio-based stand-up pouches with high technical performance. High performance in both oxygen, grease, and mineral oil barrier properties has been reached by using different biobased coatings on paper substrate. The pouches exploit VTT’s patent pending high consistency enzymatic fibrillation of cellulose (HefCel) technology.

Nine Dragons Orders Two Valmet Containerboard Machines for Mill in China (3/09/2017)

Valmet, Finland, will supply two containerboard production lines and related automation systems for Nine Dragons Industries Co. in China. The new production lines (PM 39 in Quanzhou and PM 40 in Chongqing) are planned to produce high-quality testliner and fluting grades out of 100% recycled raw materials. Startups of the machines are scheduled for 2018.

Global Sawlog Prices Continue Downward Trend (1/03/2016)

Global sawlog prices fell in the 3Q/16 after a temporary increase in the 2Q/16 following an almost two-year-long downward trend. Rainbow Trout to Taste Fish Feed from Forest Industry in Swedish Project (3/09/2017)

SALMONAID is a new Swedish project initiated by RISE Bioscience and Materials, Processum, SLU, and Domsjö Fabriker, and financed by Vinnova. With microorganisms cultivated on side streams from the forest industry, the project aims to optimize the process for production of microbe-based protein with higher protein content, as well as try out oil production, to use as salmon feed. The raw material will then be evaluated as a substitute for primarily soy-based but also fish-based feedstock used in today’s fish feed.

SSA Suspends Mailing of Earnings Statements (1/13/2017)

Consumers for Paper Options, a coalition advocating for access to important paper-based services and information, Washington, D.C., USA, yesterday (Jan. 11, 2017) expressed strong opposition to a new decision by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to suspend the mailing of Social Security Statements to workers under the age of 60. The move comes despite a measure in the Fiscal Year 2014 funding bill requiring the Social Security Administration to “significantly restore” the mailing of earnings statements. In response to Congress’ 2014 directive, the agency resumed mailing a statement every five years to every American ages 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, and 60, who has not signed up for online statements.
