Valmet Expands European Roll Service with New Center in Sweden (2/21/2017)

Valmet, Finland, has expanded its roll maintenance operations with the latest technology equipment for rubber and composite roll covers in Karlstad, Sweden. This investment particularly strengthens Valmet's service capabilities close to its customers in Scandinavia, while also supporting Valmet's roll service offering to customers throughout Europe. The extended roll service center started operating at the end of 2016.

Pope Resources Closes $381 Million Timber Fund (1/06/2017)

Pope Resources, Poulsbo, Wash., USA, this week announced that its subsidiary, Olympic Resource Management LLC (ORMLLC), has closed ORM Timber Fund IV (Fund IV), a private equity timber fund, with $381 million of committed capital, 15% of which, or $57 million, will be co-invested by Pope Resources. ORMLLC is actively looking for timberland properties to acquire on behalf of Fund IV, which will invest in commercial timberlands in the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S.

Stora Enso Invests EUR 28 Million in Heinola Fluting (2/10/2017)

Stora Enso, Finland, is investing EUR 28 million at its Heinola Fluting Mill in Finland to meet a growing customer demand globally. The investment improves quality as well as increases production capacity of its AvantFlute SC product portfolio. Implementation of the investment is scheduled to start immediately with completion in the second quarter of 2018.

Guangdong Shaoneng Orders 26,000 MTPY Tissue Machine from A.Celli (2/01/2017)

In the fourth quarter of 2016, GuangDong ShaoNeng Group Co., Shanghai, China, for the first time, ordered a tissue machine line from A.Celli Paper, Italy. The scope of supply included a stock preparation system, electrical and drive system, DCS & QCS, accessory equipment, and the tissue machine itself, in a 2,850-mm format and operation speed up to 1,600 m/min. Production capacity is up to 26,000 metric tpy.

Sappi Announces $165 million PM Rebuild at Somerset Mill in Skowhegan, Maine (2/09/2017)

Sappi Ltd., Johannesburg, South Africa, a global producer and supplier of diversified wood fiber products, yesterday (Feb.8, 2017) announced the approval of a range of projects in Europe and the U.S, including the approval of a $165 million capital project to expand Sappi North America's manufacturing capabilities and flexibility to include a variety of consumer packaging products. This investment on PM No. 1 at its Somerset Mill in Skowhegan, Maine, establishes a strong platform for growth in paper-based packaging while maintaining Sappi's leadership position in the graphic paper market, increasing annual production capacity at this mill to almost one million tons per annum.

ABB, Zurich, Switzerland, has launched L&W Freeness Online, a reliable, repeatable, and cost-effective online system for measuring, monitoring, and controlling key quality variables—Canadian Standard Freeness (CSF) and Schopper-Riegler (SR)—in paper stock preparation. This helps pulp and paper customers to save production costs by reducing energy consumption through elimination of over-refining, and to improve quality by generating uniform pulp furnish for paper, board, or tissue machines.

Sonoco Increasing Prices for Paperboard Tubes and Cores (1/20/2017)

Sonoco, Hartsville, S.C., USA, this week announced it is implementing price increases for all paperboard tubes and cores in the U.S. and Canada by a minimum of 8%. Sonoco previously announced a 6% to 8% price increase on all paperboard tubes and cores in October 2016, and the company is revising the increase to a minimum of 8%, effective with shipments beginning Feb. 13, 2017.

Explosion at PCA’s DeRidder, La., Containerboard Mill Kills Three, Injures Seven (2/13/2017)

Packaging Corp. of America (PCA), Lake Forest, Ill., USA, reports that at approximately 11:10 a.m. CST on Wednesday of this past week (Feb. 8, 2017), there was an explosion at its DeRidder, La. containerboard mill. The incident involved annual repair work being performed on piping in the pulp mill area and resulted in three contractor fatalities. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
