Final week of voting for TAPPI BOD Election
All TAPPI members are encouraged to vote in the 2008 TAPPI Board of Directors Election. All ballots must be received by 11:59 p.m. EST on January 15, 2008. Ballots and voting instructions have been sent via email to TAPPI Members. Emails were distributed by Election Services Corp (ESC), an independent election firm that will count the ballots and report the results. Ballots will be counted and the results announced on Friday, January 18, 2008.
Members have the option to cast ballots electronically at a secure website. Use your member number and the Election Validation Number from your ballot email to access online voting. Meet tomorrow's leaders at 2008 TAPPI/PIMA Student Summit
The word has gotten out about the innovative program at this year's TAPPI/PIMA Student Summit! With the theme of "Re-energizing the Paper Industry - New Opportunities Abound," the program will include technical sessions on sustainability, the state of the industry, and BioEnergy. The 2008 Student Summit will be held in Atlanta January 19-21, 2008. The event is sponsored by TAPPI, PIMA, and CPBIS.
Several TAPPI or PIMA professional members have asked if they could enjoy the program, and mingle a bit with the students. Congratulations to VA-CA TAPPI
The year 2007 brought a historic milestone for one TAPPI Local Section, as members of VA-CA TAPPI (the Virginia-Carolina Local Section) celebrated its 50th Anniversary. The commemoration of this remarkable achievement took place in Kingsport, Tennessee during a first-ever joint meeting between three TAPPI Local Sections. Along with Domtar Inc., Southeastern TAPPI, Ohio TAPPI, and Virginia-Carolina TAPPI were proud to host the successful educational and celebratory event, which was geared for the mill and converting professionals and those who service them. Technical sections at the meeting were focused on papermaking, pulping, energy conservation and the future of the paper industry. A tour of Domtar's state-of-the-art Kingsport pulp mill and bleach plant capped the event.
A highlight of the anniversary celebration was the presence of several of the group's past chairpersons and officers. "These volunteers did a marvelous job, and without everybody's involvement it would be impossible to commemorate this day," said current VA-CA Chair Dr. Bindu Dhasmana in her address to the group. "The contributions of past and present members and officers will always be appreciated."
MOTAG-South plans Winter Meeting in Atlanta
The TAPPI Mill Operations Technical Advancement Group (MOTAG) South will hold its Winter 2008 meeting January 31 - February 1 at the Renaissance Concourse Hotel in Atlanta, GA. Pacific Section Winter Meeting highlight energy issues
Pacific Section TAPPI's winter meeting will highlight energy issues facing the pulp and paper industry. The meeting will feature a luncheon keynote address by Dan Burciaga, President of Thermochem Recovery International, a leading firm in the application of gasification technology to our industry's energy challenges.
The meeting will be held February 7, 2008 at the Portland Airport Shilo Inn. The all-day session will also feature speakers from major industry equipment and service suppliers as well as mill personnel describing their approach to comprehensive energy management.
Representatives of the Industrial Efficiency Alliance will present a strategy to integrate lean manufacturing and continuous energy efficiency into an effective comprehensive energy management program. Attendees will take away tactical approaches to reducing their energy cost that can be applied without significant capital spending.

Discuss paper mill residuals with Lake States TAPPI
Lake States TAPPI is organizing a "Symposium on the Management and Utilization of Paper Mill Residuals." The symposium will be held on February 25-26, 2008 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It will highlight ways to reduce contaminants coming into the mill, improve yield and quality of fiber in the mill, plus ways to use mill residuals for products and energy. Identify ways to reduce costs and improve operations at this informative seminar!
There will also be a Roundtable discussion highlighting new and innovative ways to handle mill residuals, plus a trade show spotlighting equipment, processes and products that increase mill efficiencies and use of mill residuals. TAPPI BIM Committee plans Spring Meeting

TAPPI's Building & Industrial Material Committee will be returning by popular demand to Marco Island for its 2008 Spring Meeting. The technical program will include a guest speaker, "Company Overviews" and subject-focused papers. Recreational activities will include a sailing dinner on Wednesday and fishing and golf on Thursday afternoon, with dinner at Konrad's. All with an interest in this important area are invited to attend.
Call for Papers: The BIM Committee needs papers for its 2008 Spring Meeting, as well as for the International Nonwovens Technical Conference (INTC) in September, 2008. It's a great opportunity to share your expertise and learn from your peers!
All that is required for the Spring session is a Power Point presentation. As an incentive, the best paper for Spring will be awarded the 10,000(¢) Richard Dobrowolski Award (in honor of the BIM Committee's last Chairman).
The INTC program represents an excellent opportunity for others to learn about the building and industrial materials industry. Papers for INTC should be longer and more technical than for the Spring meeting. The abstract requirement has been modified; in lieu of the abstract one can file a three-page summary along with a Power Point presentation.
