THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY (DOE) reports that it will invest $86 million over the next four years in three new cellulosic ethanol biorefineries, to be built by Ecofin, Mascoma, and RSE Pulp & Chemical. The small-scale biorefineries will produce ethanol from non-edible cellulosic biomass sources, such as corncobs, wood chips, and switchgrass.
Ecofin plans to build a biorefinery in Washington County, Ky., which will use a novel fermentation process to convert corncobs into more than 1 million gal of ethanol per year, as well as other products. Mascoma's biorefinery in Vonore, Tenn., will convert switchgrass and wood chips into 2 million gal of ethanol per year using a biochemical process that employs ethanol-producing bacteria. It will burn lignin from the biomass to provide heat for the process. RSE Pulp & Chemical, a subsidiary of Red Shield Environmental, plans to build a biorefinery at its pulp and paper mill in Old Town, Me. Hemicellulose extracted from the wood pulp will be used to produce 2.2 million gal of ethanol per year.
Mascoma is scheduled to begin its operations in 2009, while the other two facilities are expected to start operating in 2010. Such small-scale biorefineries are meant to test novel conversion technologies, providing information needed to scale up to a commercial biorefinery, which would typically produce 20-30 million gal of ethanol per year. The biorefineries in Maine and Kentucky will each receive up to $30 million dollars in DOE funding, while the Tennessee facility will receive up to $26 million.
CHESAPEAKE CORP., Richmond, Va., USA, has elected David Winter and Christopher Naftzger as corporate officers. Winter was named assistant VP-human resources, and Naftzger was named assistant secretary and assistant general counsel. Winter has served as director of human resources since joining the company in 1997. Naftzger has served as assistant general counsel since joining the company in July 2007.
FUJIAN NANPING PAPER CO. has ordered a new fine paper machine from Metso Paper of Finland for its mill in the Fujian Province of China. The value of the order is around EUR 50 million. Delivery will include a complete paper machine from headbox to reel, with related air systems. Metso Automation will supply a quality management system including cross directional and machine directional controls. The paper machine will have a wire width of 5.8 m and a design speed of 1 400 m/min. It will produce nearly 800 metric tpd of uncoated fine paper. Production startup is scheduled for the second half of 2009. Fujian Nanping Paper currently operates three paper machines at the Nanping mill site with an annual papermaking capacity of around 300,000 metric tons.
GRAPHIC PACKAGING INTERNATIONAL, Marietta, Ga., USA, will discontinue folding carton manufacturing at its operations in Middletown, Ohio, by the end of the third quarter. The company also will cease production at its paper lamination plant in Elk Grove Village, Ill. Both announcements are part of Graphic Packaging's overall realignment and consolidation of operations to optimize its manufacturing footprint and to achieve the $90 million in synergies identified in its recent combination with Altivity Packaging. The company's boxboard mill, also located at the Middletown site, will continue to produce coated-recycled paperboard for the consumer packaging industry, and also will continue to operate its two folding carton plants at the Elk Grove Village location.
MEADWESTVACO, Richmond, Va., USA, has received chain of custody certification to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) chain of custody standards. The dual certification covers the company's four U.S.-based paperboard mills in Covington, Va., Evadale, Texas, Mahrt, Ala., and Charleston, S.C. The certifications also apply to the company's sheeting and extruding facilities in Low Moor, Va., Silsbee, Texas, and Venlo, Netherlands, and 12 of the company's integrated package converting plants in North America, Europe, and Asia.
IN OTHER MEADWESTVACO NEWS, the company has appointed Gautam Sircar managing director for its operations in India. Sircar will have responsibility for all aspects of establishing and maintaining MWV's business within the geographical region encompassing India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. His most recent role was CEO of Kloeckner Pentaplast India Ltd, the Indian unit of the international producer of films for packaging, printing, and specialty applications.
PULPWOOD COSTS IN BRAZIL are going up in the wake of increased competition for smaller logs, according to a report by the Wood Resource Quarterly (WRQ). Wood costs in the 4Q/07 were almost twice the level of four years ago as competition for the smaller logs intensified between the pulp, energy, and wood panel sectors, according to the WRQ report. Brazilian pulp mills had to pay 8% more for open-market pulpwood and wood chips in the 4Q/07, compared with the previous quarter. The increased competition pushed smaller log prices to an average of almost $100/odmt in the 4Q. Less than four years ago, pine pulpwood prices were just over $20/odmt. The pulpwood market in Brazil has gone through a major transformation, from previously having had some of the lowest conifer fiber costs in the world to being close the global average as reported by WRQ. Eucalyptus pulpwood prices purchased in the open market have experienced a similar price trend the past five years with record prices in 2007. The majority of the eucalyptus wood fiber consumed by Brazilian pulp mills is still internally sourced at a cost lower than the market price. Hardwood pulpwood costs in Brazil remain among the lowest of all regions tracked by the WRQ, with only Indonesia, Chile, and the U.S. South having lower delivered wood costs.
SMART PAPERS, Hamilton, Ohio, USA, reports that it has completed the acquisition of seven brands of premium writing, text and cover, and cotton stationery brands from Montreal-based Domtar Corp. The brands acquired are Feltweave, Nekoosa Linen, Nekoosa 25% Cotton, Nekoosa Bond, Skytone, Solutions, and Proterra. The company's sales, marketing, customer service representatives, manufacturing, and warehousing will serve all Domtar premium uncoated customers from SMART Papers' U.S. headquarters and warehouse in Hamilton.
SMURFIT-STONE CONTAINER CORP., Chicago, Ill., USA, has signed a letter of intent to take controlling interest in Calpine Corrugated LLC, an independent corrugated container producer based in Fresno, Calif. According to Smurfit Stone, Calpine has experienced startup losses since it began operations in 2006. Smurfit-Stone, which is the primary containerboard supplier to Calpine, will record a charge of $0.05 per share in the first quarter to reserve for amounts due from the company. Under the restructuring agreement, Smurfit-Stone will take a 90% ownership interest in Calpine. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter.
UNITED STEELWORKERS (USW) union has filed charges against Appleton Paper for "unilaterally and illegally changing the terms and conditions of employment" of about 370 hourly production and maintenance workers who are represented by USW Local 10-0422 at Appleton's Roaring Spring, Penn., USA, mill. The union said that its unfair labor practice allegations, which were filed with Region 6 of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) April 18, also include charges of "refusing to bargain and breaking the previous contract, which had been extended while negotiations over a new one proceeded." Members of USW Local 10-0422 reportedly rejected the company's last two contract offers by votes of 350-1 and most recently by 344-1.
WEYERHAEUSER, Federal Way, Wash., USA, has elected Daniel Fulton its new president and CEO, and a member of the company's board of directors, effective immediately. He assumes the role of CEO from Steven Rogel, who remains chairman in a non executive role. Fulton has been president of Weyerhaeuser since January 1. Prior to assuming that role, he served as president and CEO of Weyerhaeuser Real Estate, a subsidiary of the company, since 2001., and president and CEO of Weyerhaeuser Realty Investors, also a subsidiary of the company, from 1998 to 2000, its COO from 1996 to 1997, and its chief investment officer from 1994 to 1995. Rogel was elected chairman and CEO of Weyerhaeuser on April 20, 1999. Prior to assuming the title of chairman, he served as president and CEO, and a member of the board of directors since Dec. 1, 1997
IN OTHER WEYERHAEUSER NEWS, the company also announced that Mark Emmert, president of the University of Washington, would join its board of directors effective June 1. The company additionally named Kevin Shearer VP, Information Technology and CIO, effective May 1. He succeeds Susan Mersereau, who is retiring. Shearer has served as VP, IT Business Operations since 2007. He joined Weyerhaeuser in 1980 and has held numerous information technology positions for Timberlands, Corporate Support, and Wood Products.
BOISE, Bensenville, Ill., USA, has launched a line of communication papers for a variety of printing and converting applications that have earned Chain of Custody certification from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). These include Aspen recycled opaque, Aspen 50 & 100 recycled envelopes, Fireworks colored wove envelopes, Fireworx colored form bond, Aspen premium recycled imaging papers, and HD:P imaging papers.
BOISE also reports that its Beware, an anti-copy/anti-scan paper, now complies with federal guidelines for paper-based security in Medicaid papers by offering two tamper-resistant features. According to the federal mandate for tamper-resistant prescription pads, papers must have met one of three criteria by April 1. Medicaid prescription papers must meet all three criteria by October 1. Boise notes that Beware currently meets two of the three criteria.
HUHTAMAKI, Espoo Finland, has introduced a new bio-coated paper packaging for packaged foods. The range of BioWare, originally launched in 2004, has been extended to include bio-coated paperboard packaging for ice cream and chilled dairy products such as yogurt. Paperboard cups for chilled dairy and yogurt applications are double side coated with biopolymer and have similar performance characteristics as standard PE-coated paperboard packaging. Ice cream containers and spiral wound lids are made of paperboard that is single-side biopolymer coated. Huhtamaki says that the products are as strong and rigid as their PE coated counterparts

Nonwovens: New Technology + Call for Papers
