Comments:
The Forest Discovery Center at the Cradle of Forestry in
America features interactive exhibits on forest ecosystems
and habitats, careers, forest products, forest history,
and the first forestry school in America (1898). The site
is managed by the USDA Forest Service and Cradle of Forestry
in America Interpretive Association. Groups should call
for reservations for special trail tours or interpretive
programs. Allow 2-3 hours for visits. Offers two one-mile
paved walking trails, either self-guided or with a guide.
One focuses on the Biltmore Forest School (historic cabins);
the other, the Forest Festival Trail, focuses on forestry
practices, past and present. Activity sheets in the exhibit
hall entrance enhance the visit for visitors of all ages.
The Forest Discovery Center works with visiting scouts on
forestry merit badges, and also offers special events, including
Smokey's Birthday Party in August and Forest Festival Day
in October. Also celebrates Arbor Day and Earth Day.
