The Perfect Match

The widely varied paper and related industries employ people who have training and expertise in many different areas. While there are literally hundreds of different career opportunities available in the industry, the primary ones are related to engineering, timber operations, manufacturing, research and development, technical sales and marketing, and administration.

Process and Design Engineering

Throughout the paper industry, engineers are valued for their ability to create industrial policies and practices that maximize the productivity of a plant. They also are responsible for coordinating the design and construction of new manufacturing facilities, the modification and improvement of existing facilities, and the supervision of all processes.

Civil, mechanical, chemical and electrical engineering skills can all be valuable assets. In addition, there is an emerging engineering skill that is becoming more and more important to the industry - the systems engineer. This individual provides the control system expertise that’s needed to design and operate the process controls and computers that run the industry’s new high-speed paper machines.

Timber Operations

The main source of fiber for papermaking in the US is, of course, wood. And the demand for wood fiber is expected to increase dramatically as the world’s population continues to grow. Graduates from professional schools of forestry will play a key role in the purchase, management and renewal of timberlands. Their knowledge will be crucial in purchasing and harvesting pulpwood, improving the pulpwood yield per acre, protecting our natural resources and maintaining a rotating, never-ending supply of trees to meet the world’s demands

Manufacturing

Many of today’s pulp and paper mills operate around the clock. It takes skilled people to plan the production process, supervise production to keep operations running smoothly, and to provide the foresight and preventative maintenance needed to avoid breakdowns or interruptions. People trained in the engineering disciplines, or in mathematics or the classical sciences, are needed for these positions. In addition, talented electricians, pipe and steam fitters, and machine operators all play a major role in the day-to-day operations of the mills. A formal technical background is generally required for these positions.

Likewise, environmental engineers are crucial to the papermaking process. These professionals play a key role in protecting public health and safety by creating effective pollution controls, reducing the environmental impact of mill operations, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations, and making sure the mills are safe, efficient and compatible with their local communities. Look to the chemical and civil engineering disciplines, as well as to biology and chemistry, to prepare you for this important field.

To make sure that the finished products meet the highest standards, mills rely on quality control experts. These individuals are responsible for the stringent testing and evaluation of all paper and paperboard products. Their backgrounds usually include industrial engineering, chemistry or statistics.

"The most rewarding aspect of my job is that the daily challenges are never the same. We make our product at a rate of 45 tons per hour and it's exciting to find new and better ways to improve our products for our customers."

Paper Machine Assistant Superintendent,
Inland Eastex

The pulp and paper industry invests $10 billion annually in new equipment and technology.

Research & Product Development

Professionals in R&D are responsible for finding the new ideas and improved applications that keep the paper industry on the cutting edge of technology. Their talent is needed to develop new paper products, find solutions to air and stream pollution, and create more efficient production schemes. In this field, formal training and advanced degrees are often required in physics, organic and polymer chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, biology, mathematics, paper science, engineering or ecology.

Technical Sales & Marketing

Once the products are created at the pulp and paper facilities, they must be marketed to a wide variety of users. Individuals who can combine a flair for marketing with an engineering or technical background are well-suited to promote and sell the right products for each buyer’s needs. In addition, there are literally thousands of sales and marketing opportunities at companies that supply equipment, chemicals, and engineering design services to pulp and paper manufacturing facilities.

"I would call my work scientific, yet creative. Specializing in consumer products, it's fascinating to help create products that I can ultimately see people using!"

Administration

In any business, talented people are needed to perform the important management and administrative jobs at their companies. Many college graduates entering the paper and related industries become managers within their first five years of employment. Legal professionals are also necessary to oversee the lawful operation of the company.

Other Positions

There are opportunities in other industries which are directly or indirectly related to the paper industry. These include jobs in agriculture, product packaging, chemical products, government, industrial products, engineering design, scientific instruments, machinery, pollution control, containers, printing, consulting, marketing, sales and many more.

The US has 13.2 million acres of old growth - enough to form a band 5 miles wide stretching coast to coast.

International Opportunities

The US paper industry has become a major player in the global market. Many companies are expanding their domestic operations to jointly or wholly owned companies overseas. This trend means that professionals in the industry will find increasing opportunities for international travel. It is not uncommon for some paper industry professionals, as well as those in engineering consulting, to spend up to a year or more on assignments abroad.

The companies within the paper and related industries provide excellent employment situations. They offer starting salaries that are highly competitive with those of traditional engineering disciplines, and comprehensive benefits packages that include such features as incentive bonuses, paid vacations, health insurance and retirement plans.
