Sappi to Establish Renewable Sugar Extraction Demo Plant (6/15/2016)

According to a report Tuesday (June 14) by Engineering News (Bedfordview, South Africa), Sappi (Johannesburg, South Africa) is preparing to explore and optimize the extraction of biorenewable chemicals after signing an agreement with global supplier Valmet to build a second-generation sugar extraction demonstration plant at the company's Ngodwana mill.

New Research Reveals Method for Cheap Wood Waste Biochemical (6/27/2016)

According to research published earlier this month (June 13) by the ETH Zurich Studies & Research Group (Zurich, Switzerland), there has been a breakthrough in the manufacture of a common industrial chemical from wood waste as opposed to crude oil. Vitamins, medication, solvents, crop protection products, and polymers -- in the future, it will be possible to manufacture many of these from wood waste if this new method holds promise in industrial application.

New Study Finds Lignin is Highly Effective in Sunscreen (6/17/2016)

According to a new study, cited this week by The Indian Express (Uttar Pradesh, India), lignin, a natural material in plants and a major "waste product" of the pulp and paper industry, can be added to sunscreen creams to protect people from getting sunburn.

Stora Enso, Volvo Cars Inaugurate Renewable Energy Pipeline (11/28/2016)

Stora Enso, Finland, and Volvo Cars, Sweden, officially opened a new hot water pipeline between their manufacturing sites in Ghent, Belgium, on Nov. 18, 2016. The 4-km pipeline will take hot water heated using renewable energy from Stora Enso’s paper mill to the Volvo plant, where it will be used to heat buildings and paint booths. The annual reductions in CO₂ emissions correspond to the heating of 5,000 households.

Canfor Reports Interest in Kraft Pulp Waste to Biocrude Conversion (6/27/2016)

Scientists with the Australian startup Licella reported this past week (June 22) they have successfully devised a way to use biomass waste from the kraft papermaking process to make a more refined and efficient form of energy for the industry, petroleum substitute – biocrude oil – that has now attracted the interest of Canadian P&P producer CanFor (Vancouver, B.C.).

Evoqua to Provide Systems for Bioenergy Plant at P&G Tissue Mill in Georgia (8/10/2016)

Evoqua, Warrendale, Pa., USA, was selected by energy developer DCO Energy LLC to provide equipment and services for a new $200 million, 50 MW biomass/wood waste-to-energy cogeneration project for Procter & Gamble Co. in Albany, Georgia. The new plant, to be built by DCO Energy, will provide 100% of the steam energy used by P&G's Albany manufacturing facility. The steam will be used mainly for drying tissue paper.

Quebec Government, Cascades Invest $11.3 Million in Two Energy Efficiency Projects (2/13/2017)

KPA Unicon to Deliver Biomass-Fired Steam Plant to Metsä Tissue Mill (2/16/2017)

Finland-based Metsä Tissue AB and KPA Unicon Oy have signed a contract for the delivery of Biograte 8 MWth steam boiler plant to Metsä Tissue Nyboholm, Sweden. The plant uses as a fuel biosludge in addition to wood chips, bark, and sawdust, and it produces steam for the paper mill machinery. The new plant enables efficient combustion of process residues, such as biosludge, generating steam for the mill.

Canada’s First Biomass Torrefaction Plant Begins Commercialization of Products (3/01/2017)
