U.K. Wood Pellet Imports Fall 24% after Record High Imports in H1/2016 (11/04/2016)

The U.K. is by far the largest importer of wood pellets in the world, followed by Denmark, South Korea, and Belgium. In the 2Q/16, the U.K. imported record volumes of just over two million tons, which was 11% higher than the previous quarter and 21% more than in the 2Q/15. Pellet producers in the U.S. South continue to be the major suppliers to the U.K., accounting for about 50% of total import volume in 2Q/16. The other major supplying countries are Canada and Latvia.

Canada’s First Biomass Torrefaction Plant Begins Commercialization of Products (3/01/2017)

This week, Airex Energy officially inaugurated its biomass torrefaction plant, located in the La Prade industrial park in Bécancour, Que., Canada. The industrial size demonstration plant, which required around C$10 million in public and private investments for its design, construction, and startup, showcases the latest biomass torrefaction technology, called CarbonFX™. This unique, revolutionary technology, designed by Airex Energy, significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions for many industries still using coal or coal by-products.

Japan’s Buzen New Energy to Install Valmet Biomass Boiler (3/28/2017)

Skövde Inaugurates Valmet Delivered Biomass Power Plant in Sweden (3/29/2017)

The inauguration of Skövde Värmeverk’s (Sweden) new Valmet (Finland)-delivered biomass based power plant was held this past week. The inauguration speech was delivered by Minister for Policy Coordination and Energy Ibrahim Baylan. Other speakers in the inauguration were Sammy Tanhua, CEO of Skövde Värmeverk, Chairman of the Board Philip Segell, and Municipal Counsellor Leif Walterum. The official inauguration was followed by a tour at the power plant.

Stora Enso, Volvo Cars Inaugurate Renewable Energy Pipeline (11/28/2016)

Stora Enso, Finland, and Volvo Cars, Sweden, officially opened a new hot water pipeline between their manufacturing sites in Ghent, Belgium, on Nov. 18, 2016. The 4-km pipeline will take hot water heated using renewable energy from Stora Enso’s paper mill to the Volvo plant, where it will be used to heat buildings and paint booths. The annual reductions in CO₂ emissions correspond to the heating of 5,000 households.

New Study Finds Lignin is Highly Effective in Sunscreen (6/17/2016)

Finnpulp Granted Enviro Permit for World’s First Intelligent Bioproduct Plant (4/07/2017)

The Regional State Administrative Agency of Finland has granted the environmental permit for Finnpulp's bioproduct plant, which is to be built in Sorsasalo, Kuopio, Finland, and the wastewater treatment facility connected to the plant. The environmental permit defines the terms for the pulp plant's operation in the production phase, as well as for pipeline installation work and changes made to the shore line during the construction phase.

Norske Skog Saugbrugs Develops New Biogas Fuel Technology ( (4/13/2017)

Norske Skog, Norway, has been granted NOK 15.7 million over four years from the Research Council of Norway to further develop the production of biogas fuel at the Norske Skog Saugbrugs in Halden, Norway. The project, called "Pyro Gas", has a total budget of NOK 31.5 million. The project fits well into Saugbrugs' strategy of developing new fiber and energy products in synergy with existing paper production.
