Volga to Install Andritz ATMP System at Pulp Mill in Russia (9/21/2016)

Andritz, Graz, Austria, has received an order from JSC Volga in Balakhna, Nizhegorodskaya oblast, Russia, to deliver a complete state-of-the-art ATMP (Advanced Thermo-mechanical Pulp) line, which will process 100% spruce for the production of softwood pulp. Startup of the new line, which will be combined with existing equipment, is scheduled for 2019.

Tembec Orders Valmet QCS for Tartas SAS in France (9/21/2016)

Tembec's (Canada) specialty dissolving pulp mill in Tartas, France, has ordered a Valmet IQ quality control system (QCS) and an expansion of its existing Valmet DNA distributed control system (DCS) for its pulp dryer. By complementing its current control system with this investment, the mill is targeting to improve process stability and reduce lost time during transition phases such as startups, breaks, and speed changes. Startup of the new QCS is scheduled for October 2016. Typically the order value of this kind of automation system deliveries is below EUR 1 million, according to Valmet.

Global Pulpwood Prices Rise (10/11/2016)

Wood fiber costs currently account for almost 60% of the cash costs when manufacturing wood pulp. Prices for both wood chips and pulp logs have trended downward for a long time, but this came to an abrupt halt in the 2Q/16 when the softwood price index rose 2.3% and the hardwood price index increased 3.7% from the 1Q/16, according to the latest Wood Resource Quarterly, Seattle, Wash., USA.

Hardwood Chip Prices at Record Low, Softwood Prices Highest in Seven Months (8/03/2016)

Global trade of hardwood chips have trended upward for six years and totaled almost 24 million tons in 2015. By far, the two largest wood chip-importing markets are Japan and China, both countries with limited forest resources to supply the pulp industry with sufficient wood fiber.

Tronox Increases Soda Ash Prices (8/01/2016)

Tronox (Stamford, Conn., USA) announced today (August 1) that effective immediately, or as contract terms permit, Tronox Alkali will increase soda ash prices by $10.00 per short ton for all grades of soda ash. The increase applies to both bulk and packaged products.

Sappi N.A. to Upgrade Woodyard Systems at Somerset Mill in Maine (10/24/2016)

Andritz, Graz, Austria, has received an upgrade order from Sappi North America for a high-capacity debarking line and woodyard equipment to be installed at Sappi’s Somerset Mill in Skowhegan, Me., USA. The new line will further reduce wood losses and enhance the mill’s reliability and performance. Commissioning of the new line, which has a design capacity of 300 tons per hour of hardwood chips and 270 tons per hour of softwood chips, is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2017.

Rottneros Starts up Valmet High Consistency Bleaching System (10/25/2016)

Rottneros, Sweden, has started up a new high consistency bleaching system according to plan at one of its two pulp mills in Sweden. The startup was smooth and the 48 hr. test run was approved.

Recovering and Recycling Paper has Saved Energy (10/20/2016)

The recovery, or recycling, of paper and paperboard in the U.S. has increased from 34% of supply in 1990 to 67% of supply in 2015, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administation (EIA), Washington, D.C., USA. Most of this recovered paper is consumed in the U.S., but some is exported. Based on data from the American Forest and Paper AssociationAmerican Forest and Paper Association, domestic consumption of recovered paper at U.S. mills increased to 31 million tons in 2015, while net recovered paper exports increased to 21 million tons.

Prexair to Supply Oxygen to Fibria Celulose (10/12/2016)

Praxair Inc., Danbury, Conn., USA, through its Brazilian subsidiary White Martins, has signed a long-term agreement expanding its supply of oxygen to Fibria Celulose S/A in Três Lagoas, Brazil. Fibria is the world’s largest producer of eucalyptus pulp, exporting the product to customers in more than 40 countries.

DeZURIK Pump Control Valve Interface Protects Systems from Pressure Surges (10/21/2016)

DeZURIK/APCO/Hilton, Sartell, Minn., USA, reports ha its new ECB-CP Pump & Control Valve Interface for solenoid controlled valves is designed to provide control between the pump and pump control valve to minimize pressure surges in the fluid handling system when the pump starts and stops. The pre-programmed controller properly sequences and controls the pump and pump control valve startup and shutdown procedure, thereby protecting the pumping system from damage due to mechanical, hydraulic, or power failure.

Grand Forks Straw Pulp Plant Construction Could Start in 2017 (8/25/2016)

According to a report this morning by the Grand Forks Herald, Grand Forks, N.D., USA, construction of a new straw pulp plant in north Grand Forks could start next year. Hua Sun, COO of North American Green Pulp, said his group is working on financing the project. He hopes to be operational after the 2017 harvest season.

Greenland Resources to Build 1.5 Million Metric TPY Pulp Mill in Nigeria (8/29/2016)

According to a report this past week by The Tide (Port Harcourt, Nigeria), a Swedish firm, Greenland Resources, says it will establish a pulp mill that would generate employment for more than 14,000 Nigerians in Cross River.
