Buckman Announces Global Price Increase (10/26/2016)

U.S. Kraft Paper Shipments Rise (9/20/2016)

Total kraft paper shipments by U.S. produces in August 2016 were 151,500 short tons, 6.6% higher than in August 2015, according to the AF&PA (Washington, D.C., USA) August 2016 Kraft Paper Report released this past week. Bleached kraft paper shipments increased from 6,700 short tons in July 2016 to 9.5 short tons in August, while unbleached kraft paper shipments increased from 126,300 short tons to 142,100 short tons.

Fila Acquires St. Cuthberts Paper Mill in U.K. (9/27/2016)

Fabbrica Italiana Lapis ed Affini S.p.A. (FILA), an Italian artistry tools company), has announced the full acquisition of St Cuthberts Holding Ltd. and its operating company (St Cuthberts). The economic value of the operation, in line with the price paid, was equal to GBP 5.4 million ($7.2 million).

Huhtamaki to Open New Manufacturing, Distribution Center in Arizona (9/19/2016)

Huhtamaki North America, De Soto, Kansas, USA, this week announced plans to open a new manufacturing and distribution center in Goodyear, Ariz., to serve west coast foodservice packaging and retail tableware markets. When completed, the 750,000-sq.-ft. facility will produce paper drink cups, insulated hot cups, food containers, pressed paperboard plates, and thermoformed plastic cups and lids.

Ten Toscotec Tissue Machines Now Running at Vinda’s Sanjiang Mill in China (9/06/2016)

Vinda Paper (China) Co., at its Sanjiang mill, Jiangmen, has started up two new Toscotec (Lucca, Italy) machines, TM 9 and TM 10. Both machines are AHEAD-2.0M, with a design speed of 1,800 m/min. TM 10 is the 21st machine supplied by Toscotec to Vinda.

Tembec Orders Valmet QCS for Tartas SAS in France (9/21/2016)

Tembec's (Canada) specialty dissolving pulp mill in Tartas, France, has ordered a Valmet IQ quality control system (QCS) and an expansion of its existing Valmet DNA distributed control system (DCS) for its pulp dryer. By complementing its current control system with this investment, the mill is targeting to improve process stability and reduce lost time during transition phases such as startups, breaks, and speed changes. Startup of the new QCS is scheduled for October 2016. Typically the order value of this kind of automation system deliveries is below EUR 1 million, according to Valmet.

Study Explains Strength Gap between Graphene, Carbon Fiber (10/27/2016)

Carbon fiber, a pillar of strength in materials manufacturing for decades, isn't as good as it could be, but there are ways to improve it, according to Rice University scientists. They found the polymer chains that make up a common carbon fiber are prone to misalign during manufacture, a defect the researchers compared with a faulty zipper that weakens the product.
