Developing TAPPI Standards

Standards are of the utmost importance in the pulp, paper and converting industries as they have a serious impact on business and trade. As a member, you are eligible to get involved in the process of developing new Standards for the industry.

How to Propose new Standards

Are you interested in proposing a new Standard? We encourage members to consult our complete list of subject categories for Standards below, or view the PDF list.

If you have a general idea for a Standard, you can complete the New Idea Submission Form. We will review your idea and identify the right committee or group to work on your suggestion.

If you already further along, you can send an initial draft to A Standards manager will then work with you to develop a Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) for the new Standard. This will set in motion the development and review process, which is described in the Standards Guidelines.

Fibria Starts Construction of itermodal Terminal (2/15/2017)

Fibria, Brazil, a global eucalyptus pulp producer, has started construction on an intermodal terminal located in Aparecida do Taboado, Mato Grosso do Sul, which will ship pulp produced at its new mill in Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul to the Macuco Terminal at the Port of Santos in São Paulo, from where it will be exported to clients in Asia, Europe, and the U.S.

U.S Containerboard Output up Slightly in January (2/28/2018)

Production was up 0.7% compared with January 2017, and month-over-month average daily production compared with December 2017 was 2.9 % lower. 

A.Celli to Supply New Tissue Machine to Grupo Corporativo Papelera in Mexico (2/16/2017)

A.Celli Paper, Italy, reports that it received an order confirmation from Grupo Corporativo Papelera, Mexico, for the supply of a high-speed tissue machine with a production capacity of 34,000 metric tpy (110 metric tpd). The investment is part of the Mexican Group’s growth plan that includes an important increase in production capacity.

Open Systems Inc., Minneapolis, Minn., USA, a provider of business software, has announced the release of TRAVERSE Flex-Pack. TRAVERSE Flex-Pack is an integrated accounting, distribution, and manufacturing software, designed for the flexible packaging industry.

New Report Studies Global Biodegradable SAP Market (12/16/2016)

The global biodegradable superabsorbent material market is expected to reach $190 million by 2024, according to a new report by Grand View Research, San Francisco, Calif. Significant usage of bio-based, high-performance absorption polymers in adult incontinence products, disposable diapers, and agriculture applications is likely to boost the industry growth over the forecast period. DS Smith Plc, London, U.K., a provider of corrugated and plastics packaging, supported by paper and recycling operations worldwide, this week announced the proposed acquisition of Parish Manufacturing Inc. Parish is a U.S. manufacturer and supplier of bag-in-box systems, located in Indianapolis, Ind. Parish's focus is in bag-in-box and custom packaging for different liquids for the food, beverage, water, food service, and chemical industries.

Sweeney Named VP of Operations for New Procemex N.A. Operations (12/01/2016)

Procemex Inc., Finland, a supplier of paper and pulp web monitoring and web inspection system solutions, this past week announced that it is establishing a new company in the U.S. Procemex has appointed Wesley Sweeny VP of Operations of the new company. In his new role, Sweeny will lead all aspects of Procemex’s businesses based in North America.

Hengan to Install Two Toscotec MODULO-PLUS ES Tissue Machines (12/21/2016)

Hengan Group, a leading Chinese producer of tissue and hygiene products, has ordered two Toscotec (Italy) MODULO-PLUS ES tissue machines, to be installed at its Changji mill in Xinjiang Autonomous Region.

Daio Paper Poised to Acquire Nisshinbo’s Tissue Business (2/14/2017)

According to a report this week by the Nikkei Asian Review (NAR), Daio Paper, Japan, reportedly will pay some 20 billion yen ($178 million) for Japan-based Nisshinbo Holdings' paper business, including three mills in Japan. A final decision could come as early as this week, with the deal possibly closing by the end of March, NAR added.

PPC Expands Tissue Converting Plant in Wisconsin (12/20/2016)

Precision Paper Converters, Kaukauna, Wis., USA, this past week announced a $5.8 million expansion of its facility and installation of a state-of-the-art facial tissue interfolder and cartoner. The Bretting interfolder, named “VARiUM,” is the first of its kind in North America and the patent pending technology allows for variable cutoff lengths and folded panel widths.

Mercer International to Acquire Biomass, Sawmill Assets in Germany (2/23/2017)

Mercer International Inc., Germany, this week agreed to acquire substantially all of the assets of one of Germany’s largest sawmills and a biomass power plant, near Friesau, Germany, for approximately $55.1 million plus defined working capital of approximately $9.0 million.

Burgo Completes Natural Gas Replacement of Fuel Oil at Belgium Mill (12/23/2016)

Earlier this month (December 2016), Burgo Group, Italy, announced that its integrated Burgo Ardennes mill, Belgium, concluded a large project aimed at replacing fuel oil used to power the boilers at the Virton paper mill in Belgium with natural gas.

U.S. Boxboard Output Rises in November (12/20/2016)
