Tissue 203: Converting System Analysis & Simulation Course

Tissue 203: Converting System Analysis & Simulation

Peachtree Corners (Greater Atlanta), GA, USA
Thursday, November 9, 2017

This course is intended to teach attendees the factors affecting productivity of a tissue converting line to help optimize layouts and debottleneck existing lines.

November 9, 2017

TAPPI is excited to partner with Pulsar in delivering this one-day workshops designed to help anyone working with tissue converting lines improve operations.

The TAPPI Tissue 203 - Converting System Analysis & Simulation Workshop is designed to help operators optimize layouts and minimize bottlenecks with the use of a newly developed Plant Layout Simulator (PLS) calculation software created by Pulsar.

Tissue PLSCourse instructors will use Pulsar's application, called TISSUEPLS to model various situations and demonstrate visually the impact on productivity.  You'll be taught in this workshop how to leverage the easy-to-use PLS tool for your operations, how to input your own data and define layouts, and then analyze your converting lines.

Participants will also benefit from a limited 30-day license for this simulation software, which can be useful in marketing and in production to check existing lines and define potential new products.

Click here for a 2-minute video to see what TISSUE PLS is designed to do!

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Apply the continuity principle to converting line analysis
  • Identify tissue converting system bottlenecks and how they move with changes to equipment capabilities and tissue product design (equal versus proportional speeds)
  • Understand the benefits of line speed tuning/harmonization and how to calculate speed balances
  • Utilize process simulation and modeling, and how to apply the technology to understand and improve converting operations
  • Pinpoint typical converting benchmarks on your equipment
  • Understand the application of automatic quality systems in the converting line

This workshop is ideal for:

  • Converting Line Superintendents
  • Converting Leaders
  • Converting Process Engineers
  • Design Engineers
  • Suppliers
  • Tissue Planners
  • Product Marketing Personnel

This PLS software requires only simple mathematic calculations.  No other pre-requisite for participation is required.

Come early to TAPPI for additional tissue training!

Bruce Janda is the co-founder and principal of InnovaSpec, LLC and is serving as the chair for this course.  He brings 40 years of experience in the Paper and Nonwoven industry, specializing in Tissue and Towel Processes and Products.  Bruce held positions in the Tissue industry at Georgia-Pacific, Kimberly-Clark and others with roles in Product Development, Engineering, and Manufacturing.  He worked on the supplier side at AstenJohnson as the Product Manager for TAD and Forming Fabrics in addition to leading serving as the North American Product Business Leader and Global Innovation Leader for Forming.

Bruce has extensive applications experience on World Class, high speed Tissue and TAD machines in North America and Europe both as a producer and supplier.  He had the opportunity to participate in three new tissue machine projects as process design leader, construction supervisor, and checkout/start up leader.  Bruce has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Michigan Technological University, MBA from University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh, Executive Scholar Certificate from the Kellogg School of Northwestern University, and Lean Sigma Black Belt Certification from AstenJohnson.  He has 17 US patents issued and 1 pending, all related to Tissue and papermaking.  One of his key product development projects was leadership of the eMotion® electronic towel dispenser and TAD towel from concept through manufacturing and commercialization.  This now represents a $1 billion/year sales brand for Georgia-Pacific.

Tissue 203 Instructor - MoriniPaolo Morini, Pulsar
Paolo Morini graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 1983 at Alma Mater Bologna University. Since 1983, he has been working as design and development engineer in the automation and robotics industry. During his career, Paolo held roles in the Automation Division for Cefla Spa, where he designed special plants for automated assembly of parts/assemblies by mean of standard mechanical automation and robotics setup. Since 1991, as self-employed professional, he held positions in Engineering Departments and elaborate calculation system for assembly station for automotive components for FIAT and Marelli Autotronic.

Since 1990, he collaborate with Pulsar in the Engineering Department as Special Project Manager, elaborating tailor-made projects and prototypes. On behalf of Pulsar, he followed many different projects within the tissue industry, he elaborated calculation system for bevel gear unit, designed the screw jacks and fast bag-filler MBU30, developed the mathematical model on which Pulsar Harmonizer is based on, the mathematical model of the PLS web, analysis of simulation software. Furthermore, Paolo is the team leader of the simulating system and inspecting machines projects. Additionally, he is the official trainer for employees and customers for the previously mentioned topics.

Daniel Egoavil, PulsarDaniel Egoavil
Daniel Egoavil serves as a Special Project Developer for Pulsar.  He graduated in Engineering-Computer and Automation with focus on Automation Systems at Ferrara University. He completed a five-months internship program in Design and Development of Home and Building Automation System, which consisted of design and development of an interface between KNX System and PLC Logo Siemens, developed with Visual Basic Express. Furthermore, he completed a seven-months internship program in Wind Energy Fault Analyst, which consisted in studying and developing the analysis of the dynamic operation of a wind farm in Oland, collecting data in Matlab for the subsequent development of a diagnosis of faults. Later, Daniel, as Local Committee President of AIESEC Italia, led the Local Committee, together with an executive board of three talented individuals, to an alignment with global and national directions, bringing health to the association's finances. As a post-doc researcher for Perini Spa, he focused on fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control in mechatronic machines.
