Alternative “green” lime kiln fuels: Part I—Pulping/recovery byproducts, TAPPI Journal May 2020
ABSTRACT: This paper is the first of a two-part series on “green” lime kiln fuels. The first part of this work reviews the use of pulp mill and recovery byproducts as either full or partial replacement of oil or natural gas in the kiln. The second part reviews the use of various forms of woody biomass, bio-oils, gasification, and hydrogen as potential carbon neutral or carbon-free lime kiln fuels.

Guest Editorial: Research and development in the post COVID-19 era, TAPPI Journal June 2021
Science and technology occupy prominent roles in solving global problems. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the importance of science regarding decision-making, saving lives, and safeguarding the environment. While information technology (IT) and IT-based tools have garnered much needed attention in the past few decades, other areas such as manufacturing engineering, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals are finding their right places in gaining public and political support and attention--thanks to COVID-19! Such public attention has highlighted vulnerabilities due to lack of investments in manufacturing and materials engineering, as well as the need for strategic investments in these areas.

From biorefineries to bioproducts: conversion of pretreated pulp from biorefining streams to lignocellullose nanofibers, TAPPI Journal April 2019
ABSTRACT: This study investigates the use of pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis side streams and conver-sion to lignocellulose nanofibers. We used a steam-exploded and partial enzymatic hydrolyzed hardwood pulp and an organosolv pretreated softwood pulp to prepare lignocellulose nanofibers (LCNF) via microfluidization. The ener-gies applied on fibrillation were estimated to examine the energy consumption levels of LCNF production. The ener-gy consumptions of the fibrillation processes of the hardwood LCNF production and the softwood LCNF production were about 7040-14080 kWh/ton and 4640 kWh/ton on a dry material basis, respectively. The morphology and dimension of developed hardwood and softwood LCNFs and the stability and rheological behavior of their suspen-sions were investigated and are discussed.

Editorial: Foam forming: Technology of many opportunities, TAPPI JOURNAL August 2019
ABSTRACT: Over the past ten years, the forest sector has faced big changes due to the decreased demand of printing papers and the fast growth in packaging and tissue products. Weekly news on the marine waste problem and global warming have raised public awareness and stimulated increased interest in bio-based materials, chemicals, and fuels.

Evaluating hardness and the S-test, TAPPI Journal March 2019
ABSTRACT: The corrugated industry typically quantifies crush resistance using the Concora corrugated medium test (CMT) on fluted medium or flat crush on combined board. These tests compress the materials until the point of complete failure of the flutes. Combined board elastically resists crushing forces until a certain point, the hardness of the structure, while additional load causes permanent damage and deformation. This study investigates how hardness can be measured directly from a load curve collected during CMT (or flat crush) testing and how it varies throughout the North American paper supply. It also explores how hardness corre-lates with the values obtained from the newly developed S-test. This new test method deserves further study as a potentially more appropriate specification for crush resistance of corrugated medium.
