OUT OF THE BOX
SCA Containerboard, Diegem, Belgium, reports
that it received more than 1,200 entries from throughout Europe in its Creative
Challenge for children event, held in connection with development of the
company's presentation liners. A selection of hundreds of drawings by the
young artists were displayed recently in Berlin as part of the SCA Containerboard
Impressions event. SCA explains that the presentation liners are "the perfect paper to draw and color on, and it asked the children of its customers all over Europe to help illustrate this, using a variety of media and images. The unifying theme of the challenge was a celebration of friendship. Entries were grouped
by Western Europe region, Middle Europe region, Nordic region, Southern
Europe region, and United Kingdom region. All participants in the competition
received a gift, but three special winners (in different age groups) from
each market region are receiving a special prize to be shared with their
schoolmates for an educational initiative. The full Gallery
of Winners can be viewed on SCA's website.CARAUSTAR INDUSTRIES, Atlanta, Ga., USA, has consolidated two of its operations in Saginaw, Mich., into one new facility there, located at 3265 Commerce Centre. The two older facilities were turn-of-the-century, multi-storied buildings and were not designed for efficient manufacturing operations, the company notes. The new facility provides more streamlined operations while reducing work in process and materials handling costs. The consolidation, Caraustar says, continues its cost reduction strategy in geographic markets while ensuring long-term sustainability and competitiveness. The new facility allows for better and more efficient layout of machinery and processes. As a result, Caraustar explains that it will dispose of redundant assets, eliminate certain annual fixed costs, improve productivity, reduce direct labor costs, and increase its ability to focus on new product development. Caraustar serves the four principal recycled boxboard product end-use markets: tubes and cores, folding cartons, gypsum facing paper, and specialty paperboard products. IN OTHER CARAUSTAR NEWS, the company, together with Domtar (Montreal, Que., Canada) recently celebrated the tenth year of a paper recycling partnership with 14 area schools in Texas and Arkansas by presenting a check totaling $105,211 to be shared among the participating schools. The dollar amount reflects school-based collections of 824 tons of recyclable paper and board during the past 12 months, an increase of 100 tons over last year. A team-based approach, Domtar provides each school with a 30-yard recycling bin and includes the school in its area-wide paper donation program, which provides a steady stream of fiber. Caraustar services each bin and utilizes the fiber to manufacture recycled paper products, such as paper cores that it supplies to Domtar. Funds awarded to the participating schools benefit educational programs including science, math, technology, and environmental. ESKOARTWORK, Vandalia, Ohio, USA, has formed a partnership with Clemson University's Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design & Graphics to create the EskoArtwork Packaging Supply Chain Laboratory. The lab will focus on combining synergies of packaging design and graphic communications into the overall production and distribution manufacturing process. The Harris A. Smith Building, currently under construction on Clemson's South Carolina campus, will be the new home for the Sonoco Institute. The Packaging Supply Chain Laboratory will work inside the Sonoco Institute to provide resources for students to become a skilled and creative work force of the 21st century, house the only R&D center of its kind in the nation, recruit, hire, and maintain the top packaging design and graphics researchers in the world, and promote and stimulate technologies that can make the highest impact on the future of global environmental responsibility. FBA (Fibre Box Association) will hold its 2009 Annual Meeting March 30 - April 1, at the Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington, D.C., USA. For more information about this event, contact Sharlene Huske, 847-364-9606, email: shuske@fiberbox.org. More information about the venue is available on the hotel's website. ICCA (International Corrugated Case Association) and WCO (World Containerboard Organization) will conduct the 2009 Global Corrugated Containerboard Summit in Tokyo, Japan, April 20 - 23. The event, to be held at the Imperial Hotel, will focus on the coming decade and how to "be the best competitor you can be in order to thrive." More information and registration details are available on the Summit website. KARTONSAN KARTON has completed the upgrade of BM 1 board machine at its mill in Izmit, Turkey. The drying section of BM 1 was rebuilt by Andritz, beginning this past August, with the goal of reducing energy consumption. BM 1 produces WLC (white lined chipboard), with a grade range between 300 and 450 g/m˛, and a working width of 2,200 mm. Andritz supplied a new canopy hood with supply and exhaust air system, optimized blow boxes for pocket ventilation, and a heat recovery system. Since startup after the upgrade, steam consumption of BM 1 has decreased by 10%, as planned, according to Haluk Iber, assistant GM at Kartonsan. MEADWESTVACO CORP. (MWV), Richmond, Va., USA, will discontinue operations at its MWV Packaging plant in Grover, N.C., by early 2009, in an effort to streamline costs and improve operating efficiencies. The facility produces packaging for the media and entertainment industry. Some production at Grover will transfer to other MWV packaging plants, and the company notes that its capacity to supply these products will not be affected. Closure of the Grover plant will affect some 120 hourly and salaried employees, who will be eligible for separation benefits in accordance with company policy. The company will be working with the North Carolina Rapid Response Team to provide assistance and support. "The decision to close the Grover facility was a difficult but necessary one," said Steve Scherger, president of Beverage and Media Packaging, MWV. "In today's challenging economy, we must focus on managing the cost elements that we can directly control. This includes carefully studying our operational footprint to determine how we can create greater efficiencies that will strengthen our presence in the marketplace." MONDI, Johannesburg, South Africa-based containerboard producer, reports that it has signed a land restitution settlement that will transfer more than 4,000 hectares of company land to the South African Kranskop communities of AmaHlongwa and AmaBomvu. The deal titles the land to the communities, which then lease it back to Mondi under a 20-year agreement that continues supply of timber to Mondi's mills. According to the agreement, the land and some immovable properties on it will be bought from Mondi by the Regional Land Claims Commission (RLCC) and/or the communities at a value of approximately R20.5 million. A settlement agreement signed by all three parties spells out the terms and governance of the relationship. The land will be owned by the two communities through the Siyathokoza and Eyethu Trusts. This is South Africa's first forestry related land restitution settlement agreement involving a corporate land owner. PUMP SYSTEMS MATTER (PSM) and the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Industrial Technologies Program are hosting free audio web briefings on how "Pump Systems Performance Impacts Multiple Bottom Lines." The 40-min sessions will be conducted on: Friday, December 12, at 11:00 a.m. EST and Monday, January 19, at 11:00 a.m. EST. Presenter Mike Pemberton of ITT Industrial Process, who has helped many industrial facilities save significant energy and other operating costs, notes that improved pump systems performance can lower maintenance costs and improve system reliability for better asset management, thereby improving a company's bottom line while helping cleanup the environment. With today's volatile economic conditions, he adds, finding ways to save money and improve operations is more important than ever. According to Pemberton, DOE studies show that nearly 25% of industrial electricity demand comes from industrial motor systems, more than 50% of pump life cycle costs result from energy and maintenance expense, less than 15% of pump life cycle costs are initial purchase costs, and energy savings of 20% or more are possible with systems optimization. Registration is required for the web briefings. SONOCO, Hartsville, S.C., USA, has named Jim Bowen senior VP, Sonoco Recycling and Internal Supply, effective immediately. Bowen will focus on expanding Sonoco Recycling's business through market development, acquisitions, and new services offerings. Sonoco Recycling collects and processes recyclable materials through 46 locations in North America, including a fleet of trucks and 1,300 trailers. He will also have responsibility for the company's internal supply businesses including the Adhesives, Machinery Manufacturing, and Forest Products divisions. Bowen has been senior VP since 2002, holding various senior management positions. Prior to that, he served as VP and GM, Paper; division VP, manufacturing, Paper North America; and director of manufacturing. He joined the company in 1972. STORA ENSO, Helsinki, Finland, will close down its Baienfurt Mill in Germany as well as PM 3 at its Kabel Mill, also in Germany, by the end of this year. The company had announced in September that it was considering a shutdown of the 190,000 metric tpy folding boxboard machine at Baienfurt. The shutdown of Baienfurt does not include the facility's sheeting service center. The mill has 391 employees, of whom about 40 will continue to work at the sheeting service center. Stora Enso says the shutdowns are due to persistent profitability problems caused by European overcapacity, the strength of the euro, and cost increases, especially for wood and energy. The company will seek parties to develop the Baienfurt site for industrial use other than board production. ![]() IN OTHER STORA ENSO NEWS, the company reports that it is investing EUR 137 million to build a new power plant at its Ostroleka Mill site in Poland. The Ostroleka mill produces containerboards and kraft and sack papers. The complex includes a corrugated board and boxes mill and a sack mill. The new power plant, which will be able to use multiple fuels, will improve Ostroleka Mill's energy self-sufficiency and energy efficiency, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The aim is to increase biofuel usage depending on its availability. With the new power plant, the complex will be about 65% self-sufficient in electricity and 100% in steam production. Construction of the new power plant will start immediately and should be completed in the third quarter of 2010. The mill does not currently have its own power plant. USE OF CORUGATED CASES (rather than trays) is being increased by the proliferation of flexible packaging, such as pouches, according to Italy-based Cama Group. While bottles and tins can be shipped in corrugated trays, Cama notes, flexible pouches require more substantial protection. The company added that many in the industry were looking at ways to reduce the practice of placing items into both a retail-ready case and then a transit shipper, pointing out that one option is to strengthen the retail-ready case so that an additional shipper is not required.
