ABITIBIBOWATER WORKERS in Thunder Bay, Ont., Canada, are being asked to take part in another cost-cutting exercise. The initiative is being termed a renewal process, much like the one that reduced costs and cut several hundred jobs in 2006. Recently, the company announced 1,100 temporary layoffs to be implemented at their two Thunder Bay facilities during February. Communications Energy and Paperworkers National union representative Marvin Pupeza recently met with company officials and said high electricity costs are a major obstacle to keeping the mills running. Pupeza says he's agreed to the initiative because AbitibiBowater has shown it is committed to keeping the local operations open for the long haul.

ADVERTISING REVENUES in newspapers and magazine publishing, as generally expected, were down significantly in 2008, averaging 7.8% for the year. Figures from the Publishers Information Bureau (PIB), released recently, confirm that ad revenue fell more steeply as the year progressed, dropping 13.8% in 4Q. The number of ad pages sold fell 17.1% in 4Q and 11.7% for the year. Ad page reductions were down 25.8% for 4Q and 24.3% for the year in the automotive sector. This drop was reflected, in particular, through lower ad income for men's magazines. Financial, insurance and real estate oriented publications saw revenues drop by 36.5% in 4Q and 17.3% for the year, a reflection of the stock markets' collapse. The home furnishings and supplies category, which provide a window to the housing sector, saw the number of pages fall 22.8% in 4Q and 17.9% for the year.

ALBANY INTERNATIONAL CORP., Albany, New York, USA, reports that it is considering the closure of its Finnish subsidiary, Albany International Oy. The proposal, if implemented, will affect up to 133 employees.

ARGENTINA'S GOVERNMENT, in a report issued by its National Institute of Industrial Technology, states that a Metsa-Botnia (Finland) paper plant located across the border in Uruguay doesn't pollute. Environmentalists claim it contaminates the Uruguay River, which runs between the two countries. The report states that three separate studies conducted along 62 miles (100 kms) of the river show no increase in harmful chemicals.

AUGUST KOEHLER AG of Germany, rumored to be taking over NewPage's Kimberly, Wis., USA, paper mill, can turn it into a profitable concern because of the high value paper products they would probably produce, according to independent consultant Dave Hillman. Hillman wrote recently that the mill is seen as an attractive property because of its size, location and well maintained equipment. The high cost of market pulpwood, however, made the mill uneconomical to operate in 2007/08 as pulp prices peaked around $900/admt. Industry observers agreed the mill would be viable if it had a pulp mill capable of supplying all the needed fiber. However, Hillman stated that these observers failed to take into account that, if a high value added paper grade could be developed and in large quantities, then the mill could be profitable even when pulps were high priced. August Koehler is one of the world's leading producers of zinc oxide coated thermal imaging papers, a popular grade that is growing at 7% per year and taking away business from carbonless papers. Hillman notes that other factors making the decision attractive is its timing, central location, the cost to erect a greenfield mill vs purchasing an existing facility, plus possible incentives from the State of Wisconsin. While a number of considerations must still be worked out, there is optimism that the deal will be concluded in the 1Q of 2009, with startup in 1Q of 2010. Koehler went on to add that they are still looking at other facilities and have not definitely settled on the Kimberly mill.

BOISE INC., Boise, Idaho, U.S.A., will cut more jobs at its St. Helens, Ore., USA, paper mill. In 3Q 2008, paper machines H 1 and H 4 were idled, affecting 300 workers. Plans at that time were to keep 179 people at the mill to run machines H 2 and a second machine owned by Cascades Tissue Group, a Canadian company, which has an agreement with Boise Inc. to supply the machine's workforce. A Boise spokesperson said these latest cuts further the company's objective to improve profitability as it transitions its pulp and paper operations towards the production of specialty papers, such as soup can labels and fast food wrappers.

CATALYST PAPER, Richmond, B.C., Canada, will take market related downtime at its Crofton and Elk Falls mills in British Columbia, as well as its Snowflake, Ariz., USA, mill. These actions will remove 55,000 metric ton of newsprint from production in 1Q 2009. The Crofton No. 1 paper machine will be idled February 1 and remain down until market conditions improve, affecting 50 staff members. Downtime at the Elk Falls and Snowflake mills will be aligned with order files. Also, in a move reflecting weaker pulp markets, the Crofton kraft pulp mill will prolong its planned maintenance shutdown, bringing the total curtailment to 35 days and removing 38,000 metric tons of market pulp from production in 1Q. As a result of weak paper markets, Catalyst removed 73,000 metric tons of newsprint, 27,000 metric tons of specialty printing papers, and 72,000 metric tons of pulp from production in 4Q 2008.

ENCE, Madrid, Spain, is reviewing options for its 1-million-metric-tpy Punta Pereira pulp and paper mill and energy plant in Uruguay, including partnering. The mill, which also has 140 MW of renewable energy capacity, has encountered difficulties due to the global credit crisis, as well as environmental protests. Ence is considering offers from groups in the forestry and pulp and paper sector, all of which have solid operating and financing capacities, it said in a statement to the stock market regulator.

MALAYSIA PAPER MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION (MaPMA) secretary said recently that the Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, government should provide more attractive investment incentives to local industrialists to encourage and help them set up more local paper mills in collaboration with foreign investors. About 380,000 metric tons of printing and writing paper is consumed annually in Malaysia, of which about 230,000 metric tons is imported, while the balance is supplied by Malaysia's first integrated pulp and paper mill, Sabah Forest Industries (SFI) in Sipitang, Sabah. Incentives, the secretary stated, would encourage mill partners from neighboring countries to add-on or shift their operations to Malaysia. He further declared that his government should review the duty structure to ensure consumers and paper merchants enjoyed reasonable pricing.

MEADWESTVACO, Richmond, Va., USA, said this week that it will further reduce overhead expenses to realize $100 million in savings this year, and will also close or restructure 12-14 manufacturing facilities, resulting in savings of $25 million, for a total of $125 million in pre-tax savings during 2009. In undertaking these cost-saving measures, some 2,000 jobs, or 10% of the company's global workforce, will be eliminated by year end. When added to previous strategic cost management measures begin in 2008, MWV expects to realize pre-tax savings of $250 million - $300 million by mid-2010.

M-REAL, Helsinki, Finland, has begun negotiations related to the closure of its 480 -employee Hallein, Austria, paper mill. Production is slated to cease at the end of April. Fine paper production at the company's Gohrsmühle mill in Germany will also be stopped during April and its effects reviewed. M-real had previously decided to expand production of specialty papers, uncoated fine paper reels, and folio sheets at Gohrsmühle. The combined standard coated fine paper production capacity of Hallein and Gohrsmühle is about 600,000 metric tpy.

PACKAGING CORP. OF AMERICA, Lake Forest, Ill., USA, has reported positive income for 4Q 2008, despite what Chairman & CEO, Paul T. Stecko, described as the most difficult quarter PCA has ever faced operationally. PCA's box volume was down almost 10% and mill downtime and slow-backs amounted to 90,000 tons. Containerboard inventories at year end stood at 2,000 tons below year-end 2007 levels. Even with unusually high cost inflation during the first half 2008, coupled with the economic downturn in 4Q, PCA's 2008 earnings were the second best since becoming a stand-alone company in 1999. PCA has four paper mills and 67 corrugated product plants in 26 states, making it the fifth largest producer of containerboard and corrugated packaging products in the U.S.

SFK PULP, Longueuil, Quebec, Canada, will extend the current quarter's scheduled maintenance shutdowns at its Fairmont, W. Va., USA, and Menominee, Mich., USA, recycled bleached kraft (RBK) pulp mills to balance its order book with inventory levels. The extended shutdown will remove approximately 10,000 metric tons of RBK pulp from production. SFK employs about 550 people and has a total annual production capacity of 735,000 metric tons.

STORA ENSO, Helsinki, Finland, reports that it will continue to curtail paper and board production at its Finnish mills in response to weakened demand. As part of the adjustment, Stora Enso will begin negotiations concerning temporary lay-offs in Finland. The number of staff affected could exceed 5,000. In light of this situation, the company warned that 4Q earnings would be negatively affected. In 4Q 2008, Stora Enso cut production by about 490,000 metric ton, equivalent to about 15% of the company's paper and board production capacity. In addition, pulp production was cut by about 240,000 metric tons (20% of capacity).

TISSUE SECTOR MARKETS continue to be strong, according to Industrial Info Resources (IIR), Sugar Land, Tex., USA. Several new projects are under development or near the construction phase. J. D. Irving plans to break ground this spring on a $120 million tissue machine addition at a mill in Fort Edward, N.Y. P&G's "Gold Rush" project in Utah is under construction and has several major contractor bid packages left to be awarded. Moreover, the company has already started planning for a second machine at the Bear River site. In Mexico, a $240 million greenfield tissue mill is the only project identified for the period ending August 31, 2009.

U.K. PRODUCERS OF WOODFREE COATED PAPER are starting to implement price hikes announced at the end of 2008. The rapid loss in the pound's value against the euro alone was reason enough for them to take this step, producers pointed out. Paper had been delivered at higher prices in the second half of January, although some suppliers had lost a couple of orders after the price increases. Demand for woodfree coated paper in the U.K. remained rather weak on the whole.

VIETNAM PAPER CORP., Hanoi, Vietnam, believes it will achieve revenue of about $358 million in 2009, according to Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade. In 2008, VPC took in about $333 million, representing 100% of their target, and 124% over 2007. To achieve their goal, VPC will focus on market promotion, especially the expansion of exports, as well as product diversification, proper pricing, and better forecasting. According to the corporation, export growth will be achieved through greater emphasis on trademark and product advertising, as well as penetrating directly into importers' distribution systems.

VOTORANTIM CELULOSE E PAPEL (VCP), Sao Paulo, Brazil, will increase its stake in Aracruz Celulose to 56% after it acquires a further 28.03% stake in that company for 2.71 billion reais ($1.16 billion), as part of a plan to merge the two companies. The share acquisition process was suspended in September 2008 after Brazilian-based pulp producer Aracruz reported losses with foreign exchange derivatives and its CFO resigned.

IN RELATED NEWS, Aracruz has announced plans to resume expansion of its Guaíba unit in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, starting in the first half of 2011. Metso reportedly has already done work for this pulp project.

YANZHOU HUAMAO PAPER INDUSTRY CO., member of Sun Paper Group, in Yanzhou City in Shandong Province, China, has ordered a new fine paper machine from Metso Paper. Startup is scheduled for 1Q 2010. The delivery will include a complete paper machine from headbox to reel, with related automation systems. Metso said that certain innovations in the machine will enable it to produce top quality printing paper grades with excellent bulk and stiffness properties.

IN RELATED NEWS, Metso reports that it has begun negotiations regarding employee reductions at its operations in Finland. A total of 900 - 1,200 staff members are affected. The possible reduction in the number of operating units and the consolidation of operations into bigger units will be examined as part of the negotiations. The preliminarily planned employee reductions are due to the need to adjust production capacity to correspond with what Metso sees as permanently decreased machine and equipment demand in the pulp and paper industry. Further, it was announced that the company plans to cut some 70 jobs at its Paper and Fiber Technology units in the U.S. and Canada.

Paper News

KADANT GRANTEK, a subsidiary of Westford, Mass., USA-based Kadant Inc., is offering "an environmentally friendly" use for recycled paper. The company's Gran-sorb fiber-based absorbent is made from 100% recycled post-consumer paper waste and is used for spill cleanup, liquid stabilization, bioremediation, and site remediation, among other uses. The company says it absorbs oils, solvents, lubricants, coolants, water, and most non-aggressive liquids on contact. Kadant states that clay-based absorbents are dusty, dirty, have relatively low absorption rates, and present respiratory drawbacks, whereas Gran-sorb is dust- and silica-free, leaves no stains, cleans up quickly, has low ash content, and is safe for disposal by incineration. Because Gran-sorb is created using fibrous sludge waste from select paper mills, Kadant says it is safe for both the environment and employee use.

Travels With Larry

Building a Homestead
Q: What do Flint, Michigan; Burton, Michigan; Roswell, Georgia; the NFL; and my hometown of Memphis, Tennessee all have in common?
A: Some very good corrugated packaging.

Last month TAPPI's David Bell and I had the opportunity to visit with six key players from Compak-Webcor Packaging Corp.-CW South Corp., a three-part company with headquarters in Flint, Michigan. They are a working example of how knowledge and networking help our industry on a regular basis. This marriage is a "perfect union" of people coming together to meet the needs of a common customer.

This team represents more than 40 years of experience in the U.S. mini flute market. The two Michigan plants, founded by Bill Martin and Jack Goggins in Flint and Burton, were started to service the needs of GM's parts business. They focused on E, B, and F flutes for small boxes. At one time, these plants were Alton's largest sheet customer. As the auto business began to fall off, plant management sought more customers outside of Michigan. Business continued to grow, and both Michigan plants were running three full shifts. One of their customers had a need down south, so the CW Packaging team went on the lookout for someone to partner with in that local market. Armed with a five-year commitment from the customer, CW South was born.

Entrepreneur sprit
Late last year, business partners and former NFL players Sean Vanhorse (executive vice president, Homestead Packaging Solutions) and Adam Walker (president and CEO of Homestead Packaging Solutions) turned out to be the last piece of the puzzle for CW South. Vanhorse and Walker already owned two businesses in the Atlanta area: Homestead Settlement Solutions and a water-pump distribution company called Homestead Performance. CW South supplied the packaging for the water pumps. Just as CW South was looking for ways to grow its business, Homestead wanted to expand its own businesses, and the joint venture Homestead Packaging Solutions was formed. Headquartered in Roswell, Georgia, the Homestead Holdings Group owns 51% and CW South owns 49% of the new joint venture.

Because of their patented web-fed corrugated process, Homestead can corrugate, print on both the inside (fully registered) and outside liners, and die cut in one pass on its 350-foot production line.

International reach
Over the past five or six years, the company has developed business in China and India. The partners they choose can make boxes that look the same overseas as they do in the U.S. They manufacture boxes for companies around the globe including Affinia, General Electric, Kimberly Clark, Honeywell Parts Plus, Hytec Automotive, and ASIN World Corp., a Fortune 500 company that supplies Toyota and other automakers.

I know I did not do these folks justice with these few words. They are truly a breath of fresh air in an industry that constantly needs to think inside and outside the box. You can learn more about these folks at www.comwebinc.com.

And while you're at it, stop by www.tappi.org and become a TAPPI member, if you have not already joined. I appreciate your support.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

--Michelle Obama, American First Lady
