FROM THE WIRE

PAPER IS GREENER THAN COMPUTERS, according to a new International Paper Co. (Memphis, Tenn., USA) brochure that is part of its Down to Earth environmental series. Titled "Pixels vs. Paper: Are pixels greener than paper?" the report takes the stance that paper is friendlier to the environment than electronic devices. Some of IP's key findings in the comparison between paper and computers include:
  • The amount of electricity to run a computer for only five months could produce enough paper for the average person to use for an entire year
  • 20% less CO2 is used per year by a person reading a daily printed newspaper versus a person reading web-based news for 30 min a day
  • Paper is biodegradable and nearly 60% of all paper in the U.S. is recycled
  • Only 18% of all electronic devices are currently recycled and e-waste constitutes the single largest waste export in the U.S.
  • Paper comes from a renewable and sustainable source, trees, while electronic devices are typically made of plastics and other non-renewable resources and chemicals and metals. IP says every day the paper and forest products industry plants more than three times the number of trees than are harvested.

THIS WEEK'S MARKET ROUNDUP
A FALLING U.S. DOLLAR, according to Mark Wilde, senior analyst at Deutsche Bank, could prove to be a sleeper issue in the second half of 2009. Continuing his analysis reported in last week's Over the Wire, Wilde notes that a weaker dollar could help support U.S. dollar-based pulp and paper pricing and could have a positive impact on trade flows. For packaging companies, it's more of a translation issue, boosting the dollar value of offshore earnings. Wilde believes segments with the greatest sensitivity include pulp, containerboard, and newsprint.

MEANWHILE, U.S. 2Q/09 WOOD FIBER PRICES fell 5%-8% for the fourth consecutive quarter, with the largest declines in the Northeast and Western states. In the U.S. South, which is the biggest wood fiber consumer in the world, pulp mills have only experienced minor downward price adjustments in recent months, according to the most recent issue of the North American Wood Fiber Review (WFR), Seattle, Wash. WFR notes that prices for wood chips and pulpwood in the U.S. have not fallen as much as they would have without the black liquor tax credit, which its says has provided "a timely injection" to the U.S. pulp and paper industry and has changed how many pulp mills have been running their plants the past six months. "Without a doubt, many paper companies would have reduced their production of pulp this year had it not been for the black liquor tax credit," WFR says, adding that "as a consequence of such circumstances, there would have been less demand for wood raw material and wood fiber prices probably would have been lower in most regions of the U.S. than they actually are. Since late 2008, chemical pulp producing mills in the U.S. started to take advantage of the credit that is worth $150 - 200 per ton of pulp, WFR adds, pointing out that these additional funds, which have an estimated value of $3 billion - $8 billion in 2009, "have been particularly helpful this year because many mills have been running with very low, if any, profit margins." More information is available on the WFR website.

ABITIBIBOWATER, Montreal, Que., Canada, has appointed Bruce Robertson as chief restructuring officer. Robertson's primary responsibility will be to support company efforts in the restructuring process stemming from AbitibiBowater's creditor protection filings. He will work closely with the Executive Team and report to David Paterson, president and CEO. Robertson recently served as senior managing partner at Brookfield Asset Management Inc. At Brookfield, he held a number of operational roles, managing more than $7 billion in North American distressed private equity, bridge lending, and real estate finance strategies. In his capacity as a senior executive of Brookfield, Robertson served on a number of private and public boards.

BORALEX POWER INCOME FUND, Montreal, Que., Canada, reports that AbitibiBowater has cancelled several contracts that affect the Fund's Dolbeau cogeneration plant and Senneterre power station. The contracts involved are the service and maintenance contracts for Dolbeau, which has been operated by Abitibi since the Fund acquired the plant in January 1999. The cancellation notices also include five biomass supply contracts for Dolbeau, the contract to sell steam to the Dolbeau pulp and paper mill owned by Abitibi, and a biomass supply contract for Senneterre. Abitibi reportedly is cancelling the contracts in accordance with an order issued by the Quebec Superior Court this past April, following its filing for protection from creditors under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act of Canada. Under the biomass supply contracts, the Dolbeau cogeneration plant owned by the Fund should receive approximately 90% of its biomass fuel from the Abitibi sawmills. In recent months, talks have been held between the Fund and Abitibi to discuss ways to decrease the operating costs of the Abitibi mill. Discussions have not resumed since the order on April 17. Since that date, the Fund notes that Abitibi has failed to fulfill its supply contracts obligations.

GREEN ENERGY RESOURCES, New York, N.Y., USA, reports that it has received two separate orders totaling 20,000 tons of wood pellets valued at $28 million dollars over 12 months. The order is expected to commence late in 2009 and extend throughout 2010. The wood pellets are used in co-firing with coal to reduce green house gas emissions. The company announced in June that it had signed a 10-year U.S. domestic biomass supply contract valued at more than $300 million dollars.

Richmond Times-Dispatch Photo
MEADWESTVACO's new headquarters building in downtown Richmond, Va., USA, is nearing a fall completion. According to a report in today's Richmond Times-Dispatch, the new nine-story building overlooking the James River will be ready for occupancy (some 600 employees) late this year. The move will be made in stages, according to company spokesperson Alison von Puschendorf, with some moving in December and some in early 2010. The building is being constructed as a "green" or environmentally-friendly project. For example, terrazzo floors in the building are made from recycled material. Some 95% of the construction debris has been recycled, and the building will use natural lighting to reduce energy consumption, according to the news report.

PHI GROUP, Huntington Beach, Calif., USA, a mergers and acquisitions company, reports that it has agreed on behalf of Asean Pulp and Paper Corp., a U.K. corporation, to acquire a majority interest in Phuong Nam Pulp Co., a subsidiary of Transport and Communication Development and Investment Co. (TRACODI) that manages Phuong Nam Pulp Mill in Long An Province, near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Asean Pulp and Paper will contribute a minimum of $15 million in equity and a portion in debt financing to Phuong Nam and will hold a minimum 51% stake in this company. Investments in the Phuong Nam Pulp Mill total approximately $180 million, of which more than $132 million has come from Societe General, France, Petro Vietnam Finance Corp., Bank of Investment and Development of Vietnam, and Vietcom Bank. Phuong Nam expects to generate $100 million-plus in revenue per year when running at full capacity. The mill produces bleached pulp from kenaf and other softwoods using PR-CAPMP (Pre-Conditioning Alkaline Peroxide Mechanical Pulping) technology.

PROCTER & GAMBLE, Cincinnati, Ohio, has appointed Robert McDonald its new president and CEO, effective immediately. A.G. Lafley is moving full-time into the role of chairman of P&G's board of directors after serving as CEO from 2000 to 2009. McDonald joined Procter & Gamble in 1980 and has worked with Lafley as an integral member of P&G's leadership team for nearly a decade, and has nearly 30 years of brand management, market development, global business unit , and global operations leadership experience across the company and throughout the world. He spent most of the 1990s leading P&G's businesses in the Philippines, Japan, and Korea.

100% RECYCLED PAPERBOARD ALLIANCE, Washington, D.C., USA, reports that it had a record number of new licensees in the first six months of this year. Through June 30, 18 U.S. brand owners signed a license agreement with the RPA-100% granting them the right to display the RPA-100% symbol on their packaging. In making the announcement, Paul Schutes, executive director, commented that "this puts our organization on a pace to add 40 new licensees by the close of 2009, exceeding any previous year's total new licensees and exceeding our goal for this year." The new licensees, which include companies such as Harland Check, Nestle' Purina Petcare, and Snyder's of Hanover, are using 100% recycled paperboard to package organic foods, pet food, snacks, office supplies, and even to manufacture coffee cup insulating sleeves. Currently more than 150 companies have signed licensing agreements to display the symbol and be RPA-100% partners. More information on licensing the symbol is available on the RPA-100% website.

TETRA PAK, Lausanne, Switzerland, today inaugurated its new packaging material plant in Hohhot, Northern China, which operates completely on power from renewable resources, often referred to as "green electricity." The company invested EUR 60 million to build the plant, its most advanced aseptic carton manufacturing facility worldwide, bringing its total investment in China to EUR 250 million, with a total capacity of approximately 50 billion packs a year in its four plants in that country. The Hohhot facility is the first manufacturing plant in Inner Mongolia and among the first in China to exclusively use green electricity. The plant consumes an estimated 20 million kwh of green power annually, which corresponds to an estimated saving of 16,000 metric tons of CO2 per year. The green electricity supplied to Tetra Pak comes primarily from wind power.

USW (the United Steelworkers), Pittsburgh, Pa., USA, this past week reported that members of USW Local 8-675 in Covington, Va., have voted in favor of a proposed new contract with MeadWestvaco. The new agreement includes $2,600 in cash bonuses and more than 16% in general wage increases during its six-year term. Improvements to the defined benefit pension plan raise the multiplier to $58 per month for each year of service, meaning that an employee who retires with 30 years of service would receive a monthly benefit of roughly $1,740 per month, a high-water mark for workers in the paper industry. USW International VP Jon Geenen, the union's top official with responsibility for paper bargaining, said that this groundbreaking new agreement will raise the bar for the entire industry.

WEYERHAEUSER CO., Federal Way, Wash., USA, is permanently closing its iLevel lumber mill near Taylor, La., effective immediately. The announcement will affect approximately 39 employees at the site. The Tree Improvement Center and the Timberlands office will remain open and continue to operate in Bienville Parish near the Taylor community. The company notes that the closure is related to the continuing decline in demand for wood products due to a slowdown in the housing market. The company continues to employ some 924 employees in Louisiana, and owns and manages more than one million acres of timber in the state.

ZHANJIANG CHENMING PULP & PAPER CO (ZCP&P) will install the world's largest fine paper production line at its greenfield pulp and paper mill in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province, China. paper news

BILLERUD, Stockholm, Sweden, recently launched Pure Board, a white board made exclusively of primary fiber to meet strict hygiene requirements in paper packaging for drinks and liquid food. Used to make paper cups, paper plates, lunch boxes, and products that come into direct contact with cooked meals and drinks, Pure Board is available in different PE coatings on one or two sides, which ensures a reliable liquid barrier. The exclusive use of primary fiber produces a pure material better suited to contact with food than paper based on recycled fiber, according to Billerud. The new product is being produced at the company's Gruvön mill in Sweden, which in addition to being FSC and PEFC certified, also has BRC/IoP hygiene certification.

published price increases

BASF, Charlotte, N.C., USA, is increasing prices for all of its Styrofan and Styronal styrene-butadiene latex products by up to $0.10 per dry pound in the U.S. and Canada, effective August 1. The company said the increases are a due to higher prices of raw materials, in particular styrene and butadiene, coupled with freight-related fuel surcharges and manufacturing energy requirements.

New issue of JEFF Journal now posted
The Journal of Engineered Fibers and Fabrics (JEFF) online technical publication has posted its summer issue [www.jeffjournal.org]. JEFF is published by the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry (INDA), and is co-sponsored by TAPPI, The Fiber Society and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC).

According to INDA Technical Director Steve Ogle, circulation on the online technical journal is at an all-time high of more than 9,000 visits per month. This is a significant increase in readership in just the third year of online publication. JEFF publishes original, peer-reviewed research on all aspects of fiber and fabric technologies.

Ogle also reports that author interest in publishing in JEFF has increased significantly in the past year. "We are receiving manuscript submission rates at three times the volume over last year," Ogle says. "We have added an early view feature that allows readers to see what is coming in future issues, allows for improved promotion of coming issues and gives authors more exposure time."

Another key factor in the continued success of JEFF and its acceptance in the global technical community is the official accreditation by Thomson Reuters which has allowed it to take its place among other peer-reviewed technical journals as an officially recognized source for significant research in its field.
