FROM THE WIRE ALBERTA CONFERENCE REVEALS GROWING ENTHUSIAM FOR NANOTECHNOLOGY IN FOREST PRODUCTS COMMUNITY. More than 180 nanoscience experts from 12 countries met in June to discuss the potential of nano-enabled biomaterials. Held in Edmonton, AB, Canada, and co-sponsored by TAPPI and the Alberta Ingenuity Fund, the conference revealed developments for revolutionizing paper and wood products, as well as capturing sustainability-focused markets with bionanocomposites and capitalizing on wood-derived nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) and nanofibrillar cellulose (NFC). "The hot topic was NCC-NFC, with people talking about the benefits in increasing paper performance," said Phil Jones, a conference chairperson and director of new business development and new ventures at Imerys. "The rapidly increasing rate of spending in this area is impressive." ![]() (l-r) George Weyerhaeuser, Houghton Cascade, Bruno Marcoccia, Domtar Industries, Al Ward, Alberta Pacific Forest Industries (Alpac) Conference attendees learned that Japan, Finland, and Canada in particular are escalating research funding in the area of NCC-NFC production. Attendees also heard about health, safety, and legal issues surrounding nanoscience from multidisciplinary experts in industry and academia. Among the paper companies benefiting from this information as panelists and attendees were SAPPI Fine Paper, SCA, Smart Papers, Stora Enso, Verso Paper, Domtar, Mondi, Kruger, Nippon Paper, AbitibiBowater, and Alpac. "The conference provided a clear comparison of all current nanocellulose fiber work," said Steven Masia, research scientist for Sappi Fine Paper NA. "It also offered insights into new nanoscale measurement techniques that are invaluable for development of products with improved performance. The conference offered information on new nanobiological technologies, and I made several contacts that are interested in evaluating projects of mutual interest." ![]() Stanislav Stoyanov (l), NINT, discusses poster "Multiscale Modeling Methods for Development of Modified Materials Based on Nanocrystalline Cellulose"The conference reinforced the fact that companies, both within and outside of the forest products industry, have only scratched the surface of what is possible with NCC and NFC. "Most researchers in nanotechnology are unaware of the rich opportunities that NCC offers with regards to advanced materials," said Martin Moskovits, a nanotechnology expert and CTO for API Nanotronics. With the success of this conference and the building enthusiasm for nanotechnology applications, plans are underway for TAPPI's 5th International Conference on Nanotechnology for the Forest Products Industry, to be held next year in Helsinki, Finland. THIS WEEK'S MARKET ROUNDUP PACKAGING markets for virtually all niches have held stable in July, while prices for newsprint and coated paper fell sharply, reports Mark Wilde, senior analyst at Deutsche Bank. Domestic prices for containerboard were flat for the second month in a row, but most other paperboard grades were stable, he notes. COATED PAPER markets may be reaching an inflection point, Wilde continues, adding that "we are picking-up some hints that the market may be bottoming. Some sources in the merchant community report a recent pick-up in customer inquiries for LWC. With relatively lean inventories in many markets, one merchant noted that a sharp snap-back in the market would not be surprising." MARKET PULP prices continue to rally, according to Wilde, rising in July for the second month in a row. With a sharp decline in worldwide inventories, extensive downtime and closures, and continued strong demand in China, pulp producers have announced price hikes across all regions. Rising list prices are only part of the story, Wilde points out. Brokers are also reporting that the discounts from "list" on spot sales are shrinking dramatically. APPLETON, Appleton, Wis., USA, reports that it is exploring options to sell C&H Packaging Co., a wholly-owned subsidiary the company acquired in April 2003. C&H Packaging is located in Merrill, Wis., and prints and converts flexible plastic packaging materials for companies in the food processing, household, and industrial products industries. It employs approximately 100 people. The company is evaluating the impact that a sale of C&H Packaging would have on its financial statements. Such impact could be material, Appleton notes, adding that it can offer no assurances that a transaction will occur or, if one is undertaken, its terms or timing. The company pointed out that it will provide no additional public comment about the progress or developments of this process unless its board of directors enters into a definitive sales agreement with a potential buyer. Appleton CEO Mark Richards said that Appleton intends to focus its performance packaging operations on film production. The company's film-producing facilities include American Plastics in Rhinelander, Wis., and New England Extrusion in Turners Falls, Mass., and Milton, Wis. ![]() Bellerud's Flute to be used in Rigesa's produce boxes BILLERUD, Stockholm, Sweden, has signed a partnership agreement with Rigesa, a producer of corrugated boxes for fruit and vegetables in Brazil and India. According to the agreement, Rigesa will produce corrugated boxes with Billerud Flute (produced at the company's Gruvön mill in Sweden). Billerud thus gains access to the rapidly-expanding Brazilian and Indian fruit and vegetable markets. The partnership, which creates opportunities to grow together with Rigesa in expanding markets, is part of Billerud's strategy to advance higher up the value chain and create a global standard for fruit and vegetable packaging. Full-scale production at Rigesa will start this month. CANFOR PULP INCOME FUND, Vancouver, B.C., Canada, announced this week that Paul Richards, president and CEO of Canfor Pulp Limited Partnership (CPLP), will retire at the Fund's next annual general meeting of unit holders, currently scheduled for April 27, 2010. Charles Jago, chairman of CPLP, noted that "Paul has decided that after more than 38 years in the business he will retire to spend more time with his family. We are pleased that he will continue to lead CPLP up to the annual general meeting and the entire board is appreciative of his continued contribution, guidance, and leadership through these difficult economic times." A search committee of the board will find a replacement for Richards. ENERGY OPPORTUNITIES IN THE N.A. PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY, a new market report available from TAPPI and BDA (Business Development Advisory), examines:

QUEBECOR WORLD emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this past week under the new, or old, name (depending on perspective) of World Color Press. In the late 1990s, World Color Press and Quebecor Printing merged to form Quebecor World. The new World Color Press is owned mainly by Quebecor World's former lenders and creditors. The largest stockholders are the Société Générale bank of Montreal and Catalyst Fund Ltd. of Toronto. S.A. INDUSTRIAS CELULOSA ARAGONESA (SAICA), Spain's largest paper producer and paper recycler, will install a new waste-to-energy power plant at its Zaragoza mill in Spain. Startup of the EUR 50 million (approximately) plant, to be supplied by Metso Corp., is scheduled for the third quarter of 2011. The power boiler will be a 150 MW (thermal capacity) multi-fuel boiler using Metso's circulating fluidized bed technology and high-performance flue gas cleaning system, giving the new plant very high environmental performance. With this investment, SAICA will minimize its landfill operations and instead recycle paper mill waste into electrical power. SAICA has a production capacity of 2 million metric tpy of corrugated paper. The company currently recycles 2.2 million metric tons of paper per year. SMURFIT-STONE CONTAINER CORP., Chicago, Ill., USA, this week announced a new partnership between its Recycling division and Advanced Disposal Services in Cobb County, Ga. Through the joint venture, the company will convert Cobb County's composting facility in Marietta, Ga., for use as a materials recycling facility (MRF). Smurfit-Stone is retrofitting sort line equipment in the 200,000-ft2 Marietta composting facility to provide residential and commercial recycling services. It also operates Advanced Disposal's MRFs in Jacksonville, Fla., and Atlanta, Ga. Additionally, the company has invested in production tracking equipment to improve customer service and efficiency by identifying and reducing the causes of downtime on its sort lines and balers. TIMBERWEST FOREST CORP., Vancouver, B.C., Canada, says its will divest up to four discrete timberland properties on Vancouver Island in the Province of British Columbia. These timberland assets include the Beauforts, China Creek, Parksville and Trent properties, which comprise a total area of approximately 46,487 acres (or 18,813 hectares) and have a combined timber inventory of more than 4.0 million cubic meters. These four properties represent small, isolated parcels of timberlands, most of which are not contiguous with TimberWest's core timberland operations in either the north or the south of Vancouver Island. TimberWest is western Canada's largest private timber and land management company, owning some 322,000 hectares (796,000 acres) of private land. WEST FRASER TIMBER CO., Vancouver, B.C., Canada, will curtail operations at three of its B.C. lumber production facilities in western Canada for at least two weeks due to continuing weak markets and a strengthening Canadian dollar. North America's largest softwood lumber producer said market-related curtailments will be implemented at its Houston, 100 Mile, and Chasm sawmills for at least two weeks, beginning August 4. The company noted that restart of the operations is dependent on market conditions which it will review on an ongoing basis. West Fraser is an integrated wood products company producing lumber, LVL, MDF, plywood, pulp, linerboard, kraft paper, and newsprint. WEYERHAEUSER, Federal Way., Wash., USA, is closing all tree farms to public access in both Oregon and Washington due to the extreme high fire danger brought on by mid-summer 100 degree weather. PREGIS CORP.'s Hexacomb business unit, Deerfield, Ill., USA, this week launched a 100% paper-based, "environmentally-responsible" graphic display board across North America and Europe, known as Falconboard. The new alternative to petroleum-based display boards is suited for digital and screen printing applications such as signage, point-of-purchase, and trade show displays. It contains a minimum of 20% recycled fiber content, and is 100% recyclable. The display board features an engineered paper core and water-based adhesives coupled with a white printing surface. Produced chlorofluorocarbon-free, it emits zero volatile organic compounds during manufacturing, and is a "green" alternative to traditional foam boards made from polyethylene, polystyrene, or polyvinylchloride. Its resistance to bending or warping provides an alternative to printed corrugated alternatives where increased shelf life and three-dimensional point-of-purchase display stability is a requirement. Falconboard accommodates most inks and adhesives, as well as commercial connective systems such as edge tape and plastic or metal edging/channels. It is lightweight and heat-resistant up to 300 degrees F. VERSO PAPER CORP., Memphis, Tenn., USA, has announced a new line of lightweight uncoated web printing papers: Versobook, Versotext, and Versoblend.
