FROM THE WIRE ![]() Verenium's C5 fermenter at Jennings, La., USA VALUE PRIOR TO PULPING (VPP), an organization created by the Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance, a special project of the American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA), Washington, D.C., and CleanTech Partners of Wisconsin, this week signed an agreement with Verenium Corp., Cambridge, Mass., USA, to test that company's C5 technology effectiveness for the creation of cellulosic ethanol from hemicelluloses generated by the pulp and paper process, creating higher value products without negatively impacting paper quality. VPP is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the State of Wisconsin, and several large forest products companies. A typical 1,500 tpd kraft mill could produce an estimated 15 million gal of ethanol annually. The total potential market opportunity is projected to be between 1.5 and 2 billion gal of ethanol per year. "We believe these types of opportunities to 'bolt' our technology onto existing industrial processes, where the feedstock sourcing, handling, and processing are already well-established, are complementary to our core biofuels strategy," said Carlos Riva, president and CEO of Verenium. Through Vercipia, a 50-50 joint venture with BP, Verenium is moving to commercialize cellulosic technology for the production of ethanol from a wide array of non-food feedstocks, including dedicated energy crops, agricultural waste, and wood products. The company notes that in addition to the vast potential for biofuels, a multitude of large-scale industrial opportunities exist for products derived from the production of low-cost, biomass-derived sugars. ![]() IP's Franklin, Va., mill INTERNATIONAL PAPER, Memphis, Tenn., USA, today announced plans to close its paper mill and associated operations in Franklin, Va., and its containerboard mills in Pineville, La., and Albany, Ore. The company also announced it would permanently shutdown the previously idled No. 3 machine at its Valliant, Okla., containerboard mill. The Valliant Mill's other two machines will continue to operate. These permanent shutdowns will reduce the company's North American paper and board capacity by 2.1 million tons. The closures will affect about 1,600 employees. Closure of the Franklin mill, which has a production capacity of 600,000 tpy (three machines) of uncoated freesheet and 140,000 tpy (one machine) of coated paperboard capacity, will affect an estimated 1,100 employees. Closure of the Albany mill and its two containerboard machines having a total capacity of 580,000 tpy (includes 250,000 tpy of capacity idled a year ago) will affect 270 employees. The Pineville closure, with its one containerboard machine, takes 390,000 tpy of capacity off the market, affecting 230 employees. The No. 3 machine at Valliant (430,000 tpy capacity) had been idled last November and will have no additional employee impact. Following these permanent shutdowns, IP will have approximately 10 million tons of North American containerboard capacity, 2.6 million tons of North American uncoated freesheet production capacity, and 1.7 million tons of North American coated paperboard capacity. THIS WEEK"S MARKET ROUNDUP U.S. MARKET PULP is performing stronger than thought, according to Marke Wilde, senior analyst with Deutche Bank. Prices continue to rally, driven by low mill inventories, strong Chinese demand, and better than expected domestic demand. A weaker U.S. dollar is contributing to the rise in export prices. List prices on domestic NBSK rose for the fifth straight month. On the hardwood side, relatively strong demand and tight supply conditions drove domestic prices upward. In export markets such as China, producers of NBSK, BEK, and other key grades implemented price hikes. Trade sources report that the pricing rebound is drawing high-cost Chinese pulp mills back into production, as current market prices are now well above cash-cost. Canadian producers' net realization is hurt by the rise in the Canadian dollar against the U.S. dollar. U.S. CONTAINERBOARD export prices are up $10 - $20 per ton, Wilde reports. Most European producers have increased unbleached kraft linerboard prices on recycled grades. With domestic box demand still lagging and black liquor tax credits set to expire by year-end, more permanent capacity reductions appear essential. As detailed in a news report above, IP today announced three permanent mill closures, including significant containerboard capacity reductions. AF&PA (the American Forest and Paper Association), Washington D.C., USA, has named Erik Heilman director of Government Affairs. Heilman will be responsible for promoting AF&PA's policy positions on Capitol Hill for climate change, tax, and trade issues. He has an extensive knowledge of international trade and the legislative process developed in both the legislative and executive branches of the federal government. Heilman previously served in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the Department of Commerce, and both the U.S. House and Senate. He has also worked on transportation and appropriations issues. IN OTHER AF&PA NEWS, the association and Scholastic Today unveiled an updated version of their Recycling Starts with You! educational program. Distributed nationwide in print to 100,000 teachers/classrooms and more than 2.5 million students, this program includes a mini-poster featuring standards-based math, science, and language arts lessons about paper recycling for third- through sixth-grade students. The new resources are also available online, along with how-to guides, statistics, and interactive features for educators and students. Also available online is information on the annual AF&PA Recycling Awards, which recognize outstanding school, office, and business paper recycling programs with monetary prizes and national recognition. CANADIAN FORESTRY LEADER Avrim Lazar, president and CEO of the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) and chair of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Paper and Wood Products (ACPWP), this week voiced strong support of the WWF's call-to-action to stop global deforestation, saying the challenge could go even further by including a call to end illegal logging, one of the key contributors to global deforestation. Speaking to more than 6,000 delegates from around the world at the Thirtenth World Forestry Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentine, Lazar held up Canada's environmental record in forestry as setting the standard for excellence in sustainable forest management and the reduction of GHGs. "We are supportive of WWF's initiative calling on others to embrace a global target of zero net deforestation by 2020. The single most powerful measure the world can take to address climate change is to end deforestation. And the first step must be to take aggressive action against illegal logging," Lazar said. One in 25 working Canadians are employed in the forest industry and it is the lifeblood of 300 communities nationally. At the same time, its operations have reportedly reduced GHG emissions by 60% (ten times Kyoto requirements), while increasing production by 8%. Canada also leads the way in sustainable forestry practices, having retained 90% of original forest area and is home to 40% of the world's third-party certified forest land. CASCADES, Kingsey Falls, Que., Canada, this past week inaugurated a major expansion of its tissue plant in Lachute, Que. The expansion, which involved an investment of C$15 million, was eligible for a loan of C$3.1 million from Investissement Québec and financial assistance in the amount of C$413,000 from Emploi-Québec. It enables Cascades to be the first in its category in North America to be awarded LEED-NC (New Construction) certification. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification recognizes buildings that are of high environmental quality and that meet stringent performance standards, notably in terms of energy, water consumption, and the use of local materials. Most materials used in constructing the expansion area of the plant come from an ecological source or a recovery process. In fact, the stained-glass windows and the principal bell from the former Saint-Julien church located in Lachute were harmoniously integrated into the building. The wood frame was supplied by Chantier Chibougamau, a company that is certified ISO 14001 and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and that collects wood residues in order to maximize their use. The expansion supports 150 jobs in the region and will increase the company's converting capacity from 2.231 million to 3.360 million cases of paper hand-towels and toilet paper annually. DOMTAR CORP., Montreal, Que., Canada, this week said it will convert its Plymouth, N.C., USA, mill to 100% fluff pulp production. This will require a $73.5 million investment, in line with the company's previously stated capital expenditure levels. Domtar's annual fluff pulp making capacity will increase almost threefold to 444,000 metric tons. The mill reconfiguration, which will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2010, will also result in the permanent shutdown of Plymouth's remaining paper machine, reducing the company's annual uncoated freesheet production capacity by some 200,000 tons. The mill reconfiguration will help preserve approximately 360 positions, Domtar notes. "We are refocusing Plymouth's operations to capitalize on its competitive strengths. As an experienced fluff pulp manufacturer with an established presence in a growing market, we can expand our capabilities with confidence," said John Williams, president and CEO. MOHAWK FINE PAPERS, Cohoes, N.Y., USA, this week resigned from the United States Chamber of Commerce over climate policy. "We believe that our continued membership in an organization that vigorously opposes sensible climate change policies is detrimental to our position as a business leader with a strong record in the areas of environmental innovation and climate protection," said George Milner, Mohawk's senior VP, Energy, Environmental, and Government Affairs. Mohawk notes that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has been critical of efforts by the EPA to regulate greenhouse gases responsible for global warming and is working to stop the Waxman-Markey climate change bill from passing. "We understand that the U.S. Chamber's job is to promote policies that represent the consensus opinion of its membership; but the Chamber also has a responsibility to shape that consensus with vision, guidance, and leadership that looks beyond ideological divisions. That is particularly important in the area of climate change policies," Milner wrote in a letter to the Chamber. NATIONAL FOREST PRODUCTS WEEK in the U.S. is occurring this week (October 18-24). Established by Congress in 1960, National Forest Products Week reaffirms that the country's leaders recognize the importance of the forest products industry to the U.S. economy, which represents 6% of U.S. manufacturing GDP, AF&PA points out. AF&PA notes that in the area of renewable energy generation, the industry produces more than all the wind, solar, and geothermal energy combined. In the recycling arena, 57.4% of all paper consumed in the U.S. is currently being recycled., and forest and forest products offset 10% of all annual U.S. carbon dioxide emissions, the association emphasizes. National Forest Products Week also recognizes the almost one million American workers who work in the forest products industry and earn more than $50 billion in total payroll annually. The forest products industry's workforce makes it a top-10 manufacturing employer in 48 states. NEENAH PAPER, Alpharetta, Ga., USA, reports that it has partnered with Friends of the Osa and the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin to help reforest a conservation property in Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula, one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world. With Neenah's support and contributions, the reforestation project will remove carbon from the atmosphere, protect and restore viable plant and animal habitats, create a new habitat for endangered wildlife, and restore land degraded by deforestation. The 1,500-acre conservation property in the southeastern portion of the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve harbors the last remaining old growth rainforest on the western flank of Central America. Sandwiched between encroaching development and deforested land, the Osa Peninsula is widely acknowledged as a global conservation priority by conservation organizations such as the Nature Conservancy and Conservation International. NEWPAGE CORP., Miamisburg, Ohio, USA, announced this week the upload of yet another "On Paper" series podcast featuring an interview with Lorie Wigle, Eco-Technology GM for Intel. Designed to bring about positive change in the area of sustainability, this bi-weekly broadcast, now in its second season, has already passed more than one million downloads from popular sites like iTunes, the company reports. In the interview, Wigle explains Intel's four areas of focus in the production of its environmentally-responsible products, including manufacturing/operations, energy efficiency, design for the environment, and work with policy makers. "From an Intel perspective, the really critical thing, we think, is a focus on our products and making our products better for the environment," Wigle says. On Paper podcast schedules are posted online. Listeners can subscribe and receive notifications for future podcast interviews. Click image for larger viewPALM PAPER has successfully started up PM 7 at its King's Lynn, England, mill, three weeks ahead of schedule. The company reports that it has since been producing high-quality newsprint. The paper machine produced the first roll of paper at a basis weight of 45 g/m² and a starting speed of 1,580 m/min. Just one week after startup, paper from PM 7 was printed in a number of printing shops, and both the quality of the paper and the print result "proved highly satisfactory to all those involved." Voith Paper, Germany, which provided the machine, adds that immediately afterwards, regular deliveries began to national and regional newspaper companies. PM 7 has a wire width of 11,400 mm and is designed for a maximum production speed of 2,200 m/min. At a production capacity of 400,000 metric tpy, the machine produces newsprint from 100% recovered paper in the basis weight range of 42-48.8 g/m². The production line, including the stock preparation and approach flow system, was designed on the basis of Voith's One Platform Concept. An automation package as well as initial machine clothing, installation supervision, and startup were all part of Voith's scope of supply. SAPPI FINLAND I OY today announced that it will begin a "consultation process" with its Kangas (Finland) mill employee representatives to determine the best way to improve company profitability, which may include a full closure of the Kangas mill. Sappi notes that the continued level of downtime is no longer considered viable and it is therefore necessary to review production capacity. Possible redundancies would be implemented by the end of this year. The Kangas mill can produce 210,000 metric tpy of coated magazine paper. It employs approximately 150 workers, and the company employs approximately 800 people throughout Finland. Sappi adds that the consultation does not involve its Kirkniemi mill and sales office. In the event that the Kangas mill ceases production, Sappi says the Galerie Silk line produced there would be supplied to customers from its Lanaken mill in Belgium. Sappi would also launch a complementary grade, Galerie Fine Silk, from its Kirkniemi mill. STORA ENSO, Helsinki, Finland, and Arauco, Santiago Chile, this past week completed the acquisition of the majority of Grupo ENCE's operations in Uruguay as announced this past May. The joint acquisition on a 50/50 basis includes approximately 130,000 hectares of owned land and plantations and 6,000 hectares of leased lands and other operations owned by Grupo ENCE in the central and western areas of Uruguay. The enterprise value of the transaction, which was completed ahead of the original target of the end of 2009, was $344 (EUR 253) million, including $33 million of assumed debt. Stora Enso's share of the enterprise value is 50%. Stora and Arauco have established a 50/50 joint venture to combine their existing assets in Uruguay. The parties will integrate the assets acquired from Grupo ENCE into this joint venture, creating a total land base of some 250,000 hectares, nearly half of which is planted with hardwood and softwood. The two companies say they have not made any investment decisions regarding construction of a pulp mill in Uruguay. Paper News
