THE ENVIRONMENTAL TRACK at the 2009 TAPPI Engineering, Pulping & Environmental (EPE) Conference being held October 11-16 in Memphis, Tenn., USA, is one of the strongest in recent years. Presented in seven full technical sessions spread over two days, the 2009 environmental program explores critical environmental issues from sustainability challenges to permitting and residuals management practices. The technical program flash forwards to examine developing regulations and new emissions control technologies in the threshold of implementation.

Monday morning's environmental session looks at carbon footprints in the forest products industry, climate change compliance for integrated mills, and water accounting in sustainability programs. That afternoon's papers on wastewater discharge permitting are followed by an in-depth exploration of mill sludge management practices, and managing and using waste residuals in energy production. Tuesday morning's sessions focus on what lies ahead in the clean air regulations and environmental legislation arenas, followed by a Sustainability Roundtable and an "Air Tutorial" in the afternoon. Also on Tuesday afternoon, membrane WESP, ozone enhanced catalytic oxidation for treating point-of-source waste gas from kraft pulp mills, and leak detection and repair are examined in a series of extensive technical presentations.

TAPPI'S 2009 INTERNATIONAL BIOENERGY & BIOTCHNOLOGY CONFERENCE (IBBC), immediately following EPE October 14-16 at the Marriot Memphis Downtown, has five track focuses: Biomass Supply and Demand (economics, harvesting, and preparations), Technology Conversion Pathways (thermochemical and chemical/biochemical), Yeast and Microorganisms, Keys to Successful Deployment (a panel session), and Practical Biorefineries.

Each day of this year's IBBC event opens with a special keynote address. Wednesday's keynoter is Michael Walsh, executive VP of Chicago Climate Exchange, who will address the implications of carbon emission cap-and-trade systems for biofuels and forest management. On Thursday morning, Valri Lightner, U.S. DOE, will provide an overview of her agency's Biomass Program portfolio of research, development, and demonstration projects. On Friday, Dr. Mark Downing, agricultural economist and senior scientist, Bioenergy Program, Oak Ridge National Lab, will present "Toward an Understanding of the Multidisciplinary Research Approaches for the Integrated Biorefinery."

THIS WEEK'S MARKET ROUNDUP
CONTAINERBOARD. August containerboard and box numbers show that shipment volumes remained weak, and that inventories remained about flat m/m, Mark Wilde, senior analyst at Deutsche Bank, reports, noting that the normal seasonal pattern in August is a modest decline in inventories. Trade flows improved slightly, Wilde adds, but cautions that "these numbers do nothing to change our view that a price hike initiative in the fall is unlikely."

Box shipment volumes fell 9.6% y/y in August, according to Wilde. "We consider this a fair y/y comp, because August 2008 had the same number of shipping days as this year. This is roughly in-line with the 9.4% decline that we saw in July, as well as the YTD 'blended' (midpoint of actual and average week) comp of -9.9%," he says.

Combined mill and box plant inventories fell just 1,000 tons m/m, Wilde points out. Measured in terms of weeks of supply, the number remained flat at 3.6. Based on the past decade, inventories typically fall by an average of 24,000 tons m/m in August, implying a negative variance of 23,000 tons. Total inventories now stand at 2.32 million tons, still near the low end of a normal historical range, Wilde explains.

CENVEO INC., Stamford, Conn., USA, this week completed the acquisition of New Hampshire-based Nashua Corp. The combined company is one of the largest manufacturers of pharmaceutical, scale, and shelf labels in the U.S., serving customers in the pharmacy, retail, and grocery markets as well as point of sale and wide-format printing markets. Under terms of the acquisition, which was recently approved at a meeting of Nashua shareholders, each share of common stock of Nashua will be converted into $0.75 per share in cash and 1.265 shares of Cenveo common stock.

FRENCH DELIPAPIER, a subsidiary of the Italian paper group Sofidel, will build a new tissue mill in Ingrandes in central France. The EUR 120 million investment will be implemented in two phases. The first phase, a converting facility, will startup in mid-2011, and the Phase 2 tissue mill will reportedly come online in 2014. Delipapier has an existing tissue mill in Nancy, in the Northeastern section of France.

ICJ (the International Court of Justice) in The Hague, The Netherlands, this week began hearing three weeks of final arguments in a closely watched dispute over sustainable development between Uruguay and Argentina over the Metsa Botnia (Finland) paper mill on the Uruguay River. The case is only the second environmental dispute to be decided by the ICJ, and the first since the 1990s. Arguments will be heard by 17 judges from around the world, who are expected to issue a decision sometime next spring. The Uruguay River forms part of the border between the two nations, and Argentina argues that the pulp mill, in Uruguayan territory, releases harmful contaminants into the river and should be demolished. Uruguay contends that the mill, approved through a thorough permitting process, is a model of eco-responsibility that has not damaged water quality or aquatic life. Uruguay won the first round before the ICJ, which by a near-unanimous vote in July 2006 refused to order that construction of the mill be halted. The facility opened in November 2007 and has been operating for nearly two years. Funded through the International Finance Corp. arm of the World Bank, the mill was also subject to a rigorous environmental review and approval process at the IFC. It is the largest foreign-investment project in Uruguay's history. During the final hearing process, Argentina, as plaintiff, is arguing this week, September 14-17. Uruguay will follow next week, September 21-24. The third week is reserved for rebuttals, with Argentina presenting on Monday and Tuesday, September 28-29, and Uruguay on Thursday and Friday, October 1-2.

KIMBERLY-CLARK CORP., Dallas, Texas, USA, for the fifth year in a row, leads the personal products category of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI). Only the top 10% of the world's largest 2,500 companies qualify for this list, which is based on an evaluation of the economic, environmental, and social performance of these companies. This year, in addition to being the overall leader in its category, the DJSI recognized K-C for its Environmental Vision program, which provides direction, objectives, and targets to improve environmental management and performance. The company also received superior marks for its consistently high consumer satisfaction and its process for exploring consumer insights and incorporating consumer feedback into the company's processes. K-C's approach to consumers, local sourcing, and local hiring in emerging markets was also recognized, along with its consistent annual revenue growth from D&E markets and its Enterprise Risk Management process and Global Risk Oversight committee that oversees strategies for financial, strategic, and compliance risks.

NEENAH PAPER, Alpharetta, Ga., USA, less than three weeks after completing a partnership agreement with Crane & Co. to manufacture, market, and distribute its fine business papers, reports that it has completed the integration of Crane's Crest, Bond, Lettra, Palette, and Choice Papers into its business papers portfolio. Neenah has manufactured 100% cotton business paper for Crane & Co. since 2007. Through its initial partnership agreement with Crane, Neenah manufactured the paper, although Crane continued to market and distribute it. The agreement signed on August 27 was an extension of that partnership and allows Neenah to manufacture, market, and distribute Crane fine business papers.

SCHWEITZER-MAUDUIT INTERNATIONAL, Alpharetta, Ga., USA, has reorganized its largest French paper mill, Papeteries de Mauduit (PDM) SAS, located in Quimperle, France, including plans to reduce employee levels in 2010 by 106 people, or 15% of the current workforce at the mill. Meetings with the unions and the Work's Council must be completed before the amount of the restructuring expenses, timing, and ongoing benefits of the changes can be definitively known. However, cash severance expenses associated with this action are expected to total some $14 million through the planned completion of the actions in the second quarter 2010 and result in annual pre-tax savings of approximately $8 million, or $0.36 per share, with roughly half of these savings to be realized during 2010.

SONOCO, Hartsville, S.C., USA, reports that it has simplified its business structure, providing "the necessary scale" in its Consumer and Industrial packaging and services businesses "to drive profitable growth and obtain sustainable operating efficiencies." Overall, 19 separate businesses are being consolidated into six Consumer and Industrial business units with a direct reporting line to the company's senior leadership. Nine Consumer Packaging and Services businesses are being consolidated into four global business units, headed by Charles Sullivan, executive VP, Consumer. Ten North American Industrial Products divisions are being consolidated into two North American business units and three international divisions, reporting to Jack Sanders, executive VP, Industrial.

STRATHCONA PAPER LP, Napanee, Ont., Canada, producer of medium-to-heavy weight paperboard, has been granted Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody certification. The certification validates that Strathcona Paper produces only 100% recycled paperboard from verified recycled sources. The company notes that it is the only 100% recycled, clay coated paperboard mill in North America with ISO 14001 certification, and that its GreenChoice 100 product is the only coated paperboard that is 100% recycled, 100% carbon neutral, and manufactured using 100% clean energy.

U.S. EPA will likely grant an industry request allowing facilities to estimate rather than monitor greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the early years of its GHG-reporting program, according to a report this past week in Waste Business Journal.com (WBJ). Environmentalists and others, however, are concerned about the effectiveness and accuracy of estimation methods that can result in under-reporting of emissions by as much as 70%., the report notes. EPA will soon release new methods for estimating emissions. The WBJ report is available online.

WAUSAU PAPER CORP., Mosinee, Wis., USA, today reported that it plans to consolidate its Specialty Products and Printing and Writing Papers units into one business segment, under the name Wausau Paper Mills LLC. The consolidation will trim administrative costs by more than $2 million a year, the company notes. Scheduled to be completed by January 1, the consolidation is designed to improve manufacturing flexibility. Henry Newell, currently senior VP of Specialty Products, will be in charge of the combined business segment, and will oversee the consolidation. Wausau produces printing and writing papers, technical specialty papers, and away-from-home towel and tissue products, the latter not being affected by the consolidation. The company operates mills in Rhinelander, Brokaw, and Mosinee, Wis., and in Brainerd, Minn.

PaperWorks really works
Talk about a refreshing concept! Corporate America comes to TAPPI.

On September 10, 2009 we had the privilege of hosting a budget review meeting for PaperWorks Industries, Inc. at TAPPI's headquarters in Norcross, GA. PaperWorks is TAPPI's newest Sustaining Member. They also added six PaperWorks employees to the ranks of new TAPPI Members while they were in Norcross.

Our guest list included: Tom Garland, President/CEO; Mark P. Roy, Senior Vice President - Commercial Developments; Fred Kalakay, General Manager, Wabash Mill; Jerry Tassone, National Accounts Manager; Jeff Lindsay, Technical Service Sales Manager; Jeff Barnhart, Tim Jacob, Pierre Michaud, and Mick Tomec, Account Managers; and Scott Oertel, Process Engineer. Needless to say we left them alone to conduct their business, but we did have the opportunity to share the TAPPI story with this progressive team from our industry.

I was very impressed with this group's forward-thinking attitude for an industry that we sometimes feel is antiquated. Many of these individuals have been in the industry for several years with other companies, but they somehow have brought a new attitude to this young, yet growing company run by Tom Garland.

Philadelphia is home to the PaperWorks corporate office and to one of the company's two mills. Along with its sister mill in Wabash, Ind., they combine to make PaperWorks the third-largest coated recycled boxboard manufacturer in the U.S.

"PaperWorks, although a new company, has been built to last," says Tom Garland. "Sun Capital Partners has structured us with seasoned staff, excellent backing and a long-term plan. Since we are going to be here for the long haul, we're invested in keeping the planet in great shape along with us."

PaperWorks has certainly not stood still. Just last month they announced thier merger with The Specialized Packaging Group. This merger brings together two high-performing companies with broad capabilities in clay coated recycled boxboard and folding carton converting.

Tom also commented, "This merger presents us with an opportunity to take our business to the next level and enhance our ability to deliver competitive, high quality and innovative paperboard packaging solutions to our customers."

TAPPI Skill Standard Guideline: We need your input
TAPPI has a long, credible history of producing technical, world-renown Standards for the pulp, paper and related industries. TAPPI has recently approved a change of the regulations related to Standards to include the development of Standards that go beyond test methods to include glossaries, specifications and other guidelines. A new TAPPI Standard Guideline, "Training standard for paper machine tender", has been proposed.

This training-based standard provides guidelines for skills and knowledge needed by a paper machine tender, based on an extensive Developing A Curriculum (DACUM) method review of operator positions in the paper mill. The DACUM work was conducted by the National Network for Pulp and Paper Technology Training, (npt)2, in consultation with industry incumbent workers in the Pacific, Northwest, Northeast, Southeast and Midwest.

The standard describes the skills and knowledge that are significant to the job of paper machine tender, a key position in the mill. The skills contained in the standard must be acquired by the incumbent worker in the machine tender job classification. Training investments should be targeted toward closing the gap between a paper machine tender's currents skills and those identified in this skill standard.

TAPPI needs participants to review this Standard Guideline. If you would like to participate in the review of this Standard Guideline, please join the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) so that you will receive the ballot. The deadline for response to this notice has been extended to October 1, 2009. Your responsibilities as a SSIG participant consist of electronic balloting activities regarding the content of the paper machine tender standard. To join the SSIG for the Paper Machine Tender Standard, please contact the TAPPI Standards Department via email at standards@tappi.org no later than October 1, 2009.

If you would like more information about the original work done to generate this standard, (npt)2 or the DACUM work, please contact Mary Beth Cornell, TAPPI Training Director, +1 770-209-7210.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
" The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born -- that there is a genetic factor to leadership. This myth asserts that people simply either have certain charismatic qualities or not. That's nonsense; in fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born."
