The addition of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) to cementitious systems have made a number of improvements in fresh and hardened properties.  Previous work has reported benefits including improved strength, viscosity and barrier properties.  These improvements can provide fundamental improvements of the performance of concrete structures, while decreasing their carbon footprint.

In order for CNC to be used in commercial concrete mixes, several questions must be answered. They include:

  • How does CNC interact with other additives?
  • How does CNC affect fresh concrete properties such as slump, set time and air entrainment?
  • How can CNC addition be reliably integrated into concrete production systems?
  • What are the benefits to the manufacturer?
  • What are the benefits to the end user?

This webinar will answer the above questions based on results of pilot and commercial scale concrete tests conducted by Blue Goose Biorefineries Inc.  It will also demonstrate the most promising applications for CNC in cementitious systems.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the effect of CNC has on concrete structures.
  • Understand the commercial implications of introducing a new concrete admixture.
