A presentation of FiberLean MFC (micro-fibrillated cellulose) technologies and know-how for paper and boardmakers will offer insights into disruptive, robust grinding technology, the centerpiece of MFC modules in place—fully commercialized and scalable. You will also learn about surface application methodology to convert brown board to whitetop without a machine rebuild. In addition, the presenters will comment on the original MFC mix of minerals and MFC and the more recent advances with pure MFC and MFC from recycled fiber.

MFC recipes and know-how will be discussed for mills facing raw material cost increases and additive shortages while at the same time driven to produce higher value grades. This includes lightweighting, alternative natural barriers, and other sustainability advantages. Per Svending (Project Leader FLoT) and Tom Larson (Head of Business Development, Paper, and Board) will present the MFC journey to commercialization, and potential for widespread growth.

Per Svending, an inventor of wet-end coating with MFC,Per Svending 1.PNG FiberLean on Top (FloT), has spent over 40 years in the pulp and paper industry, mainly as a supplier. Now heading up FiberLean on Top projects, he has held top global leadership positions in marketing and FiberLean, Imerys, and Omya since 2000. Early in his career, he made the initial discovery of synergy between colloidal silica and cationic starch. He was part of the team that patented and developed Eka Chemicals’ Compozil. He has a degree in chemical engineering from Ascheberg College, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Tom Larson, Head of Business Development, Paper and1587394806311-2.jpeg Board, plays a central role in expanding FiberLean Technologies MFC Module units at pulp and paper mills and wet-end applicators. He supports the commercialization of the MFC portfolio of products and technologies by working with a team of scientists, applications, and financial specialists. Previously, he was FiberLean’s technology implementation manager for five years and was a scientist before that. He holds a BSc Natural Science chemistry degree from The Open University and an engineering degree from Truro & Penwith College in Cornwall, UK.
