IBBC Keynote Focuses on Transforming Kraft Pulp Mill into Biorefinery
As growing concerns about climate change have led many companies to look for alternatives to fossil-based fuels and material, we are witnessing a new trend: pulp mills turning into multi-product biorefineries that utilize all biomass components instead of producing single grade pulp.
This shift has produced new value-added revenue streams such as biocoal production from bark, lignin extractions from black liquor and methanol, and nanocellulose production. To help pulp mills transform into cost effective and sustainable biorefineries, Valmet is developing a “total pulp mill” concept and will share details of this innovative approach during TAPPI’s 2019 International Bioenergy and Bioproducts Conference (IBBC).
Jukka Mäkinen, Director of Research and Development at Valmet, will be the keynote speaker at IBBC 2019, October 27-30 in St. Louis. During his presentation, “Developing the Cost Effective and Sustainable Biorefinery,” Mäkinen will discuss Valmet’s concept and share key components for developing a modern biorefinery. He will also address how new revenue streams can be integrated into pulp mill operations without jeopardizing pulp production, and how they can benefit the mill platform and utilities.
IBBC focuses on the latest technologies and processes using renewable materials from biomass to produce chemicals, fuels, and other value-added products. It offers attendees a peer-reviewed technical program addressing key topics relating to: biorefinery technologies; bioproduct innovations; product and operation valorization; and nonwoods, a PEERS crossover session. IBBC attendees can also attend the New Technology Showcase, Hot Topics Breakfasts, exhibits, committee meetings and multiple networking events during the Conference.
IBBC is co-located with TAPPI’s Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling and Sustainability (PEERS) Conference and the 12th Research Forum on Recycling. Attendees can attend all three conferences for the price of one. Mills receive a special discount.
