Valmet and GPI Digester Optimization Project Featured at PEERS 2019

Today’s pulp and paper mills operate under constant pressure to reduce production costs and increase yields. The kraft pulp digester operation plays a critical role in the whole pulp mill economy and consistent pulp quality has a direct impact on bottom line profits. To maintain quality targets, digester optimization through continuous cooking alkali profile management has become increasingly important.

Recently, Valmet Inc. and Graphic Packaging International (GPI) collaborated on a continuous digester optimization project with the goal to reduce kappa variation, ease up operation and increase the yield and paper mill runnability. The project, involving three digesters at GPI’s West Monroe facility, had significant results including a 50% reduction in digester blow kappa variations.  PEERS 2019 attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the project when Kari Lampela of Valmet presents “GPI West Monroe Digester Optimization Project” during the Pulping and Bleaching track.

TAPPI’s  Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling and Sustainability (PEERS) Conference, October 27-30, 2019 in St. Louis, MO, is considered the premier technical event focusing on the latest advances in technology, as well as fundamental process knowledge and control issues mills face each day. Its comprehensive technical program includes eight program tracks emphasizing new methods and best practices to help mills optimize operations and reach their sustainability goals. View the PEERS 2019 Technical Program.

The Pulping and Bleaching track addresses new developments in bleaching chemistry, bleaching optimization, bleaching equipment, digester operations, brown stock washing, and pulping optimization.

Track presentations include:

  • TCF Bleaching of Viscose Pulp
  • Singlet Oxygen as a Safe and Simple Substitute for Peracetic Acid
  • Effect of Defoamer for the Gas Content and Performance of O2 Washers – Mill Case
  • Brown Stock Washing Cost Optimization
  • Technical and Economic Modeling of the Impact of Kraft Chemistry on Costs
  • Bleach Plan Scale Control Best Practices to Minimize Barium Sulphate and Calcium Oxalate
  •  to Minimize Down Time and Cost
  • Turbo Scrubber as a Bleach Plant Scrubber Application
  • And more

The Conference also offers a tutorial, workshops, and committee meetings focused on various aspects of the pulping and bleaching process. In addition, a New Technology Showcase, Hot Topics Breakfasts, exhibits, and multiple special events will take place during the four-day event.

PEERS is co-located International Bioenergy & Bioproducts Conference (IBBC) and the 12th Research Forum on Recycling. Attendees can attend all three events for only one registration fee.
