TAPPI Journal Names Two Best Papers for 2020

Each year, the TAPPI Journal (TJ) Editorial Board honors the best of TJ content by nominating and voting for the TAPPI Journal Best Research Paper, which is ultimately selected based on scientific merit, innovation, creativity, and clarity. For the first time since the award was established in 2006, the Board selected two winning papers for 2020.

Recently Peter Hart, TJ Editor-in-Chief, was interviewed for O’Papel, a publication from ABTCP (Associação Brasileira Técnia de Celulose e Papel/Brazilian Technical Association of Pulp and Paper) about the selection process. The English translation of the full interview appears in the April 2021 issue of TAPPI Journal.

In addition to receiving Best Research Paper honors, Panek will also be awarded the Honghi Tran TAPPI Journal Best Research Paper Prize, a $2,000 cash prize endowed by Honghi Tran, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto (UT) and author or co-author of more than 80 papers published in TJ, including the second winning paper for 2020.

Modeling of the energy of a smelt-water explosion in the recovery boiler dissolving tank” by Eric Jin, Malcom Mackenzie, Steve Osborne and Tran, ran in the August 2020 issue. A former student of Tran, Jin is a performance engineering specialist and Mackenzie is a technology manager for The Babcock & Wilcox Company in Cambridge, ON, Canada. Osborne is an advisory engineer for The Babcock & Wilcox Company in Akron, Ohio.

“Under the tutelage of Tran, teams continue to add high quality content in the liquor cycle, kiln, and recausticizing arenas making the Board’s selection even more difficult,” Hart went on to say.

Tran established the Prize in 2019 to encourage and reward the publication of high-quality research in TJ.

“The TJ Editorial Board would like to thank Dr. Tran for establishing this award. Our hope is that it infuses other groups with a healthy dose of competitive spirit, resulting in additional high-quality research papers from across the industry to be considered in future best paper decisions,” said Hart.

The awards will be presented at TAPPICon LIVE!, October 3-6, 2021 in Atlanta, Ga., USA.
