Breaking Down Barriers Isn’t Just About Communication

With growing concern about the global environment, consumers are putting greater pressure on companies to develop more recyclable and sustainable approaches when producing packaging. Functional coatings applied to paper and paperboard substrates as a barrier to media such as oil and grease (OGR), water, water vapor (MVTR) and oxygen are under scrutiny.

Don Ventresca of Trinseo will offer an innovative solution to barrier coating during his presentation, “Multi-functional Barrier Coating Systems Created by Multi-layer Curtain Coating,” at TAPPICon 2023. As part of the Coating and Graphic Arts track, Ventresca’s presentation will address water-based barrier coatings for OGR, water, MVTR and oxygen barrier performance. He will share details on a coated system that can achieve more than one barrier property, using multi-layer curtain coating (MLCC), in one application step. Attendees will also learn how MLCC can ultimately lower their material costs.

Coating and Graphic Arts
The Coating and Graphic Arts track includes over 18 expert-led presentations from leading institutions such as Åbo Akademi University, ALBERDINGK BOLEY GmbH, Billerud, Donostia International Physics Center, Imerys Minerals Ltd., Karlstad University of Sweden, Kuraray America, Inc., OMYA AG, North Carolina State University, Recycled Paperboard Technical Association (RPTA), RISE AB, The Dow Chemical Company, Technick Products, Thiele Kaolin Company, Trinseo, and University of Maine.
