Developing TAPPI Standards

Standards are of the utmost importance in the pulp, paper and converting industries as they have a serious impact on business and trade. As a member, you are eligible to get involved in the process of developing new Standards for the industry.

How to Propose new Standards

Are you interested in proposing a new Standard? We encourage members to consult our complete list of subject categories for Standards below, or view the PDF list.

If you have a general idea for a Standard, you can complete the New Idea Submission Form. We will review your idea and identify the right committee or group to work on your suggestion.

If you already further along, you can send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. A Standards manager will then work with you to develop a Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) for the new Standard. This will set in motion the development and review process, which is described in the Standards Guidelines.

PMP Starts up New Tissue Mill for Universal Paper Manufacturers, South Africa (2/28/2017)

In December 2014, PMP (Paper Machinery Producer), Jelenia Góra, Poland, signed a contract with Universal Paper Manufacturers (UPM), part of the Universal Paper group, for a turn-key, green field tissue mill based on the Intelli-Tissue® Advanced 1600 tissue making line. PMP this week announced that on Feb. 19, 2017, at 11:20 a.m. local time, TM 5 successfully started up at UPM’s Ga-Rankuwa mill in South Africa.

Rengo Makes Asahi Shiko a Wholly-Owned Corrugated Subsidiary (2/10/2017)

Rengo Co. (Kita-ku, Osaka, Japan) Chairman, President, and CEO Kiyoshi Otsubo announced that the company has acquired all of Nippon Paper Industries’ shares of Rengo consolidated subsidiary Asahi Shiko Co. (Konosu-shi, Saitama Prefecture, Japan). The investment ration prior to the acquisition was Rengo 60%, Nippon Paper Industries 40%. Asahi Shiko is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rengo.

Sappi Maastricht Orders Valmet Machine Rebuild to Board Production (2/27/2017)

Valmet, Finland, will rebuild a paper machine for Sappi Maastricht in the Netherlands. With the rebuilt PM 6, Sappi will be able to improve the existing graphical board products and move into producing high quality solid bleached board (SBB) and folding box board (FBB) grades. Today PM 6 is producing coated woodfree (CWF) paper grades. Startup of the rebuilt machine is scheduled for early 2018. The value of the order was not disclosed.
