Developing TAPPI Standards

Standards are of the utmost importance in the pulp, paper and converting industries as they have a serious impact on business and trade. As a member, you are eligible to get involved in the process of developing new Standards for the industry.

How to Propose new Standards

Are you interested in proposing a new Standard? We encourage members to consult our complete list of subject categories for Standards below, or view the PDF list.

If you have a general idea for a Standard, you can complete the New Idea Submission Form. We will review your idea and identify the right committee or group to work on your suggestion.

If you already further along, you can send an initial draft to A Standards manager will then work with you to develop a Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) for the new Standard. This will set in motion the development and review process, which is described in the Standards Guidelines.

Appleton Coated Discontinues Utopia One Paper Line (9/01/2016)

Appleton Coated (Combined Locks, Wis., USA) announced this week that it is discontinuing the Utopia One (U1) paper line as an inventory-supported stocking grade. Existing inventory of Utopia One is being sold until depleted and stock will not be replenished. Effective with this announcement, U1 becomes a making-only grade with requisite minimum and trim requirements.

Kraft Paper Shipments by U.S. Producers Down 3.7% in April (5/26/2016)

Total U.S. kraft paper shipments in April 2016 were 137,800 tons, which is 3.7% lower than in April 2015, according to the AF&PA (Washington, D.C., USA) April 2016 Kraft Paper Report issued this past week.

Munksjö to Rebuild Specialty Paper Machine at Arches Mill in France (9/09/2016)

Munksjö’s (Finland) Arches facility in France is producing specialty papers for several product applications. To secure the leading position within abrasive backings and due to increased customer demand, a paper machine at the production facility will be rebuilt.

Voith Introduces MatchPress for Press Rolls, MatchFlow for Suction Rolls (5/06/2016)

Two new roll covers, MatchPress for press rolls and MatchFlow for suction press rolls, are additions to Voith‘s (Germany) product portfolio. MatchPress and MatchFlow are designed for graphic and packaging paper machines with a wire width of up to 6,000 mm and speeds up to 800 m/min.

Voith Paper N.A. Partners with SKF USA to Set New Standards for PM Reliability (5/12/2016)

Voith Paper, Germany, now has an SKF certified bearing inspection facility. Voith Paper North America, headquartered in Raleigh, N.C., USA, this week announced a strategic Preferred Service Partner agreement with SKF USA Inc., Lansdale, Pa., where SKF will supply its expertise, quality bearings, advanced tools, and equipment that can save time during repairs in Voith’s Neenah, Wis., rolls facility.

Stora Enso to Divest Kabel Mill in Germany (5/30/2016)

Stora Enso, Finland, has signed an agreement to divest its Kabel coated mechanical paper mill in Germany to Hagen-Kabel Pulp & Paper GmbH, owned by a German based investor group.

Fila Acquires St. Cuthberts Paper Mill in U.K. (9/27/2016)

Fabbrica Italiana Lapis ed Affini S.p.A. (FILA), an Italian artistry tools company), has announced the full acquisition of St Cuthberts Holding Ltd. and its operating company (St Cuthberts). The economic value of the operation, in line with the price paid, was equal to GBP 5.4 million ($7.2 million).

Solenis to Acquire Nopco Paper Technology (9/05/2016)

Effective today (Sept. 5, 2016) Solenis, Wilmington, Del., USA, signed an agreement to acquire the shares in Nopco Holding AS and related subsidiaries (Nopco), Germany, a producer and supplier of advanced chemical solutions for the pulp and paper industry. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2016, following receipt of customary regulatory approvals in Germany.

Minerals Technologies Signs 25th Agreement for Fulfill High-Filler Technology (5/24/2016)

Minerals Technologies Inc., New York, N.Y., USA, has entered into a commercial agreement with another leading paper company in China to provide Fulfill® E-325 higher filler technology, which allows papermakers to produce quality paper at lower cost by replacing higher-cost fiber with precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC).

Valmet Receives Nine New Orders for Automated Paper Testing Labs (9/22/2016)

Valmet, Finland, reports that it has recently received, all together, nine orders for its automated paper testing laboratory from various paper mills around the world. Three of the Valmet Paper Lab units will be delivered to North America, four to Europe, and two to Asia. The deliveries will take place later this year.

Port Townsend Brings Stage 1 of Compressed Natural Gas Conversion Online (9/06/2016)
