Developing TAPPI Standards

Standards are of the utmost importance in the pulp, paper and converting industries as they have a serious impact on business and trade. As a member, you are eligible to get involved in the process of developing new Standards for the industry.

How to Propose new Standards

Are you interested in proposing a new Standard? We encourage members to consult our complete list of subject categories for Standards below, or view the PDF list.

If you have a general idea for a Standard, you can complete the New Idea Submission Form. We will review your idea and identify the right committee or group to work on your suggestion.

If you already further along, you can send an initial draft to A Standards manager will then work with you to develop a Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) for the new Standard. This will set in motion the development and review process, which is described in the Standards Guidelines.

Volga to Install Andritz ATMP System at Pulp Mill in Russia (9/21/2016)

Andritz, Graz, Austria, has received an order from JSC Volga in Balakhna, Nizhegorodskaya oblast, Russia, to deliver a complete state-of-the-art ATMP (Advanced Thermo-mechanical Pulp) line, which will process 100% spruce for the production of softwood pulp. Startup of the new line, which will be combined with existing equipment, is scheduled for 2019.

Valmet AB to Deliver Brown Stock Washing Plant to Södra Cell Mörrum (5/04/2016)

In February 2016, the Södra Board of Directors decided to invest SEK 1 billion in a new evaporator and modernization of the brown stock washing plant in the dissolving pulp line, where textile pulp is produced, at the Södra Cell Mörrum mill in Sweden.

Tembec's (Canada) specialty dissolving pulp mill in Tartas, France, has ordered a Valmet IQ quality control system (QCS) and an expansion of its existing Valmet DNA distributed control system (DCS) for its pulp dryer. By complementing its current control system with this investment, the mill is targeting to improve process stability and reduce lost time during transition phases such as startups, breaks, and speed changes. Startup of the new QCS is scheduled for October 2016. Typically the order value of this kind of automation system deliveries is below EUR 1 million, according to Valmet.

Domtar Ashdown Mill Set for July 3 Fluff Pulp Conversion Startup (5/25/2016)

According to a feature article this past Saturday (May 21) by The Texarkana Gazette, Texarkana, Tex., USA, on March 31 the local A64 paper machine at Domtar's (Montreal, Canada) Ashdown, Ark., USA, mill produced its last reel of paper, marking the final day of operation for one machine and setting the stage for a new era and the future of the site.
