Developing TAPPI Standards

Standards are of the utmost importance in the pulp, paper and converting industries as they have a serious impact on business and trade. As a member, you are eligible to get involved in the process of developing new Standards for the industry.

How to Propose new Standards

Are you interested in proposing a new Standard? We encourage members to consult our complete list of subject categories for Standards below, or view the PDF list.

If you have a general idea for a Standard, you can complete the New Idea Submission Form. We will review your idea and identify the right committee or group to work on your suggestion.

If you already further along, you can send an initial draft to A Standards manager will then work with you to develop a Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) for the new Standard. This will set in motion the development and review process, which is described in the Standards Guidelines.

Resolute Forest Products  (Montreal, Que., Canada) today (August 11) announced that it, along with Serres Toundra Inc., has entered into a definitive agreement with CO2 Solutions Inc. to deploy leading enzyme-enabled carbon capture technology at Resolute's Saint-Félicien pulp mill, also located in Quebec.

Evoqua to Provide Systems for Bioenergy Plant at P&G Tissue Mill in Georgia (8/10/2016)

Evoqua, Warrendale, Pa., USA, was selected by energy developer DCO Energy LLC to provide equipment and services for a new $200 million, 50 MW biomass/wood waste-to-energy cogeneration project for Procter & Gamble Co. in Albany, Georgia. The new plant, to be built by DCO Energy, will provide 100% of the steam energy used by P&G's Albany manufacturing facility. The steam will be used mainly for drying tissue paper.

St. Croix Tissue Commissions ABB for Automation, Power to New Mill (8/10/2016)

ABB (Zurich, Switzerland) recently commissioned the electrical and automation systems and equipment for the two new tissue production machines at St. Croix Tissue’s newly constructed mill in Baileyville, Me., USA. The first machine started production earlier this year.

Trees Could Help Strengthen Auto Parts (8/04/2016)

Trees that are removed during forest restoration projects could find their way into car bumpers and fenders, as part of a study led by Srikanth Pilla of Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., USA. Pilla is collaborating on the study with researchers from the USDA Forest Service’s Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wis.

Metsä Board to Close PM 3 in Hämeenkyrö, Finland (8/11/2016)

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group (Helsinki, Finland), is planning to close down its wallpaper base machine PM 3 and discontinue its loss-making wallpaper base manufacturing at the Kyro mill in Hämeenkyrö, Finland.

Zhejiang Dongda Paper Has Valmet Supply Moisturizer System to Mill in China (8/11/2016)

Valmet (Espoo, Finland) announced yesterday (August 10) the company will supply a moisturizer system to Zhejiang Dongda Paper Co. in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. The new solution, Valmet IQ Moisturizer, will enable the mill to improve board quality on its paper machine PM2.

Philadelphia, Baltimore Schools Replace Polystyrene Plates with Molded Fiber Compostables (2/16/2018)

The American-made round plates now being used in school cafeterias are produced from 100% pre-consumer recycled paper fibers. The new plates, manufactured in Maine by Huhtamaki North America, are keeping 19 Million polystyrene serving items out of landfills.
