Breaking Boundaries in Sustainable Packaging

As concerns about plastic pollution and environmental sustainability continue to rise, the demand for eco-friendly alternatives in food packaging is gaining momentum. One such alternative is molded fiber, which is regaining popularity for food service applications due to its biodegradability and renewable nature. However, a key challenge has been making molded fiber products water and grease resistant without resorting to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs), which have raised environmental and health concerns.

At TAPPI's 2024 International Conference on Nanotechnology for Renewable Materials (Nano), June 10-14 in Atlanta, GA, Mamoona Raheem from the University of Maine will present a groundbreaking study titled "Optimization And Surface Modification of Food Serving Containers Using Lignocellulosic Materials." This presentation, part of the Coatings and Packaging session on Wednesday, June 12, delves into an innovative approach to address this challenge.

During his presentation, Raheem will share results of a study focused on developing an environmentally safe composite system for food serving containers using cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as a binder. Attendees will learn how an optimized formulation of wood fiber (WF), bleached kraft pulp (BKP) and CNF combined with a gas-phase surface treatment, can improve the water resistance, grease resistance, and mechanical properties of molded fiber objects.

Raheem's research represents a significant step forward in the quest for sustainable and high-performance food packaging solutions. By leveraging lignocellulosic materials and innovative surface modification techniques, the study demonstrates the feasibility of producing functional and eco-friendly food serving containers.
