Guest Editorial: Fifty years with TAPPI: A personal and professional perspective, TAPPI Journal June 2020
ABSTRACT: While reflecting on this being my 50th year in TAPPI, it dwaned on me that my father Murray must also have been a TAPPI member for a similar length of time and that he probably joined TAPPI for the same reasons--we both had just started our first jobs in the pulp and paper industry and wanted to learn ecerything we could about the underlying technology.

Alternative “green” lime kiln fuels: Part II—Woody biomass, bio-oils, gasification, and hydrogen, TAPPI Journal May 2020
ABSTRACT: This paper is the second of a two-part series on “green” lime kiln fuels. The first part of this work reviews the use of pulp mill and recovery byproducts as either full or partial replacement of oil or natural gas in the kiln. The second part reviews the use of various forms of woody biomass, bio-oils, gasification and hydrogen as potential carbon neutral or carbon-free lime kiln fuels. Several of these options require specialized burners to supply the fuel to the kiln and high-quality metallurgy to withstand the acidic conditions of the fuel.

Determining operating variables that impact internal fiber bonding using Wedge statistical analysis methods, TAPPI Journal November 2021
ABSTRACT: In this study, Wedge statistical analysis tools were used to collect, collate, clean up, plot, and analyze several years of operational data from a commercial paper machine. The z-direction tensile (ZDT) and Scott Bond tests were chosen as representative of fiber bond strength. After analyzing thousands of operational parameters, the ones with the most significant impact upon ZDT involved starch application method, starch penetration, and the amount of starch applied. Scott bond was found to be significantly impacted by formation and refining. Final calendering of the paper web has also shown an impact on internal fiber bonding.

Papermaking properties of bacterial nanocellulose produced from mother of vinegar, a waste product after classical vinegar production, TAPPI Journal April 2020
ABSTRACT: Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) has gained a lot of attention in recent years due to its nano-size-derived properties. Although it is essentially chemically similar to plant-derived cellulose, it has smaller size and is enriched in free hydroxyl groups, which greatly improve mechanical properties of reinforced paper. However, although BNC has some unique features, it comes at a high price. In this paper, we introduce a new solution for BNC production. We have isolated bacterial nanocellulose directly from agro-industrial waste—mother of vinegar—and used it in the production of paper sheets. We show here that paper sheets made with the addition of only 10% bacterial nanocellulose from mother of vinegar substantially improved basic mechanical as well as printing properties of paper.
