Advanced manufacturing is gaining attention in developed economies due to national security issues, calls for developing domestic supply chains, and more importantly, the need for creating jobs. COVID-19 exposed vulnerabilities in the manufacturing of lifesaving and critical items such as N95 masks. Tariffs are considered one avenue to protect domestic manufacturing, but in the case of manufactured products like commodity textiles, a tariff barrier alone will not be able to bring back manufacturing. It is a beneficial move by the U.S. government to boost manufacturing through investments in research and development (R&D), enhancing the advanced manufacturing sector focusing on defense and medical items through the establishment of centers like the Advanced Functional Fabrics of America. Additionally, schemes to grow a skilled workforce both at factory and R&D levels will be valuable.

Image classification of the furnace bed height in recovery boilers, TAPPI Journal July 2026
ABSTRACT: The goal of this study is to develop an approach for classifying char bed height in a recovery boiler during operation. The resulting classified images form a dataset that can be used by the mill to support operational improvements. The study integrates data from the digester, evaporation plant, recovery boiler, and recausticizing plant, along with the classified image data. A convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained on bed camera images that were manually annotated to classify furnace bed height. The model was then used to generate a binary bedheight parameter over a 16-month period, and an extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model was applied to identify relationships with operating parameters across the recovery cycle. The outcomes of this research may offer deeper insights into the processes underlying bed dynamics. Ultimately, the developed system may serve as a tool for optimizing bed conditions and supporting stable combustion.

Editorial: Changing of the guard: Dr. Arthur Ragauskas assumes TAPPI Journal editor-in-chief role, TAPPI Journal January 2026
TAPPI is pleased to announce that Dr. Arthur J. Ragauskas has assumed the editor-in-chief role for TAPPI Journal. Ragauskas, who is a professor at University of Tennessee (UT) in Knoxville, TN, has been a member of the TAPPI Journal Editorial Board since 2011 and is a TAPPI Fellow, as well as recipient of the TAPPI Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal Award, among his many accomplishments. As a member of the Editorial Board, Ragauskas has curated eight special issues on a range of topics, including nanocellulose, lignocellulose, lignin valorization, and the forest biorefinery.

Effects of variability of wood chip composition on recovery cycle operation, TAPPI Journal January 2026
ABSTRACT: Fluctuations in wood chip properties in kraft pulp mills, which often follow seasonal patterns, can lead to changes or disruptions in the operation of the recovery cycle whereby the root causes are not immediately obvious. In some cases, these changes are attributed to operational adjustments in the digester or brownstock washing areas resulting from the variability in wood characteristics. Varying wood chip characteristics that have the most significant impact on the recovery cycle operation include the content of non-process elements (NPEs), extractives, and properties influenced by chip storage conditions. Elevated levels of NPEs, often associated with a higher influx of wood bark into the digester, can negatively affect the entire recovery cycle. Increased levels of chlorine and potassium can lead to severe fouling and corrosion in the recovery boiler. Higher concentrations of silicon, aluminum, phosphorus, magnesium and calcium in the chips may accelerate scaling in the evaporation plant, impair dregs and lime mud settling and filtering, reduce lime mud solids content and lime availability, and increase the amounts of dregs, grits, and purged lime mud. This technical review provides an overview of the most significant effects that changes in wood chip quality can potentially exert on various processes within the kraft recovery cycle.

The effect of Stachys floridana Shuttlew.ex Benth extract as an additive on the chemical properties of chitosan biodegradable film, TAPPI Journal June 2025
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to explore chitosan with Stachys floridana Shuttlew. ex Benth (SFSB) extract as an additive to prepare an active film. The effects of the SFSB extract on the physical, antioxidant, and bacteriostatic properties of chitosan biodegradable films were studied. The results showed that the addition of SFSB extract significantly improved the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the film, and its biodegradation rate increased rapidly. Compared to the control film, the water solubility was lower at 19.40%, the expansion degree was higher at 288.90%, the water vapor permeability (WVP) was 0.364 g·mm/(m²·d·kPa), the surface hydrophobicity increased, and the mechanical strength was also improved. The contact angle increased to 89.3°. In addition, as the amount of SFSB increased, the thermal stability of chitosan-Stachys floridana Shuttlew. ex Benth (CS-SFSB) films also increased significantly, and their ultraviolet (UV) blocking ability was gradually enhanced. The results indicate that CS-SFSB has potential as a food packaging material.

Optimizing OCC refining with defloccing, TAPPI Journal April 2025
ABSTRACT: Subjecting pulp to a high shear zone immediately after refining results in more efficient refining. This phenomenon was originally observed to benefit softwood pulp refining. It was attributed to floc reduction based on floc measurements in mill refiners and the observation of reduced headbox plugging. Hence, this phenomenon has been termed “defloccing.” The present work shows this technology also benefits refining of North American old corrugated containers (OCC). The combined results of several mill trials with OCC defloccing demonstrate the interactions between OCC refining intensity, defloccing technology, and other state-of-the-art refining improvements. At the same refining intensity, defloccing OCC on 100% recycled machines increases OCC refining efficiency by 15%, with greater efficiency improvement on machines that use softwood as well as OCC. Furthermore, it is shown that the benefits of defloccing are additive to refining improvements made in the refining zone of a refiner plate. Most OCC refiner plate designs can therefore benefit from the addition of a defloccing feature.

Comparing a linear transfer function-noise model and a neural network to model boiler bank fouling in a kraft recovery boiler, TAPPI Journal, July 2024
ABSTRACT: Boiler bank fouling reduces heat transfer efficiency in kraft recovery boilers. Here, we model the relationships between boiler parameters and boiler bank pressure drop, an indicator of fouling, based on recovery boiler operating data. We compared two models: an autoregressive integrated exogenous (ARIX) model and a feedforward neural network. The ARIX model better simulates boiler bank pressure drop compared to the neural network (R2 of 0.64 vs. 0.58). Based on the ARIX model, we identified six boiler parameters that significantly influence boiler bank fouling and their relative contributions. Finally, we demonstrate how the models can simulate boiler bank pressure drop given artificial perturbations in boiler parameters.

Considerations in managing wastewater odor at pulp and paper operations, TAPPI Journal March 2022
ABSTRACT: Many pulp and paper mills are, at least periodically, faced with the release of odors that can migrate offsite and be considered a nuisance by nearby residents. At chemical pulp mills, perceptible odors associated with reduced sulfur compounds (RSCs) are common, many of which are highly perceptible owing to their low odor thresholds. As releases of RSCs and other odorous substances from production processes are progressively controlled, the proportional contribution from wastewater treatment systems to areal odors can increase. This review paper summarizes important fundamentals of odor generation, source identification, and control. Common odorous substances are identified, and mechanisms for their generation are summarized. Approaches for measuring odorous substances are detailed to enable more effective management, and various odor control strategies are discussed.
