Dissolution of wood components during hot water extraction of spruce, TAPPI Journal May 2023
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to investigate the autohydrolysis of softwood, which is the main chemical operation in both hot water extraction and steam explosion. Control of the process and monitoring its course were ensured by the careful choice of experimental setup and conditions: a milled spruce material was extracted in a small flow-through reactor to minimize degradation of the dissolved material and to enable analysis of the resulting liquors extracted at selected time points. The obtained liquid and solid fractions were analyzed for sugar composition and acetic acid concentration. The results showed that partially degraded hemicelluloses were extracted; hemicelluloses side chains were cleaved off and detected as monomers, while deacetylation was limited. Chain scissions of cellulose were observed as a result of autohydrolysis.

Examination of scoring parameters of corrugated fiberboard, TAPPI Journal August 2026
ABSTRACT: One of the less interrogated aspects of corrugated packaging are scoring and scoring profiles, the intentional localized crushing of flutes to accommodate package folding and closure. This study explores the effect of scoring parameters on box compression test strength (BCT) of two balanced corrugated boards. Scoring differences produced BCT that varied by 10% for one board and less for the other board. Parameters from 4-point bending of scored specimens showed some correlation with BCT, while eccentricity and torsion parameters had less correlation. Different scores produced BCT differences that were not strongly predicted by most standard tests in the current study, implying other tests may be needed to examine the actual boundary conditions on a box during compression. In a few cases, aggressive scoring produced cracked score lines, and those containers had lower BCT than containers with uncracked score lines.

Investigating the causes of severe economizer tube thinning in a spent sulfite liquor (SSL) boiler, TAPPI Journal August 2026
ABSTRACT: In this study, the causes of tube thinning in the economizer of an ammonia-based spent sulfite liquor (SSL) boiler in a Canadian pulp mill are investigated. The tube thinning was most severe in the upper tube rows of the lowest economizer sections where the tube surface temperature ranges between about 180°C and 210°C. The location, the temperature range, and the results of a tube failure analysis indicate that some form of corrosion- erosion is the main cause for the tube thinning. The process is likely initiated by the formation of potassium bisulfate in tube deposits. We hypothesize that some areas in the economizer, including gaps in tube shields, have allowed for temporary buildup of deposits that were not fully removed by sootblowing. Potassium bisulfate is highly hygroscopic, so it readily absorbs moisture, forming an acidic solution leading to corrosion. The corrosion products are removed by the erosive effects of high velocity gas movement, causing the tube thinning. The high-speed fluid flow may be a result of sootblower action and/or enhanced flue gas velocity due to channeling. The tube thinning eventually leads to perforation and leakage.

Editorial: New research sheds light on critical processes in the recovery cycle, TAPPI Journal July
The chemical recovery cycle has been called the backbone of a kraft pulp mill, making modern paper production both economically and environmentally sustainable. It regenerates pulping chemicals (primarily sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide) used to separate wood fibers, allowing them to be reused rather than continuously replaced, while also recovering energy by burning the organic components of black liquor to produce steam and electricity that supply much of the mill’s power needs. In addition, the recovery cycle minimizes waste, reduces emissions, and recovers valuable by-products, creating a highly efficient closedloop system. Without this process, chemical costs, energy consumption, and environmental impacts would increase, making large-scale kraft pulping significantly less economical and sustainable.

Modern NCG practice, TAPPI Journal July 2026
ABSTRACT: New innovations have been put in operation for collection and handling systems of noncondensable gases (NCGs) in modern kraft pulp mills. This work investigates technologies in new pulp mills that aim to achieve the benefits of odor-free processes while enhancing chemical circulation within the mill. It describes and discusses both past and current systems for collecting and handling NCGs. The mills studied have designed and implemented their NCG systems within the past 10 to 15 years. New innovations have emerged, offering promising methods to further reduce occasional sulfurous odor emissions from the kraft process. These methods explore pretreatment and sulfuric gas stream reuse options in process units where these gases are generated or during the transportation of these side streams to their final destruction site. Using modern practices outlined in this paper, malodorous gases can be collected to the extent that a kraft pulp mill is essentially odor-free pending operator errors or major equipment malfunctions. One of the difficult aspects is that NCG systems in kraft mills are often designed case-by-case, as well as by various equipment vendors and with varying numbers of destruction sites. The actual detailed design depends on the chosen layout, process configuration depending on individual equipment purchased, and even on the design practices of individual suppliers.

The effect of Stachys floridana Shuttlew.ex Benth extract as an additive on the chemical properties of chitosan biodegradable film, TAPPI Journal June 2025
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to explore chitosan with Stachys floridana Shuttlew. ex Benth (SFSB) extract as an additive to prepare an active film. The effects of the SFSB extract on the physical, antioxidant, and bacteriostatic properties of chitosan biodegradable films were studied. The results showed that the addition of SFSB extract significantly improved the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the film, and its biodegradation rate increased rapidly. Compared to the control film, the water solubility was lower at 19.40%, the expansion degree was higher at 288.90%, the water vapor permeability (WVP) was 0.364 g·mm/(m²·d·kPa), the surface hydrophobicity increased, and the mechanical strength was also improved. The contact angle increased to 89.3°. In addition, as the amount of SFSB increased, the thermal stability of chitosan-Stachys floridana Shuttlew. ex Benth (CS-SFSB) films also increased significantly, and their ultraviolet (UV) blocking ability was gradually enhanced. The results indicate that CS-SFSB has potential as a food packaging material.

A feasibility study of using the organic Rankine cycle for power generation from the flue gases of recovery boilers, TAPPI Journal August 2022
ABSTRACT: Almost 415 tons/h of flue gases with a temperature of 160°C are released to the atmosphere from the recovery boiler of a pulp mill with capacity of 1000 air dried (a.d.) metric tons of pulp per day. This is a large waste heat stream that can be used to generate power, to decrease the operating costs of a pulp mill, and to save carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In this work, the feasibility of using an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with ammonia as the working fluid to generate power from the flue gases of recovery boilers is studied. CHEMCAD and Taguchi methods are used for simulation of the process and for optimization of operating conditions, respectively. The temperature of the ammonia and flue gases at the exit of evaporator, exit pressure of the pump and turbine, and the degree of subcooling of ammonia at the exit of the condenser are five operating parameters that are manipulated to optimize the process. Three different scenarios are defined: minimizing the net power cost, maximizing the ORC efficiency, and maximizing the net profit. Different aspects of these scenarios, such as net power generation, cost, efficiency, and CO2 emission savings are discussed, and optimum operating conditions are reported.

Causes of poor dregs settling in a green liquor clarifier, TAPPI Journal August 2022
ABSTRACT: A study was conducted to examine the most likely parameters responsible for poor dregs settling at a kraft mill over a 2.5-year period, using multivariate data analysis (MVDA) and machine learning (ML) techniques. The dregs settling behavior seems to be seasonally influenced, implying that wood quality variation can be a factor. The results from the MVDA/ML analysis show that poor dregs settling is correlated to incomplete combustion and/or low load conditions in the recovery boiler, low sulfidity in the causticizing plant, and high flow in the green liquor•weak wash cycle. Compositions of dregs and black liquor were also examined to identify correlations with impaired dregs settling. The results show that poor dregs settling strongly correlates with high silicon (Si) content in dregs and moderately correlates with high iron (Fe) and high aluminum (Al) contents, and with low bulk density in dregs. For mills that experience dregs settling or green liquor filtering issues, regular compositional analyses of dregs, green liquor, weak wash, and black liquor are recommended in order to monitor the dynamics of silicon and other constituents in the recovery cycle.

Utilization of kraft pulp mill residuals, TAPPI Journal February 2022
ABSTRACT: Kraft pulp mills produce on average about 100 kg of solid residuals per metric ton of pulp produced. The main types of mill waste are sludge from wastewater treatment plants, ash from hog fuel boilers, dregs, grits, and lime mud from causticizing plants and lime dust from lime kilns. Of these, about half is disposed of in landfills, which highlights the need and potential for waste recycling and utilization. Sludge is either incinerated in hog fuel boilers to generate steam and power or used in various forms of land application, including land spreading, composting, or as an additive for landfill or mine waste covers. The majority of hog fuel boiler ash and causticizing plant residues is landfilled. Alkaline residuals can be conditioned for use in land application, manufacture of construction materials, and production of aggregates for road work. This technical review summarizes residuals utilization methods that have been applied in pulp and paper mills at demonstration- or full-scale, and therefore may act as a guide for mill managers and operators whose goal is to diminish the costs and the environmental impact of waste management.

Utilization of palm fiber as papermaking materials: Microscopic structure and chemical pulping, TAPPI Journal October 2022
ABSTRACT: The microscopic structure and pulping properties of palm fiber were explored. Soda cooking and sulfate cooking were conducted and compared in terms of physical strength of the obtained pulps. Sulfate pulp showed better performance than soda pulp, as indicated by the 23% higher tensile index, 49% higher tear index, and 36% higher burst index. To further elevate physical strength, long fibered pulp (LFP), namely commercial softwood sulfate pulp, was mixed with sulfate pulp of palm fiber at levels from 20% to 50%. At the blend level of 50%, tensile index of 52.13 Nœm/g, tear index of 15.63 mNœm2/g, and burst index of 3.42 kPaœm2/g were attained. The lignin in spent liquor from pulping was isolated and characterized. Soda lignin of palm fiber was mainly composed of guaiacyl and syringyl units, and showed weight-average molecular weight of 3616 g/mol.
