The Shendye-Fleming OBA Index for paper and paperboard, TAPPI Journal March 2022

ABSTRACT: We are proposing a new one-dimensional scale to calculate the effects of optical brightening agents (OBA) on the bluish appearance of paper. This index is separate from brightness and whiteness indices. In the paper industry, one-dimensional scales are widely used for determining optical properties of paper and paperboard. Whiteness, tint, brightness, yellowness, and opacity are the most common optical properties of paper and paperboard. Most of the papers have a blue cast generated by addition of OBA or blue dyes. This blue cast is given because of the human perception that bluer is whiter, up to a certain limit. To quantify this effect, it is necessary to determine how much blue cast paper and paperboard have. As the printing industry follows the ISO 3664 Standard for viewing, which has a D50 light source, this also plays a very important role in showing a blue cast. Color perception is based on light source and light reflected from an object. The ultraviolet (UV) component in D50 interacts with OBA to provide a reflection in the blue region of the visible spectrum. Use of a UV blocking filter results in measurements without the effect of emission in the blue region. This difference is used in determining the OBA effect in the visible range of the paper. This equation is known as the Shendye-Fleming OBA Index.

Considerations in managing wastewater odor at pulp and paper operations, TAPPI Journal March 2022

ABSTRACT: Many pulp and paper mills are, at least periodically, faced with the release of odors that can migrate offsite and be considered a nuisance by nearby residents. At chemical pulp mills, perceptible odors associated with reduced sulfur compounds (RSCs) are common, many of which are highly perceptible owing to their low odor thresholds. As releases of RSCs and other odorous substances from production processes are progressively controlled, the proportional contribution from wastewater treatment systems to areal odors can increase. This review paper summarizes important fundamentals of odor generation, source identification, and control. Common odorous substances are identified, and mechanisms for their generation are summarized. Approaches for measuring odorous substances are detailed to enable more effective management, and various odor control strategies are discussed.

Development of paper quality parameter measurement in China, TAPPI Journal May 2022

ABSTRACT: Paper quality parameters are important indicators of paper production, such as paper moisture, basis weight, ash content, strength, and so on. This study focuses on the online measurement methods and development of paper basis weight, moisture, and ash measuring. First, the measurable paper parameters and quality control system products in China are analyzed. Then, the basis weight measurement methods, accuracy, and development are given in the range of 10~1000 g/m2. Third, the distinction between infrared and microwave methods for moisture measurement is discussed. Finally, the ash measurement is introduced. Production and consumption of tissue paper in China have continually increased during the past decade. Near-infrared light technology is mature for the measurement of paper parameters in the range of 10~200 g/m2 basis weight. However, the near-infrared online measurement of tissue paper is not widely used, and few tissue paper lines are equipped with this type of quality control system in China. Therefore, technology for near-infrared measurement of basis weight has a great potential market in the field of tissue paper production. This article analyzes the future development trend of near-infrared light in tissue paper basis weight measurement and summarizes the difficulties in near-infrared light measurement of tissue paper basis weight.

Effect of high sulfate content on viscosity of recovery boiler molten smelt, TAPPI Journal March 2024

ABSTRACT: A systematic study was conducted to examine the effect of high sulfate content on the freezing temperature of molten smelt and how this may contribute to the formation of viscous jellyroll smelt in recovery boilers. The results show that even for recovery boilers with a smelt reduction as low as 70%, the sulfate content in smelt has no or little effect on smelt freezing temperature, and hence, on molten smelt fluidity. The perceived adverse effect of high sulfate content on smelt fluidity and on jellyroll smelt formation comes from the high sulfate content in deposits that have fallen from the upper furnace. Fallen deposits may or may not form jellyroll smelt, depending on whether or not they can melt and be well-mixed with molten smelt by the time they reach the smelt spouts. It is not the high sulfate content in smelt resulting from the low smelt reduction efficiency that makes molten smelt viscous and forms jellyroll smelt, but rather, it is the incomplete melting of fallen deposits that results in one of the proposed mechanisms for jellyroll smelt formation.

Enhancing tissue wet pressing performance and dry end material efficiency for cost savings, TAPPI Journal May 2024

ABSTRACT: The steadily growing global tissue paper demand lays a foundation for new technologies targeting tissue production optimization, as well as improved material and time efficiency. Tissue making is an especially energy-intensive field of paper industry, creating unique demands for performance in wet pressing and drying processes to cut energy usage. Intelligent roll solutions offer new tools for tissue making to achieve these goals. These tools aim at improving press nip, moisture, and tension profiles; reeling nip and parent roll hardness profiles; rewinder runnability; and end product web handling characteristics in converting. Intelligent rolls can be utilized in all the main processes and positions on tissue production lines. With these tools, production cost reductions and energy savings can be obtained by optimizing the press nip-to-Yankee cylinder contact, avoiding moisture profile errors requiring overdrying with the Yankee hood and reducing reeling/winding broke under low nip load conditions typical to tissue windups. The intelligent roll system consists of a helically mounted force or temperature sensors, roll covers, measurement electronics, digital radio transmission, and a receiver system connected to a user interface or the mill automation system. What distinguishes these implementations is that no layout changes or added external measurement devices are required, helping to fit into compact tissue machine environments, regardless of the equipment type • traditional, hybrid, or through-air drying (TAD) concept. In tissue processing equipment, the optimal positions for these rolls are press nip rollers, reeling cylinders, rewinder or converting line paper lead rolls, or rewinder winding drums. In addition to these, temperature profile measurements are utilized, with the main application being the sheet temperature profile detection after Yankee drying for moisture profile and drying process optimization.

Editorial: New coating grades require new tests: Barrier performance inside the package, TAPPI Journal November 2024

The TAPPI Journal special Coating issue is an annual issue that focuses on paper coating and coated papers. It is drawn from presentations at TAPPICon and from other submissions on the topic of paper coating. The TAPPICon 2024 Coating track was rich in high-quality technical content. In fact, the papers were of such significance that Coating members of the TAPPI Journal Editorial Board, which include me, Gregg Reed, and Gregory Welsch, decided that a second paper coating-related special issue would be appropriate for the TAPPI Journal editorial calendar. In addition to the current issue on Barrier Coating Testing, there will be another issue on Coating Fundamentals in early 2025.
