Recycling performance of softwood and hardwood unbleached kraft pulps for packaging papers, TAPPI Journal February 2023

ABSTRACT: The scope of this work is to evaluate the recyclability potential of hardwood and softwood unbleached kraft pulps, leading to a sound basis for comparison and even to support a decision about fibers accord-ing to the performance achieved. The influence of successive recycling cycles (up to 10 cycles) on the fiber morphol-ogy, pulp suspension drainability, water retention capacity, and handsheet mechanical properties were studied for Eucalyptus globulus and Pinus sylvestris unbleached kraft pulps. The performance of these pulps as linerboard and corrugating medium for packaging was also evaluated. The requirements for brown kraftliner and for high perfor-mance recycled fluting grades is preserved for E. globulus pulp during all 10 recycling cycles, evidenced by the mod-erate decrease of burst index and crush resistance index and by the short-span compression index, whereas the P. sylvestris pulp loses this rating after the second cycle. These results strongly support the higher performance of E. globulus pulp for recycling as compared with softwood kraft pulp from the perspective of packaging papers.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has exposed lagging investments for advanced and agile manufacturing in developed economies in the recent past. Because of this situation, governments have begun taking policy initiatives, such as boosting support for infrastructure in the United States, creating a National Mission on Technical Textiles in India, and many initiatives in the United Kingdom and European Union to boost clean energy, fight climate change, and encourage sustainable manufacturing.

In this column, we would like to recognize the contributions to TAPPI and TAPPI Journal made by Dr. Mahendra Doshi, who passed away in April. A long-time member of TAPPI and a TAPPI Journal Editorial Board Member for many years, he is recognized for his research in screening system analysis, wax, and stickies removal in the field of recycling.

A novel dimensionless index for optimizing the thermo-hydraulic performance of steam condensation in horizontal rotating channels of a multi-channel cylinder dryer

ABSTRACT: The comprehensive performance of steam condensation in horizontal rotating channels, which involves a trade-off between heat transfer enhancement and flow resistance, lacks a unified evaluation criterion. This deficiency is particularly critical for applications such as a multi-channel cylinder dryer (MCD) in paper machines, where rotational operation enhances drying efficiency. To address this gap, this study introduces a novel dimensionless index, W/Eu, defined as the ratio of the dimensionless heat transfer coefficient (W) to the dimensionless pressure drop (Eu), thereby taking into account both heat transfer and flow resistance characteristics comprehensively. A functional relationship for this index was established with respect to channel spacing (Wr) and steam mass flux (G), followed by a theoretical optimization analysis.

Editorial: Advancing barrier science and protective materials: The 2025 winners of TAPPI Journal Best Research Paper Award and Honghi Tran Prize, TAPPI Journal April 2026

At the end of each year, the TAPPI Journal Editorial Board Members nominate papers for consideration as recipient of the Best Research Paper and Honghi Tran Prize from that year, looking for outstanding contributions that push the science and engineering boundaries of fiber-based materials. For 2025, the Board nominated 10 papers and evaluated each nomination in terms of scientific merit, innovation, creativity, and clarity. After voting on the papers earlier this year, the Editorial Board chose two co-winning papers for this distinct honor.

Prediction of residual calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the lime kiln of a kraft pulp mill

ABSTRACT: In a kraft pulp mill, the rotary lime kiln is responsible for converting calcium carbonate (CaCO3) into calcium oxide (CaO) to be reused in the causticizing plant. An important parameter of the calcination efficiency and the product quality is the amount of CaCO3 not converted to CaO, commonly defined as residual carbonate. This parameter is usually determined through laboratory analysis, which introduces delays in process control and limits the ability to make timely operational adjustments.

Aging and degradation of oil and grease barrier papers coated with bio-based starch–wax emulsion

ABSTRACT: The long-term performance and stability of bio-based barrier coatings are critical for sustainable packaging. In this study, the aging and degradation of a biobased starch–wax emulsion coating were examined on two different base papers. Coated samples were stored for 8 months at 23°C and 50% relative humidity (RH) in their original reels to minimize external exposure and isolate internal aging effects. Multiple aging intervals were analyzed using advanced methods to assess both chemical composition and physical structure.

Kraft pulp viscosity as a predictor of paper strength: Its uses and abuses, TAPPI Journal October 2023

ABSTRACT: For bleached kraft pulps, two factors govern paper strength: the individual fiber strength, and the bond strength that adheres the individual fibers together in the paper matrix. Inherent fiber strength is related to the length of the carbohydrate polymers, also known as the degree of polymerization (DP). Average DP (DP) is inferred by performing pulp viscosity measurements. Under certain circumstances during kraft pulping and bleaching, the average polymer lengths can be shortened, resulting in lower pulp viscosity, and may indicate fiber damage. Fiber damage typically manifests itself as a reduction in tear strength for well-bonded handsheets.This paper will review the literature on how pulp viscosity can predict paper/fiber strength and how it can be used as a diagnostic tool. It can be a means to monitor pulp quality during pulping and bleaching, as well as to alert when such operations approach a critical threshold. However, viscosity losses must be carefully and judiciously analyzed. Like most diagnostic tools, viscosity measurements can be misused and abused, which can lead to incorrect inferences about intrinsic fiber strength. This review will also cover these misuses. The overall goal is to provide the papermaker a better understanding of what pulp viscosity is, how it correlates to potential sheet strength, and what its limitations are. It will be illustrated that when pulp viscosity drops below a critical value, it will indicate an appreciable deterioration in the paper’s tear and tensile strength.
