Development of paper quality parameter measurement in China, TAPPI Journal May 2022

ABSTRACT: Paper quality parameters are important indicators of paper production, such as paper moisture, basis weight, ash content, strength, and so on. This study focuses on the online measurement methods and development of paper basis weight, moisture, and ash measuring. First, the measurable paper parameters and quality control system products in China are analyzed. Then, the basis weight measurement methods, accuracy, and development are given in the range of 10~1000 g/m2. Third, the distinction between infrared and microwave methods for moisture measurement is discussed. Finally, the ash measurement is introduced. Production and consumption of tissue paper in China have continually increased during the past decade. Near-infrared light technology is mature for the measurement of paper parameters in the range of 10~200 g/m2 basis weight. However, the near-infrared online measurement of tissue paper is not widely used, and few tissue paper lines are equipped with this type of quality control system in China. Therefore, technology for near-infrared measurement of basis weight has a great potential market in the field of tissue paper production. This article analyzes the future development trend of near-infrared light in tissue paper basis weight measurement and summarizes the difficulties in near-infrared light measurement of tissue paper basis weight.

Black liquor evaporators upgrade — How many effects?, TAPPI Journal April 2023

ABSTRACT: Black liquor evaporation is generally the most energy intensive unit operation in a pulp and paper manufacturing facility. The black liquor evaporators can represent a third or more of the total mill steam usage, followed by the paper machine and digester. When considering an evaporator rebuild or a new system, the key design question is how many effects to include in the system. The number of effects is the main design feature that deter-mines the economy of the system and the steam usage for a given evaporation capacity. A higher number of effects increases steam economy and reduces energy cost to a point, but additional effects also have higher initial capital cost and increased power costs. This research paper uses life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) as a method to determine the optimum number of evaporator effects for a new evaporator system. The same basic principles and method can also apply to existing evaporator rebuild projects.

Pareto-based design of experiments for identifying and comparing optimum sealing parameters of heat sealing applications in packaging machines, TAPPI Journal June 2023

ABSTRACT: Sealing is one of the most important process steps in industrial packaging, because the sealed seam is the most sensitive section of a package in terms of quality. For this reason, a major focus in flexible packaging is the sealing process, and among this, heat sealing is the most frequently used technology. In detail, applications of heat sealing processes are confronted with four conflicting objectives: increasing seam quality, reducing dwell time, reducing sealing temperature, and increasing process robustness towards varying conditions. Typical problems, such as identification of the optimum process parameters or selection of the most appropriate packaging film, are subject to these conflicting objectives. This paper presents a recently published design of experiments for characterizing and comparing heat sealing properties of packaging films based on a multi-objective optimization algorithm. The approach provides easy-to-read charts showing all optimum sealing parameters with regard to the four essential objectives of heat sealing: seam quality, dwell time, sealing temperature, and process robustness. Three case studies show exemplary applications of the new approach: 1) analyzing transport damages of beverage powder packages; 2) identifying and comparing optimum sealing parameter of a standard, mono-material, and fiber based packaging film regarding tightness and visual properties of the produced sachets; and 3) analyzing the effect of additional aluminum layers on sealing characteristics regarding hot-tack.The new design of experiments may provide the basis of a standard test method for the identification of optimal sealing parameters in the heat sealing processes.

Paper bending stiffness and web tension measurement from a running web using a vacuum and computer imaging, TAPPI Journal May 2023

ABSTRACT: A novel method for measuring the bending stiffness of paper online during manufacturing is introduced. The method uses photometric stereo imaging to detect the shape of the deflection surface caused by a controllable pressure difference over the paper’s surfaces. The hardware for the measurement is based on a combination of two existing sensors, which has accelerated and facilitated the development of the implementation. The deflection and loads are tied together by the governing differential equation for the bending of an orthotropic elastic plate with selected simplifications. An approach to resolve material parameters and in-plane loads without knowledge of traditional boundary conditions is suggested. The presented method was tested in a paper mill during manufacturing. For bending stiffnesses measured online, correlation coefficients 0.88 and 0.92 were obtained compared to state-of-the-art laboratory measurements. However, the results gained from a moving web are noisy and the data requires correction of the slope and an off-set. Although several issues remain to be resolved before the method can be considered as an accurate measurement for industrial use, the theoretical background, the performance of online implementation, and the results are promising. Possible causes for the observed discrepancies and the future development of the method are discussed.

Kraft pulp viscosity as a predictor of paper strength: Its uses and abuses, TAPPI Journal October 2023

ABSTRACT: For bleached kraft pulps, two factors govern paper strength: the individual fiber strength, and the bond strength that adheres the individual fibers together in the paper matrix. Inherent fiber strength is related to the length of the carbohydrate polymers, also known as the degree of polymerization (DP). Average DP (DP) is inferred by performing pulp viscosity measurements. Under certain circumstances during kraft pulping and bleaching, the average polymer lengths can be shortened, resulting in lower pulp viscosity, and may indicate fiber damage. Fiber damage typically manifests itself as a reduction in tear strength for well-bonded handsheets. This paper will review the literature on how pulp viscosity can predict paper/fiber strength and how it can be used as a diagnostic tool. It can be a means to monitor pulp quality during pulping and bleaching, as well as to alert when such operations approach a critical threshold. However, viscosity losses must be carefully and judiciously analyzed. Like most diagnostic tools, viscosity measurements can be misused and abused, which can lead to incorrect inferences about intrinsic fiber strength. This review will also cover these misuses. The overall goal is to provide the papermaker a better understanding of what pulp viscosity is, how it correlates to potential sheet strength, and what its limitations are. It will be illustrated that when pulp viscosity drops below a critical value, it will indicate an appreciable deterioration in the paper’s tear and tensile strength.

The role of hornification in the deterioration mechanism of physical properties of unrefined eucalyptus fibers during paper recycling, TAPPI Journal February 2024

ABSTRACT: Physical properties of cellulosic paper deteriorate significantly during paper recycling, which hinders the sustainable development of the paper industry. This work investigates the property deterioration mechanism and the role of hornification in the recycling process of unrefined eucalyptus fibers. The results showed that during the recycling process, the hornification gradually deepened, the fiber width gradually decreased, and the physical properties of the paper also gradually decreased. After five cycles of reuse, the relative bonding area decreased by 17.6%, while the relative bonding force decreased by 1.8%. Further results indicated that the physical property deterioration of the paper was closely related to the decrease of fiber bonding area. The fiber bonding area decreased linearly with the reduction of re-swollen fiber width during paper recycling. Re-swollen fiber width was closely related to the hornification. Hornification mainly reduces the bonding area of unrefined eucalyptus fiber rather than the bonding force. The work elucidates the role of hornification in the recycling process of unrefined eucalyptus fibers and the deterioration mechanism of paper physical properties, which will be helpful to control the property deterioration of paper and achieve a longer life cycle.

Study on the effect of aluminum diethyl phosphinate in synergy with ammonium polyphosphate on the flame retardancy of cellulose paper, TAPPI Journal April 2025

ABSTRACT: This paper involved the synergistic incorporation of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and diethyl aluminum phosphinate (AlPi) as flame-retardant fillers for producing flame-retardant paper. The research revealed that APPs were square particles with a smooth surface, and their solubility was 0.29 g/100 mL at 20°C, which increased to 4.12 g/100 mL at 60°C. The surfaces of AlPis were rough and irregular. The solubility of AlPi was 0.023 g/100 mL at 20°C, and the solubility remained stable when the temperature increased. The addition of AlPi had a minor influence on the pulp beating degree. The tensile strength of kraft/APP/AlPi decreased with the increase of the AlPi addition. For a paper with 20 wt% APP and 0 wt% AlPi, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value was 27.2%, and it burned completely at the eighth second during vertical combustion. When the AlPi additive content increased to 20 wt%, its LOI value increased to 32.2%, and the vertical combustion self-extinguished as soon as the flame was removed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the char residue of the kraft/APP/AlPi had a more complete fiber network structure than that of kraft/APP. The Raman spectroscopy indicated that the area ratio of the D (amorphous phase; disordered graphite vibration) band to the G (crystal phase; graphite carbon vibration) band (ID/ IG) ratio of kraft/APP/AlPi was lower than that of kraft/APP, meaning that the graphitization degree of the char residue of kraft/APP/AlPi was higher than that of kraft/APP, which indicated the kraft/APP/AlPi had better flame retardancy.

Leveraging mill-wide big data sets for process and qualityimprovement in paperboard production, TAPPI Journal December 2024

Authors: Jianzhong Fu and Peter W. Hart | TAPPI J. 15(5): 309(2016) - ABSTRACT: The MWV mill in Covington, VA, USA, experienced a long term trend of increasing episodes of paper indents that resulted in significant quantities of internal rejects and production downtime. When traditional troubleshooting techniques failed to resolve the problem, big data analysis techniques were employed to help deter-mine root causes of this negative and increasingly frequent situation. Nearly 6000 operating variables were selected for a deep dive, multi-year analysis after reviewing mill-wide process logs and 60000+ PI tags (data points) collected from one of the major data historian systems at the MWV Covington mill. Nine billion data points were collected from November 2011 to August 2014. Strategies and methods were developed to format, clean, classify, and sort the various data sets to compensate for process lag time and to align timestamps, as well as to rank potential causes or indicators. GE Intelligent Platforms software was employed to develop decision trees for root cause analysis. Insights and possible correlations that were previously invisible or ignored were obtained across the mill, from pulp-ing, bleaching, and chemical recovery to the papermaking process. Several findings led the mill to revise selected process targets and to reconsider a step change in the drying process. These changes have exhibited significant impacts on the mill’s product quality, cost, and market performance. Mill-wide communications of the identified results helped transform the findings into executable actions. Several projects were initiated.

Review of coating cracking and barrier integrity on paperboard substrates, TAPPI JournalDecember 2024

Authors: Joel C. Panek and Peter W. Hart | TAPPI J. 21(11): 589(2022) - ABSTRACT: Barrier packaging formats are major growth areas for the pulp and paper industry. It is technically challenging to maintain barrier properties during converting and end-use applications. Improved manufacturing capabilities and coating formulation knowledge will help maintain barrier integrity and enable growth of barrier products in challenging applications. These improvements will accelerate product development and commercialization, and allow faster response to product performance issues such as cracking. The literature on coating cracking provides knowledge mostly on the effects of coating formulations and to a lesser extent on substrate effects. Despite a large number of publications dedicated to coating failures, the approach to improve coating cracking remains empirical, and the transferability between studies and to real life applications has not been well established. Model development that successfully predicts commercial performance is in its infancy. However, some of these simplified models do a fairly good job predicting experimental data. The current work reviews the state of understanding as regards coating and barrier cracking and highlights the need for more research on cracking and barrier integrity.
