Z-directional testing of paperboard in combined tensile and compression loading, TAPPI Journal May 2024

ABSTRACT: The out-of-plane properties of paperboard are important in several converting applications such as printing, sealing, creasing, and calendering. A juxtaposed tensile and compression curve in the z direction (ZD) will, however, appear to have a kink or discontinuity at 0 stress. The purpose of the present work is to capture the continuous transition between tension and compression and to increase the understanding of the complex ZD properties of paperboard by cyclic testing. In this attempt to unify the ZD tensile and compressive behavior of paperboard, samples were laminated to the testing platens using heat seal laminate film. The method for adhering the samples was compared to samples that were laminated and glued to the testing platens. The edge effects of the cutting method were evaluated in compression testing with samples not attached to the testing platens. The flat slope seen in the initial part of the pure compression curve disappeared when the samples were laminated to the testing platens. The flat slope was instead replaced by a continuous response in the transition across 0 N. The stiffness in the transition region resembled the response in tensile testing. When the testing is cycled, the material exhibits a history dependence. Starting the cycle in either compression or tensile will show an effect on the stiffness at the transition, as well as the compressive stiffness. However, the ultimate tensile strength is unaffected.

Orifice geometry as a tool for evaluating extensional flow resistance of barrier coating colors, TAPPI Journal November 2024

ABSTRACT: Knowledge of extensional flow behavior of coating colors can be beneficial for improving runnability and eliminating defects in various coating processes. The current work evaluates the use of an orifice geometry attached to a commercial capillary viscometer as a tool to obtain extensional flow properties of barrier coating dispersions. By measuring the pressure drop across the orifice as a function of flow velocity, the method presents the flow resistance as Euler number at industrially relevant high deformation rates. The results agree with the earlier results obtained with a capillary entrance pressure loss technique. The type of polymer additive is shown to control the extensional flow resistance, with high molecular weight linear flexible polymers such as polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) having highest impact. The orifice method offers advantages over other approaches, including the need for only a small sample amount, ease of measurement, and access to high deformation rates.

Factors affecting phosphorus uptake/dissolution during slaking and causticizing, TAPPI Journal March 2024

ABSTRACT: Hydroxide is regenerated in the recovery cycle of kraft pulp mills by the addition of lime (CaO) to green liquor. Phosphate in green liquor can react with the lime during slaking/causticizing. Total titratable alkali (TTA), sulfidity, the concentration of phosphate in the green liquor, temperature, and the liming ratio were all variables explored in this work to determine their influence on phosphorus uptake and dissolution. Experiments were also run in which the lime was slaked before being added to the green liquor to separate reactions with phosphate during slaking and reactions that occur during causticizing. Both reburnt lime and technical grade CaO were used. The experiment results indicate that phosphorus primarily reacts with slaked lime (Ca(OH)2), and that the final concentration of phosphate in the white liquor at the end of slaking and causticizing is nearly independent of the initial concentration of phosphorus and only mildly dependent on the carbonate concentration in the green liquor. There do appear to be differences in the rate at which phosphate reacts with reburnt lime and technical grade CaO, though the reason for this was not determined.

Effects of agitator blade scaling on mixing in dissolving tanks, TAPPI Journal April 2022

ABSTRACT: Hard calcium carbonate scale often forms on the agitators in smelt dissolving tanks. The effects of this scale on mixing are not well understood. While mixing in tanks has often been modeled in the literature, there have been no studies involving agitator scaling. To better understand the impact of agitator scaling on hydrodynamics and tank concentrations, a steady state, three-dimensional (3D) model has been developed for a smelt dissolving tank at a kraft pulp mill. In this work, four cases are compared: an agitator with no scaling, mild scaling, moderate scaling, and extreme scaling. The extreme scaling case is representative of scale buildup on a dissolving tank agitator that was significant enough that the agitator had to be stopped and cleaned. The reduction in the agitator fluid jet velocity is relatively small for the mild and moderate scaling cases, but it becomes more significant for the extreme scaling case, for which the results indicate that the mixing of the smelt with the weak wash is likely poor and that there would thus be a risk of smelt pooling.

Understanding the risks and rewards of using 50% vs. 10% strength peroxide in pulp bleach plants,TAPPI Journal December 2024

Hart | TAPPI J. 17(11): 601(2018) - ABSTRACT: The use of 50% concentration and 10% concentration hydrogen peroxide were evaluated for chemical and mechanical pulp bleach plants at storage and at point of use. Several dangerous occurrences have been documented when the supply of 50% peroxide going into the pulping process was not stopped during a process failure. Startup conditions and leaking block valves during maintenance outages have also contributed to explosions. Although hazardous events have occurred, 50% peroxide can be stored safely with proper precautions and engineering controls.  For point of use in a chemical bleach plant, it is recommended to dilute the peroxide to 10% prior to application, because risk does not outweigh the benefit. For point of use in a mechanical bleach plant, it is recommended to use 50% peroxide going into a bleach liquor mixing system that includes the other chemicals used to maintain the brightening reaction rate. When 50% peroxide is used, it is critical that proper engineering controls are used to mitigate any risks.

Factors affecting deposit formation in foul condensate stripping systems, TAPPI Journal June 2024

ABSTRACT: In kraft pulp mills, foul condensates are often steam-stripped to produce clean condensate for use as process water. The formation of organic deposits in the stripped condensate is a common problem. A systematic study was conducted to examine the deposit composition and the most likely operating parameters responsible for stripped condensate contamination experienced at a kraft mill in Brazil. Daily averaged data of 170 operating parameters over a 15-month period were analyzed by means of multivariate discriminant analysis and random forest classification analysis. The results showed that the deposit formation is related to high temperature, pressure, and dry solids operations in various evaporator effects. These conditions, combined with the poor demisting efficiency in these effects, may have increased black liquor carryover mist in the vapor. Deposit formation also appeared to be related to increased throughput of the foul condensate stripping system and increased pressure in the stripper. Results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GCMS) analyses show that the deposit consists of mostly organic matter that likely originated from wood extractives and lignin.
